The criteria should be based on the questions which you should ask your self.
For example lets start with simple questions:
Do I have only One Creator or Multiple Creator?
Does my Creator share His Kingdom with anyone?
Can I compare my Creator to anything or Is my Creator Unique?
These three simple questions will eliminate most of the religions.
Your soul will lean toward the answers that brings peace into the heart.

You should chose based on evidence, and that evidence is, the Quran for Islam and the Bible for Christianity.
Hope this helps..

why do I have to?
You have to choose because there's a right way and wrong way. God didn't put us on the planet without sending guidance; there is a reason he sent the prophets and the holy books; this way we do not get lost in life. He is the creator and we have to come to him on his terms not ours. He will guide you to a road map that will lead you back to him.
In the Quran ch-112 it saysI am confused as to who He is even
"Say: He is Allah, the One!
God the Eternal, the Uncaused Cause of All Being
He begets not, and neither is He begotten;
and there is nothing that could be compared with Him"

This is very good advise, but I would add some questions about what you already believe besides belief about religion. What kind of things do you love to do or care about? Would the faith you pick require you to change? How do you feel about science, as many religions, especially Christian, seem to be at war with science! Do you have a career or want one? If so, are there any barriers imposed by the the religion you join? How will the religion you choose be accepted or rejected by family and friends? Remember how apostatry is regarded in Islam!I think you should start with simple criteria and then use that to eliminate any religion that doesn't pass the criteria.
