I have been interested in the country of Malta for some time now and have been told that modern Arabic speakers can understand modern day Maltese. But not vice versa.
Malta was invaded by the ancient race of Phoenicians approx. 3000 years ago who apparrently spoke a form of Arabic.

Can anyone confirm this regarding the language?
