If one intends to make up a day of fasting that was broken during Ramadan...and they have the intention of this the night before should they still go ahead with the fasting if they sleep past the time of fajr but not past the time of dhur? What I mean is should they still fast that day or should they make up the day another day when they are able to actually fast from sun rise to sunset

As-salamu 'alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh

I think, from what I know, that the person should fast because he intended to fast. One should not sleep past Fajr time because that would mean missing the Fajr prayer which is a big no-no. You don't know have to be awake during the fasting hours or from sunrise to sunset. For example, you could go to back to sleep after praying Fajr and wake up at Duhur. Your fast would still be valid. Let's say that overslept the time of Suhur but you woke up before Fajr time was over and you intented to fast, then you should go on with your fast.

"Let's say that overslept the time of Suhur but you woke up before Fajr time was over and you intented to fast, then you should go on with your fast."

By this slightly confused phrase, I mean you missed Suhur but woke up for the Fajr prayer. I think the fast would be valid if you missed Fajr (prayer) but had intented to fast, moreso if you intented to fast but accidentally overslept.
