    So sorry Nabilia about the loss of your cat. Death is so hard. May Allah heal you. Funny how your death brought me back here. Well Baby did not die. She is 17 now and the love of my life. I pray to Allah all the time to give her a long life. I have 8 indoor cats now. They are my doctors, my nurses and my friends. To this day we are not allowed to mention Baby's mother's name as she is still devastated by her death. I feel Baby has survived this long due to me feeding her colloidal silver.

It conjures up the warm, fuzzy feeling of being cared for and protected. How often the universal mother of us all has reminded us to "drink all your milk" so we will grow strong and healthy. The white color of milk reminds us of purity and cleanliness. It's no wonder that most of us look on milk as the perfect food. Contrary to popular belief, this picture is far from the truth. In reality, processed cow's milk is a chemical soup that is highly toxic and a negative fountain of youth for adults. To put it simply, cow's milk is not healthy for humans. It has been linked to a variety of diseases, including allergies, diarrhea, colic, and cramps in children. In adults, it is linked to heart disease, arthritis, autoimmune disease, allergies, and certain types of cancer such as leukemia and lymphoma. Most the world's population does not drink or use cow's milk. The reason is simple - cow's milk makes them sick. Cow's Milk Is Designed For Cows Milk is a maternal lactating secretion and a short-term nutrient for newborns. In the animal kingdom, a baby is weaned from milk when its body weight reaches approximately three times that at birth. All animals wean their off-spring at a fixed time peculiar to their species, except humans who continue to drink milk, if not their own mother's, then that of the mothers of other mammals. The milk of mammals is species-specific. The milk of every species is unique and tailored to the requirements of that animal. Humans, as a species, evolved due to advanced neurological development and delicate neuromuscular control. Essential fatty acid forms an integral part of the human neurological system for memory and intelligence, while protein is the basic building block of massive skeletal growth needed in a calf for survival in the wild. Cow's milk is therefore designed for calves and not for human babies. The primary type of protein in cow's milk is casein. There is four times more casein in cow's milk than human milk. It also has five to seven times the mineral content, but severely deficient in essential fatty acids when compared to human mother's milk. Human milk, on the other hand, has eight times more essential fatty acids, especially Linoleic acid. Immune System Cow's milk contains many proteins that are poorly digested and harmful to the immune system. When protein in our food is properly broken down by the digestive system into amino acids, it does no harm to the immune system. Some food proteins such as casein, however, are absorbed into the blood fully undigested, provoking an immune response. Repeated and persistent exposure to these proteins disrupts normal immune function, leading to a multitude of diseases. One of the best screening tests and the first line of treatment for allergy and immune system dysfunction is removing dairy products from the diet. This has been shown to shrink enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Reports of marked reduction in colds, flu, sinusitis, and ear infections are commonly reported after discontinuation of milk. Toxins The 20th century diet of cows is rife with pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, and traces of heavy metals, along with chemicals to enhance growth and productivity. Whatever a cow eats shows up in her udders, including grass, silage, straw, cereals, roots, tubers, legumes, oilseeds, oilcakes, and milk by-products, which contain a variety of chemical additives. This is a far cry from the grass fed free roaming cattle of the old days. Breeding methods now produce cows that generates three times more milk that the old-fashioned scrub cow. Milk is an ideal storage medium for dissolved environmental chemicals. Most environmental contaminants are of the fat-soluble type and milk has about four percent fat. The water-soluble chemicals dissolve easily in the predominantly aqueous part of milk. Therefore, we find in milk all types of chemicals, fat-soluble and water-soluble, because milk offers both environments. A lactating mammal excretes toxins through her milk. This includes pesticides, chemicals, hormones, and antibiotics. Chemicals fed to cows are transferred to milk and eventually into our body upon consumption of milk from such lactating cows. Drugs such as hormones or antibiotics given to cows show up in the milk in short order. For example, antibiotics like penicillin given to cows to treat mastitis is responsible for the failure of milk to have "starter" reaction in cheese making. About one percent of milk today is unsuitable for cheese making due to high levels of penicillin. The exposure to small levels of antibiotics in milk is also dangerous since it causes modification of "good" bacteria in the intestine leading to vitamin and mineral deficiencies and often "superinfection" - the increased tendency to contract infections. Long-term exposures to low-levels of antibiotics are extremely harmful to health since these exposures produce drug-resistant strains of bacteria. Such is the case with a class of drugs known as sulfonamides used to prevent infections in cows. Low level exposure to