Obviously today is viernes (Friday) so I was at jumma and the Imam went over the night time salat called taraweeh. I was wondering if someone here might be able to break dis down fer me. If you are responding to this though and you are from the Middle East ( or just raised Muslim ) please explain it as you would to a child who is just starting to enter into the practicing of Islam.

:sl:
Taraweeh is a non obligatory, but preferred, prayer that is performed in the month of ramadan. It is done either in congregation behind an imam in a masjid, or at home. It starts right after isha prayer. It consists of 8 rak'at, in 4 prayers (2 rak'a each, just like fajr prayer). We usually recite a whole section from the Quran in those 8 rak'at (The Quran consists of 30 sections, and a section is roughly 20 pages from the 604-page Quran), thus we finish the Quran in 27-30 days.

Others sometimes pray 20 rak'at each day, reciting 1 page in each rak'a. Others finish the Quran 2, 3 or more times in ramadan.

The night prayer is different, it is also a non obligatory prayer that is performed in the last third of the night, after which fajr prayer is performed. Any number of raka'at can be prayed, 2 each just like fajr prayer.

If any part was not clear, feel free to ask :)

As-salamu 'alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh

A few years ago I didn't understand most of the Qur'an, yet I went to Taraweeh. There is blessing in it even if you don't understand. Of course, it is an optional prayer and the choice is yours.

I do not mean it in that context. I simply mean that personally I would be incapable of performing it. As for going to it.... that too will be difficult as I am the very definition of poor at this moment. There is not a cent in my bank account right now ( I know some people say that & mean it figuratively but I am not speaking in that format right now ). I managed to get to the masjid for jumma but I will not have funds again until monday so I must be really careful with the gas. If I run out there is no means by which to refill it, none. It saddens me that I have not been able to go to the masjid as much as I desire but that is the price I pay for being low on income. Soon that will change, insha'Allah. A lot of things seem to be happening this Ramadan where it appears that finances will not be a problem soon. Unfortunately soon will be after Ramadan but nothing can happen that Allah (swt) does not will
