The Sunnah’s of Eid



1. To awaken earlier than usual

2. To brush the teeth with Miswaak

3. To have a bath (Ghusl)

4. To be well dressed in an Islamic manner

5. To be dressed in one’s best clothes (Doesn’t necessarily have to be new)

Note: Care should be taken that we do not incur debts or transgress the limits of modesty on the clothes we purchase and wear on Eid day as is seen in Muslim communities of today. Many of our brothers are seen with unsuitable haircuts and inappropriate clothing imitating the kufaar and many of sisters are seen dressed provocatively attracting unwanted attention and the gaze of strange men upon them. What would happen if we were to die in such a state? We should adopt modesty in everyday of our loves and should never imitate the kufaar in anyway. May Allah save us from this evil. Ameen

6. To use Attar (Perfume)

7. To perform Eid Salah at the Eidgah (An open ground)

8. Avoid eating before Eid Salah on the day of Eid ul Adha and to eat an odd number of dates or anything sweet on the day of Eid ul Fitr

9. To go to the place of Eid Salah early

10. To walk to the place of Eid Salah (If it is within walking distance because every step is reward)

11. To read aloud “Takbeerat” on the way to the place of prayer for Eid-ul-Adha and silently for Eid-ul-Fitr:



“Allaahu Akbar Allaahu Akbar Laa ilaaha illallaahu Wallaahu Akbar walillaahil hamd”.


12. To use different routes to and from the place of Eid Salaah

13. To frequently read the takbeers (Loudly for Eid Ul Adha and softly for Eid ul Fitr)

14. To pray the Eid-Ul-Fitr prayer later and the Eid-ul-Adha earlier.

15. To read two rak’ahs Waajib Salaatul Eidain without any Adhaan or Iqaamah

16. It is forbidden to pray Nafil prayer before or after the prayer.

17. To read the two rak’ahs Nafl prayer on reaching home.


18. During Eid Salaah, in the first rak’ah, Rasulallah would recite Surah Ala (no. 87) and Suratul Ghathia (No. 8 in the second rak’ah.


19. Reciting these Sura’s in the Eid prayer should not be regarded as obligatory for other Sura’s may also be recited.

20. When Rasulallah completed the prayer of Salaatul Eidain he would stand facing the people who were seated in their rows and deliver a khutba issuing instructions and commanding them to do good. If he intended to send an army he did so and likewise issued any special orders he wished to.

21. The Khutba was delivered after the Eid Salaah

22. During both the khutba’s of Eid Rasulallah used to recite the Takbeerat frequently

23. The khutba of both Eids are Sunnah but to listen to them is Waajib. It is totally prohibited (Haraam) to walk around, talk or even read Salaah whilst the khutba is in progress.


24. To shake hands and hug one another on happy occasions is Mubaah (permissible). The general principle of a Mubaah act is not to regard the act as compulsory as that projects a wrong image of Deen. Furthermore, people should not regard the meeting on the day of Eid as compulsory and an inseparable part of the occasion.

25. The greeting on Eid: Jabyr ibn Nufayr said: 'When the companions of Allah's Messenger met on the day of Eid, they would say to each other, 'Taqaballahu minna wa mink (May Allah accept from us and you)." [Al Mahamiliyyat; hasan isnad; see Fath ul Bari 2:446

Eid Night - The night of Prize giving

The Messenger of Allah Muhammad is reported to have said: “And then the night of Eidul fitr, the night that is called Laylatul Jaa’izah(night of prize giving), comes along. On the morning of Eid Allah sends down the Malaa’ikah(angels) to all the lands of the earth where they take their positions at access points of roads, calling out with a voice that is heard by all except man and jinn, “O Ummah of Muhammad(Salallaho alaihe wassallam), come forth from your houses towards a Lord that is noble and gracious, who grants much and pardons the major sins.” When they proceed towards the places for their Eid salaah, Allah says to the Malaa’ikah: “What indeed is the reward of that employee who had rendered his services?” The Malaa’ikah reply’ “O Lord and Master, it is only right that he should receive his reward in full for his services.” Allah then says, “I call you to witness, O My Malaa’ikah, that for their having fasted during the month of Ramadhaan, and for their having stood in prayer by night, I have granted to them as reward My pleasure and have granted them forgiveness. O My servants ask now of Me, for I swear by My honour and My greatness, that whatsoever you shall beg of me this day in this assembly of yours for the needs of the Hereafter, I shall grant you; and whatsoever you shall ask for worldly needs, I shall look at you favourably. By My honour I swear, as long as you shall obey my commands, I shall cover your faults. By My honour and by My greatness do I swear that I shall never disgrace you among the evil-doing ones and disbelievers. Depart now from here, you are forgiven. You have pleased Me, and I am pleased with you. The Malaa’ikah an seeing this great reward bestowed by Allah upon the Ummah of Muhammad (Salallaho alaihe wassallam) on the day of Eidul Fitr become greatly pleased and happy.” (Hadith-Targheeb)
The the night before Eid, is a very important night and we should at least spend part of it in the worship of Allah. Despite all the other work we have, we should not lose the blessing of this night, because this is a such a night that who so ever remains awake on this night in the worship of his Lord, Allah, his heart will not die on the day when hearts will die?”

On the day of Judgement when hearts will nearly die out of fear, this person will be free of such fear and anguish. Also, that person who remembers Allah is like a living person and the one who doesn’t is like a dead person. So to emphasise – this is a very important night that we often forget because we are too busy preparing for the next day or have already started celebrating Eid.
So let us thank Allah on the night of Eid and ask of him for forgiveness and acceptanceof our good deeds during Ramadan.

One minor point is that in the Arabic it says:

"Allaahu Akbar Allaahu Akbar Laa ilaaha illallaahu Wallaahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar walillaahil hamd”

In other words, there is is one Allahu Akbar missing your transcription. I added/wrote the part in bold.

in indonesia, mostly use 3 "Allaahu Akbar":

Well I don't think it's an issue, i.e. Indonesians saying 3x. It is just that the Arabic in brother Hamza's excellent post has one extra Allahu Akbar so the transliteration and the text don't match - which is a minor point.

Can someone clarify for me ? Brother said to put on attar (perfume) But I heard that if you put on perfume/cologne/ for example axe that you can't pray? Or that you shouldn't go to the masjid with a strong scent of something? even if its perfume/cologne/body spray

Well Axe smells pretty bad and it often makes my head hurt when other people have it on! I think that's what the person from whom you heard this thing meant. You obviously don't want to sport something that will harm others. If that's not the case, you should ask the person why does he think wearing perfume is not okay because it is Sunnah to wear perfume. It was one of the most beloved things to the Prophet (pbuh).

Alright thanks brother, I'll ask the local imam for clarification. I just heard that your prayers arn't accepted if you smell like cologne, but that attar or musk? was sunnah

Asalaamu Alaikum, i think you are referring to perfume which has alcohol in it and you cannot pray until the alcohol has diffused. It is fine to use Attar and the Prophet (Salalllahu Alaihi Wasallam) liked Attar.

Regarding not being able to go to the Masjid with a strong scent then this is referring to raw garlic because it has such a strong smell that it would put off others who are praying so we are not to eat raw garlic before going to the Masjid.