sulfonamides produces resistant strains of bacteria and makes this otherwise useful drug ineffective. Other environmental hazards in milk use comes from the radioactivity - from the sun and x-rays and, occasionally, from fallouts of catastrophe such as Hiroshima, Three Mile Island, and Chernobyl. The fallout is the settling of the fission products of a nuclear reaction, in the air, on the ground, or below the ground. Such radioactive material can be carried by wind for miles and the fallout may last for months or years, dispersing throughout the globe. Pasteurization Processed milk from cow is commercially pasteurized to assure safety. Pasteurization also destroys some of milk's valuable nutrition, including almost all vitamin D, half of all vitamin C, and half to three-quarters of vitamin B-complex. The essential enzymes and growth factors destroyed during pasteurization are irreplaceable, unlike vitamins A & D. For example, phosphatase enzyme in milk is necessary for the absorption of calcium. Pasteurization destroys this enzyme, rendering pasteurized milk a poor source of calcium that can be utilized by the body. Other enzymes destroyed include lactase for assimilation of lactose and galactase for the assimilation of galactose. Milk devoid of such enzymes are much more difficult to digest and acts as a stressor on our body. In essence, pasteurization of the milk drastically changes the structure of the milk proteins (denaturization) into something far less than healthy than "nature's most nearly perfect food" we have been lead to believe. Despite the disadvantages, pasteurization is perhaps the only way to assure safety of milk on a bulk-production basis. Without pasteurization, daily bacterial counts, weekly anaerobic tests, monthly bacteria cultures are needed to monitor the milk. In addition, regular blood tests have to be conducted on cows themselves every 60 days, and T.B. skin tests made every six months. It is obvious that this practice is prohibitively expensive. Milk Promotes Calcium Loss A major concern of those advised to stop drinking milk is, "What will happen to my teeth and bones?" The answer is astoundingly simple, "They will improve." The majority of the world's population takes in less than half the recommended daily calcium intake of 800 mg a day and yet they have strong bones and healthy teeth. The notion that continuous ingestion of high amount of calcium in order to maintain strong bones and prevent osteoporosis must be dispelled. Studies have repeated shown that strong bone is more a function of optimum amount of magnesium rather than calcium from a nutrient perspective. While milk provides calcium, it is ironic that milk also promotes calcium loss in the body. There are two main reasons for this: 1. Excessive proteins intake from cow's milk increase the need for minerals to neutralize the acid formed from digesting animal protein. Such minerals include calcium and magnesium. 99 percent of the body's calcium and 60 percent of the body's magnesium is stored in the bone. To neutralize the acidic environment, calcium are mobilized from the bone to the blood, resulting in a loss of calcium from the bone. In fact, calcium excretion and bone loss increase in proportion to the amount of animal protein consumed. Milk and diary products are therefore acid forming substances. Acidic byproducts that accumulate in the body is one primary cause of accelerated aging and cancer. It is best for our body to be bathed in a slightly alkaline environment. The higher the diet consist of milk, meat, and poultry, the more protein is ingested, and the more acidic the body becomes. Vegetarians, for example, need about half as much calcium as meat eaters as they lose much less calcium in their urine. In addition to reclaim of calcium from bone, animal proteins, due to the high sulfur content, alter the kidney's re-absorption of calcium, so that more calcium is excreted. Those on high protein diets such as meat and diary products lose about 100 mg of calcium a day. 2. Cow's milk also contains phosphorous. When calcium and phosphorus reach the intestine together, they compete for absorption. The more phosphorus there is, the less calcium will enter the body. Some phosphate compounds form insoluble calcium salts in the intestine. In addition, excess phosphorus triggers the release of parathyroid hormone, which sucks calcium out of bone. When combined with calcium, phosphorus also competes with and prevents calcium absorption in the intestine. Not all calcium in the food enters the body. Many components of food such as phosphates, vitamin D, fiber, proteins, and hormones alter absorption of calcium in our diet. For example, Cow's milk contains 1,200 milligram of calcium per quart; human milk contains only 300 milligrams. But the total calcium absorbed in breast-fed babies is higher than in babies fed cow's milk. The phosphates and palmitic acid in cow's milk reduce absorption of calcium. The calcium/phosphorus ratio is important for optimal use of all bone-building minerals. The ideal ratio is 2.5 to 1. Too much phosphorus will upset the balance, which could lead to progressive bone loss. The ratio in cow's milk is only 1.3 to 1. You can get an ample supply of calcium from green leafy vegetables. Supplementation with calcium is an easy and inexpensive way to assure that you get enough. About 500 mg of calcium a day is all that is needed for strong bones, provided that you take 500 mg to 1,000 mg of Magnesium. The ratio of magnesium to calcium should be one to one (1:1) or even two to one (2:1) for strong