The concluding game at Emirates Stadium this season turned out to be conclusive for the Premiership title race.

This game took time to get going but it built to a wonderful crescendo. Two minutes before the break Khalid Boulahrouz fouled Julio Baptista as he went clear in the area. Gilberto scored from the spot and the Dutch defender was dismissed. Arsenal seemed set to kick-on in the second half but a late rally by Chelsea saw Michael Essien steer home a header at the near post.

Both sides could have won it in a quite incredible final 15 minutes. At the full-time whistle Jose Mourinho went the visiting fans and indicated they should hold their heads high despite losing their title.

Wenger’s young side can do exactly the same. Their home and away fixtures against the other top four sides have brought three wins, two draws and just one defeat.

We can only hope Emirates Stadium will see equal excitement next term - with perhaps a little more consistency.

For once the Arsenal supporters were as concerned about the away side as their own. Ashley Cole was absent and therefore did not make his first return the club who produced him. Given that the left back had been carrying an ankle injury perhaps it was more of a surprise to see Didier Drogba left out the 16.

Wenger made just one change from the side that had beaten the Premiership other West London side the previous week. Denilson replaced Alex Hleb in midfield.

Manchester United’s derby victory made this a must-win for Mourinho’s men and, in his pre-match press conference, Wenger had suggested this would be a yardstick against which to measure side.

Expectation was sky high however the start of the game of was one of those Premiership paradoxes. There was plenty of industry on the pitch and bluster from the terraces. However, in truth, there was little going on. The only chance either side could muster in the first half-hour was an angled drive from Wayne Bridge which was smothered before he could get the ball away.

Apart from that it was a match of endeavour without endangering the goal. In the 29th minute, Adebayor nearly went clear after Boulahrouz slipped just outside his own area however Petr Cech mopped up. Joe Cole then scuffed a sorry effort wide before trickling a dangerous ball across Arsenal’s six-yard area.

Nine minutes before the break Denilson nudged a pass into the path of Adebayor and the Togolese striker made Cech pull off the first genuine save of the match.

In the 43rd minute the game-changing moment arrived. Baptista latched on to a long punt forward and got the wrong side of Boulahrouz. The Dutchman clipped the Brazilian as he pulled back his foot to shoot. It was a clear penalty and sending off. Gilberto dispatched the spot kick and referee Alan Wiley despatched Boulahrouz to the stands.

It was a rare, rare goal because it would have been cheered in both the red half of North London and the red half of Manchester.

Chelsea knew they now had 45 minutes to save their season. They nearly made a tough job nearly impossible when, three minutes into the second half, Denilson’s free-kick was nodded on to Adebayor at the far post. He teed the ball up then cracked a right-foot effort across the face of goal and just beyond the far post.

The visitors simply had to mount a response. Frank Lampard’s free-kick over the bar suggested they were starting to stir. Their cause was aided when Denilson was stretchered off just before the hour following a tackle from Paulo Ferreira and Hleb came on.

However it was Arsenal who took the initiative. The home side started to fully exploit the freedom afforded to them around the Chelsea area. Hleb and Fabregas both saw shots blocked then Gallas, unmarked and six yards out, nodded over from a corner.

It seemed like the visitors were down to nine men such was the space and possession the home side were enjoying. However, once again, Arsenal would rue the chances they had spurned.

In the 70th minute Gilberto nodded a Chelsea corner to Wright-Phillips on the right flank. He darted to the byline and fired over a cross to near post. Essien ghosted in to divert a header into the far corner.

The pendulum had swung. Suddenly the visitors seemed not only back to the full compliment but were controlling the game. Cole finished off a fine move by slamming a shot high into the Arsenal net. However his celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

As the seconds ticked away, Chelsea desperately sought a winner. Lehmann saved well from a Lampard pot-shot but just as the 90 minutes were up Hleb saw a shot batted aside by Cech.

Play was now stretched and Chelsea spread up the other end straight away with Kalou forcing a fine tip over from Lehmann.

However Arsenal might have stolen the three points with the final kick of the game when Eboue rifled a shot against the bar from the right hand channel.

So....that was the match..watched every second even though i should have been revising for exams that start TOMMOROW!!

Wenger: 'We had the right focus to win the game'
Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea
Barclays Premiership
Emirates Stadium
Sun, May 6, 2007, 4pm

[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]On a slow start...[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]

"I feel we had the right focus to win the game, we wanted to win the game. We had a bit of a hesitant start, they started more comfortably on the pitch. We were well organised, in the last fifteen - twenty minutes in the first half we took over and you could feel that we were starting to be dangerous and more comfortable to keep the ball."

[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]On Boulahrouz's red card...[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]

"The sending off changed the game, for the bad, not for the good as I would've liked my team to be tested for ninety minutes, eleven against eleven."

