Inshallah, I really want to start wearing an abaya. I'm a college student with no support from my parents (due to my conversion). Does anyone know of an inexpensive place to get new or used abayas?

May Allah make it easy for you sister.

And, do you know that wearing Abaya is not mandatory for Muslim women?

Sister I don't know which shops you could go to in your area but maybe your best option is to just google 'cheap abaya' and see what comes up. Buying online is sometimes cheaper. I would say if you could find an abaya for 30 dollars then that is cheap because a lot of them would be about 50 or 60 dollars

Most of the shops in my area have $60+. I'm going to be watching them for sales, but doesn't happen I've noticed that doesn't happen much.

you can simply buy a black cloth from a store or shopping mall and then from that cloth sew your own creative abaya :)

I think Muslim women who can make their own abaya at home or have it tailored with their own beautiful designs are very creative Masha-Allah.

if a Muslim woman loves Allah and His Messenger Muhammad (SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam) she also tries her best to emulate/copy the beutiful examples of his noble wives, especially in their kind and strong character and in their dressing modestly. There is a Hadith I think about how some Muslim women after praying a salah at Fajr time looked like they had black crows on their heads and how the companion (I think) who narrated the Hadith could not tell who was who from among the women... this could mean that they were wearing black cloaks, or black abayas worn on the head, which cover the shape of the shoulders.

Allah knows best.

I feel as if fabric would be nearly as expensive as buying an actual abaya. I work 55 hours a week, so don't have too much excess time to sew...if I even knew how! Haha