bones, according to many researchers in the forefront of anti-aging medicine. Bovine Growth Hormone The approval by the FDA to use recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST- better known as bovine growth hormone or BGH ) to increase milk production by 20-30 percent since 1994 is a cause for alarm. BGH is banned in Europe and Canada. Cows so treated have high levels of IGF-1 (the serrogate marker of growth hormone in the blood), from 2 to 10 times higher than normal cow's milk. While BGH milk contains no more IGF-1 than human breast milk, very few adults continue to drink human breast milk throughout life. Furthermore, pasteurization not only does not destroy IFG-1, but actually increases its concentration in BGH-milk. BGH's other action on the cow includes decreasing the body fat and increase its lean body mass. This bodily composition is characteristic of a young and strong cow, and the intake of BGH is designed to mimic this state of health. Unfortunately, when BGH is given to adult and mature cows, the body fat is already contaminated with a wide range of toxins from grain-fed, hormone-enhanced, and antibiotic-laced diet since these toxins are normally stored it the fat. When the fat mass decreases, these toxins are transported into the cow's milk. Once taken in orally by humans, IGF-1 from BGH enriched milk can enter the blood stream from the intestine and increase the risk of breast and prostate cancer. The widespread use of this genetically engineered product has been linked to the proliferation of breast, prostate, and colon cancer cells in humans. Selected studies have shown that men with an IGF-1 level between 300-500 mg/dl have more than four times the risk of developing prostate cancer compare to those with a level between 100 to 185 mg/dl. The risk is more pronounced in men over 60 years of age, where the risk of prostate cancer is eight times higher than control. The elevated IGF-1 levels were present several years before an actual diagnosis of prostate cancer. Cancer Studies have confirmed that milk fat is a recognized source of carcinogenesis. It is easy to understand how milk can become carcinogenic. First, the use of saturated fat in diet increases the incidence of cancer and milk fat is mainly saturated. Second, milk is an ideal carrier for chemical carcinogens. A French study (September 1986) conducted in over a thousand breast cancer patients also found that the use of butter is not a cause of breast cancer in women, and that yogurt actually reduces the incidence of cancer. Take ovarian cancer as an example. Its incidence parallel dairy eating patterns around the world. The culprit seems to be galactose, the simple sugar broken down from the milk sugar lactose. Animals fed galactose develops ovarian cancer at a much higher rate than control groups. About 10% of the U.S. population lacks the enzymes to metabolize galactose. Unfortunately, the body does not sent us a signal us of such deficiency. This is unlike lactose intolerance, in which there are clear signs of digestive upset. You can be galactose deficient and not know it. It is much more simple to just avoid dairy altogether. This include yogurt, cheese, and other fermented dairy products. The bovine leukemia virus is found in the majority of dairy cows in the United States. This virus is killed during the pasteurization process. Accidents do happen. An accidental "cross connection" between raw and pasteurized milk in a milk processing plant in the Chicago area in 1985 results in severe salmonella outbreak, killing 4 and causing over 100,000 ill. Virtually all animals expose this virus develop leukemia, including primates. Allergy Cow's milk is a leading cause of food allergy in America. Widely recognized symptoms include diarrhea, cramps, bloating, gas, iron-deficiency anemia, skin rashes, atherosclerosis, and acne. It is also linked to recurrent ear infection in children, insulin dependent diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. Milk is a mucous producer. Poorly digested bovine antigens (substances that provoke an immune reaction) like casein become allergens in allergic individuals and is a common burden on the respiratory, digestive, and immune systems. Common symptoms of allergy include diarrhea, constipation, and fatigue. It is estimated that at least 50% of all children in the United States are allergic to cow's milk in some form. Tension-fatigue syndrome is another most common symptom of milk allergy along with abdominal pains, repeated headaches, aching muscles and joints, or even bed-wetting. Children who suffer from milk allergy are often pale, have large circles under their eyes, and seem to have a "stuffed" nose all the time. In fact, this is so prevalent a cause that one of the first steps in treatment of many cases of asthma, allergies, tension-fatigue, and sinus infections is the simple trial of elimination of all diary products from the diet for 3 weeks. Confirmation of milk allergy can be easily observed If the symptoms resolved when diary products are withheld but recur when diary product is taken in again. Xanthine Oxidase A protein enzyme called xanthine oxidase found in cow's milk poses health problems. Proteins are usually broken down after digestion. Small fat globules, which encircle the xanthine oxidase, are absorbed into the body when milk is homogenized. Homogenization is a process where whole milk is mechanically whipped so hard its butterfat molecules separate from their natural clumps to float in perpetual microscopic suspension throughout the water. The