[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]On United winning the Premiership...[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]

"You can only say today that Man United deserve the title and congratulations to them. You could see that yesterday again, they have individual players as well who can make a difference and I believe that they were the most consistent this year, and there were a few turning points where they did not show any weakness."

[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]On Arsenal's title challenge...[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]

"It is a big frustration because we lost only one game against the top four teams, it is frustrating and encouraging. Frankly, when you look at our squad, when everyone is back, nothing is lacking. But as well you have to consider we are twenty points behind Man United. I personally believe that we payed - our bad start to the season - was down to the fact that we moved stadium, that any team will drop points when they move stadium."

[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]On Baptista and Reyes...[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]

"I have to sit down with Madrid. Certainly this week. My personal view is that it depends what they want to do with Reyes, then we will make a decision."

[size=4][using large font size is not allowed]On challenging for the title next season...[size="4"][using large font size is not allowed]
"The problem for us is to win at Sheffield United and Man City, where we lost last year. I'm confident that we have matured well and progressed well and we can achieve that."

Ambitious Fabregas urges team to 'go for it' next season
Portsmouth v Arsenal
Barclays Premiership
Fratton Park
Sun, May 13, 2007, 3pm

By Richard Clarke

Cesc Fabregas has urged his team-mates to play with more aggression next season and simply “go for it” in the title race.

Arsenal’s record against this term's other top four sides is a source of pride for the 19-year-old Spaniard however he believes their losses to some of the lower-placed teams are not acceptable. It has meant Arsène Wenger’s side, although safe in the Champions League places, have never really mounted a sustained challenge for top spot.

“It was a big gap this year,” said Fabregas, “and last season also. But remember last season we were in the final of the Champions League. Let's see if we can do it next season.

“I am sure we can - that is the mentality here to win things and we will go for it.

“I think we should be proud of our record this season [playing the top sides]. You win the title against the big teams but if you do not win against the other sides you will not win it. Arsenal cannot accept that.

“If you are ambitious and really want to win the title, you have to play with more aggressiveness and do your job properly. We have to really go for it.”

Fabregas is expected to be named in the Arsenal squad for the season-closing game at Portsmouth on Sunday. Wenger’s side are currently fourth but can rise a place if they achieve a better result than Liverpool, who entertain relegated Charlton. It will be no limp end-of-season affair for Fabregas.

“For me there is a big difference between third and fourth,” he concluded. “We are playing for honour, so we have to go for third place.”

[size=7][using large font size is not allowed]Robin says[size="7"][using large font size is not allowed]

Robin van Persie had plenty of time to reflect on life with Arsenal during his enforced injury lay-off - and the Dutch forward is as determined as ever to guide the Gunners back to the glory trail again next season.

Arsenal had to make do without their top-scorer since the end of January when he suffered a fractured metatarsal as he netted against Manchester United at Emirates Stadium.

Van Persie, whose tally of 13 has yet to be beaten by any of his team-mates, has undergone an extensive course of rehabilitation, and had to take a complete break from the hectic routine of a professional footballer.

After spending some time in his native Holland, the 23-year-old has recently stepped up his fitness work and will return to pre-season training a couple of weeks earlier than the rest of the squad.

Van Persie, who could have been rushed back into action if needed by Arsene Wenger, feels such a period away from the game will see him return refreshed for the battles ahead next season.

"For the first two weeks all I could do was sit at home. That moment was very hard for me," the young Dutch forward recalled.

"I was watching lots of football, but there I was, not even able to go to my own kitchen to get a drink. Everything had to be done for me.

"I had a lot of time to think about things such as how I see Arsenal, how Arsenal sees me, how I can improve. Those things you can really think about, but when you live day to day there is no time to stop and think about it.

"You are too tired and also in football it is always 'the next game, the next game, this game has gone, look at the next one' - and suddenly I did not have that for three or four months. Trust me that was very interesting."

Van Persie added: "This whole situation was a new experience for me and I really had to push myself hard in the last two weeks, I did it though and I am proud of that.

"What I really miss is the atmosphere in the stadium. I think the fans and me have got a connection and that is a great feeling.

"I want that feeling back, to celebrate a goal with the fans again. I cannot wait for that, it is my aim now.

"It is good to be back. I feel like I am at home again now I am back in London."

Van Persie revealed he could have returned to action for the closing few games of the campaign "if we really pushed it".

However, with the Gunners early exit from the Champions League and fourth place in the Premiership secure, there was no need to take any unnecessary risks on key personnel.

Van Persie has certainly developed under the expert guidance of manager Wenger following his £2.75million move from Feyenoord in 2004.

The Dutch international believes the current Arsenal squad have what it takes to become genuine title challengers again.

Van Persie told the official Arsenal matchday programme: "We have been very unlucky this season, personally I do not think it was down to our quality.

"I am sure that if we keep on playing the way that the boss thinks, the way Arsenal thinks, the way most of the players think, we will be successful.

"Maybe next year, and certainly within two years, as long as we all stay together."

Arsenal travel to Portsmouth for the final game of the season and could finish third should they better Liverpool's result on Sunday.

While much of Wenger's focus over the summer is likely to be on the appointment of a director of football following the departure of vice-chairman David Dein as well as any potential for strengthening the squad, speculation continues over the plans of American billionaire Stan Kroenke.

The US entrepreneur recently increased his stake in the Gunners' parent holdings company to 12.19%.

Chairman Peter Hill-Wood has been trying to arrange a face-to-face meeting with the American, but so far no date has been fixed.

"The ball is in his court. I am very relaxed and will meet him whenever it is convenient," said Hill-Wood.

Wenger, meanwhile, is reported to be tracking Poland's number two keeper Lukasz Fabianski as he looks to increase the competition for Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia.

Match Report
Barclays Premiership
Fratton Park
Sunday, May 13, 2007, 3pm

Portsmouth0

Arsenal0

By Richard Clarke

Arsenal have finished fourth in the Premiership once again after seeing out their season with a goalless draw at Portsmouth on Sunday.

Julio Baptista spurned the visitors’ best chance to take all three points when he saw his 40th-minute penalty superbly turned aside by David James. Portsmouth poured forward in the latter stages trying to grab the goal that might put them into Europe for the first time.

However results elsewhere did not go their way. They same thing could be said of Arsene Wenger’s side. They seemed set to finish third until Harry Kewell scored a last-minute penalty for Liverpool at Anfield.

Still, fourth place does secure Champions League football next season and it was completed without the nailbiting drama of last term.

Wenger made wholesale changes for the final game of the season. Emmanuel Adebayor failed to recover from his groin injury while Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) was already ruled out. Gilberto and Jens Lehmann were rested so Manuel Almunia was set to play. However the Spaniard suffered a knock in training so Mart Poom stepped in to make his Premiership debut for Arsenal.

In a serious switcharound, Kolo Toure moved into central midfield and Emmanuel Eboue began in front of Justin Hoyte on the right. Abou Diaby lent support to Julio Baptista.

The total experience of Arsenal’s bench - Vito Mannone, Matthew Connolly, Kieran Gibbs, Joe O’Cearuill and Mark Randall — was one Carling Cup start and three substitute appearances.

Walking into Fratton Park before kick-off you feared a repeat of last season’s cancelled fixture. Yet again, rain had drenched the South Coast for the visit of Wenger’s side. However referee Graham Poll gave the pitch the all-clear 90 minutes before kick-off and by 3pm the skies were clear and the rain had relented.

Portsmouth started the game with the urgency you would expect from a side hoping to secure a European place for the first time.

In the fifth minute, Nico Kranjcar cut the ball back from the byline and Sean Davis steered a first-time shot past the far post.

However the visitors soon stole the initiative. Gael Clichy stormed into the area and his drive deflected off Noe Pamarot and over David James. The ball seemed certain to drift inside the far post before Djimi Traore popped up and scooped the ball aside.

Soon afterward Baptista’s thumping drive ricocheted off James and bounced over the bar.

Kranjcar responded for Portsmouth then Kanu shuffled into space on the edge of the area before forcing a flying save from Poom. In between those chances, Cesc Fabregas floated over a free-kick from the left hand side and an unmarked Baptista nodded wide when he scored have scored.

The Brazilian was having one of those games where everything fell at his feet. Whether it went in was another matter. Five minutes before half time, Eboue was tripped by Linvoy Primus and Baptista was handed the responsibility from the spot. His penalty was firm and well-directed. However he was facing a keeper who had picked up multiple Player of the Season Awards before kick-off. He thrust out to superbly tip the ball over the bar.

It was a penalty that had been saved more than it had been missed.

The 25-year-old nearly made amends within seconds of the restart but James blocked his drive, then Hleb went through and shot into the side netting. Kanu replied with a deflected shot that was well held by Poom.

As the half wore on it became obvious who had more incentive to win the game. In the 68th minute Portsmouth thought they had stolen the lead. Benjani cracked a shot at Poom who spilled the ball at the feet of Richard Hughes. His shot was saved by the Estonian by the rebound was snaffled home by Kranjcar. He wheeled away in triumph but, after consulting with his assistant, Graham Poll disallowed the goal, presumably for offside.

Kranjcar and Tresor Lua-Lua continued to pepper the Arsenal goal in frantic finale. The home crowd were desperate for a winner as news filtered round of important scores elsewhere.

It ended in disappointment for both sides but, at the same time, neither had much complain about.

Bappy mite leave :S :sl:

but the best thing bou us is that we stick together like a unit and there is hardly any dispute
we could have done much better this season but we were burdened with injuries and departures and dealings...i could go on and on and on lol
but umm....im happy because u would expect the young players 2 have had emotional breakdowns but they have matured and learnt from mistakes.
if u have a good look at statiscs yh we have ALOT of potential and its just making the right deciisions as to who goes where on de pitch.