flavor-bearing fat is distributed all over the water of the milk. The result from a naturally totally blah white liquid with a floating layer of rich, creamy, fatty goo, is a mildly tasty beverage with an absence of anything floating on top. The dairy industry food engineers invented this process to open a huge market for milk during the 1930s Great Depression. Many research studies have concluded clear relations with this absorbed enzyme and higher risks of heart disease. The following excerpt from the journal Atherosclerosis (1989;77:251-6) sums it up succinctly: "Homogenized cow's milk transforms healthy butterfat into microscopic spheres of fat containing xanthine oxidase (XO) which is one of the most powerful digestive enzymes there is. The spheres are small enough to pass intact right through the stomach and intestines walls without first being digested. Thus this extremely powerful protein knife, XO, floats throughout the body in the blood and lymph systems. When the XO breaks free from its fat envelope, it attacks the inner wall of whatever vessel it is in. This creates a wound. The wound triggers the arrival of patching plaster to seal off that wound. The patching plaster is cholesterol. Hardening of the arteries, heart disease, chest pain, heart attack is the result. Multiple Sclerosis Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a progressive neurological disease which produces disturbances in speech, vision, and muscle, all leading to patients becoming invalids and ultimately death. MS is found much more common in colder climates and rarely occurs near the Equator. MS is suspected of coming from milk harboring an undiscovered virus that attacks people who have vulnerable immune systems. The incidence of MS is significantly correlated with milk consumption in the U.S. and around the world, but the mechanism behind this correlation is not clearly understood. Hypotheses presented include alteration of the nervous system by milk and the presence of toxic or infectious agents in milk. MS is rare when mothers breast fed. Juvenile Diabetes Juvenile onset (Type I) diabetes results when the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas is destroyed. This type of diabetes is thought to occur in genetically susceptible individuals, when an unknown environmental factor triggers the immune system to attack the pancreas. Exposure to dairy products early in life may be an important triggering factor. While the exact mechanism is not known, it is postulated that milk protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) somehow leads to an auto-immune reaction aimed at the pancreas and ultimately to impairment of the pancreas's ability to produce insulin. According to a 1992 report in The New England Journal of Medicine, a study of 142 diabetic children all had abnormally high levels of BSA antibodies. This research suggests that a combination of genetic predisposition and exposure to cow's milk leads to juvenile diabetes. In epidemiological studies, children who did not receive cow's milk during the first three months of life had 40% fewer cases of diabetes than children who did consume milk. Animal research has provided evidence that at least two different cow's milk proteins can promote damage to the pancreas. Cholesterol The use of cow's milk for human consumption started about 5,000 years ago. Now dairy products make the single largest dietary contribution to what the World Health Organization calls the greatest epidemic of all time apart from malnutrition - heart disease. There are about 35 grams of fat in a quart of milk. About 60 percent of milk fat is in the saturated form, and only 3 percent as polyunsaturated fat. If you drink one quart of whole milk per day, you will have consumed over one-third of your daily quota of fat as recommended by the American Heart Association. The high proportion of saturated fat in cow's milk is responsible for the many deleterious effect of milk. It raises blood cholesterol, increases adherence of platelets, and causes thrombosis or blocking of arteries. Many research studies have shown that animals fed milk fat develop blocked arteries just like humans. Autopsies performed on children after accidents have revealed changes in coronary vessels believed to be precursors to atherosclerosis. Children with normal blood vessels are almost always primarily breast-fed, while children fed cow's milk or formulas based on cow's milk have diseased vessels. Interestingly, cow's milk and human milk have almost the same concentration of cholesterol (about four milligrams per ounce). However, the quantity of cholesterol absorbed in the blood has very little to do with its concentration in milk. The amino acid taurine reduces absorption of cholesterol from human milk. Taurine binds with the bile acids needed for the absorption of cholesterol. Cow's milk does not contain enough taurine to block absorption of cholesterol. As a result, adults breast-fed as infants have lower cholesterol deposits in their vessels than those who were fed cow's milk in infancy. The connection between milk consumption and heart disease was first suspected in 1967 and since then have been repeatedly confirmed by various tests. Next to soft drinks, there is nothing you can do which is more damaging to your heart and arteries than to drink cow's milk. Even cheese and butter are better than milk. Meat, the favorite scapegoat, does not even come close to damaging our heart and body as does milk. In fact, studies have shown that the chance of associating heart disease with diet are: Butter - 50 percent Meat - 58 percent Eggs - 60 percent Animal Fats - 76 percent Animal proteins - 81 percent Sugar - 84 percent Milk - 91 percent Milk is on the top of the scale, with better than 90 percent chance of increased incidence of heart disease. Kidney Stones Kidney stones are a common complaint in affluent societies. Bladder stones, on the other hand, are common in developing countries. This unusual distribution of stones is attributed to our diet. Diets rich in calcium and other minerals produce kidney stones, a mixture of calcium oxalate or phosphate. Bladder stones, ammonium acid urate, appear in nutritional deprivation when body proteins break down to release ammonia. This is how milk increase incidence of kidney stones: a. Meat increases absorption of calcium and makes urine acidic, both increasing concentration and precipitating calcium oxalate crystals in the kidneys. b. Milk sugar and proteins increase absorption of calcium from other sources. Milk also adds vitamin D, which increases incidence of kidney stones. c. Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption from diet and mobilization from the bones. The overall effect is increased calcium in the urine. Dietary modifications can show remarkable reduction in kidney stones. Begin by adding more unrefined fiber, bran, whole wheat, brown rice, fruits, and vegetables to the diet. Avoid all refined carbohydrates and other processed foods, increase fluid intake, and reduce the use of meat. Finally, avoid the rich sources of calcium or oxalate. The high oxalate foods include: coffee, chocolate, peanuts, spinach, rhubarb, beetroot, etc. Conclusion Next to sugar, milk is the largest contribution to food-induced illness in the developed world. It is more appropriated classified as a ####tail of chemical and bacteria rather than wholesome pure food as it is promoted in the past century. Despite the proof in the medical literature, the public, as well as the health professionals, remain oblivious to the dangers of milk. Milk supporters tout its superior nutritional value. It is true that two cups of milk give us 16 grams of protein, 600 milligrams of calcium, 0.8 milligram of riboflavin, 600 IU of vitamin A, and 200 IU of vitamin D. However, milk is not an exclusive source to supply this nutrition. Equivalent nutritive value can be found in three slices of natural aged cheese or two cups of yogurt, as well as various combinations of meats and vegetables. There are, however, ways to modify milk to remove what creates its undesirable effects. According to Dr. David L. Once all of this is accomplished, milk can be drank safely, but most people would complain that the resulting crystal clear, water-like liquid does not taste as good as it is supposed to. The average adult takes in about 180 gallons of liquids per year, including 50 gallons of water, 35 gallons of coffee, 35 gallons of soft drinks, 25 gallons of milk, 22 gallons of beer, 8 gallons of juice, 7 gallons of tea, and 4 gallons of wine/liquor. Out of all these liquids, only one fits well for daily continuous consumption in large quantity with anti-aging effect - pure filtered water. All the other liquids should be used sparingly as a social drink and not as a health drink or replacement of water. Adults should reduce as much as possible dairy products, including skim milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream. There are simply much better sources of obtaining the same nutrients other than from milk. A small amount of milk or milk by-products will not harm your body. Continue this plan for as long as you wish, (although it is probably better to use it every other week and modify your regular eating habits on the week you are not on this plan.) FIRST DAY: Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want, except bananas. For those who like melon, two fruits that are lower in calories than most other fruits are watermelon and cantaloupe.   8. Salam Alekum Is Dairy Healthy: Dairy, Is It a Healthy Choice? by Karen Railey ##. CNC Author of the popular "How to" guide, How to Improve Fading Memory and Thinking Skills with Nutrition. Milk does a body good! Got milk? For most of us these are familiar slogans. Does milk really do a body good? Is it as healthy as it is presented in television commercials and magazine ads? As we will see, that depends on whether it is consumed in the form in which God provided it for us, or if it is consumed in the adulterated, denatured, toxic form that commercial dairy has become. Dairy products have been consumed for thousands of years and are mentioned in the Bible as beneficial food. Biblical people consumed it in its raw form as it has been by many cultures since. In those days, there was no refrigeration so milk was consumed fresh, made into butter, or cultured into products similar to cheese, cottage cheese, kefir, and yogurt. Milk is mentioned in the Bible in several places as a good thing: Abraham gave milk to visiting angels. Genesis 18:8 – And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree and they did eat. God used it to describe that land into which the israelites would be brought. Exodus 3:8 – “So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.†Milk is used as a symbol of abundance, enjoyment, and nourishment. Isaiah 55:1 – “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come buy wine and milk without money and without cost.†Keep in mind that these verses refer to milk in its God given natural, raw, unadulterated state. Clean raw milk from grass-fed, pastured cattle will provide all the wonderful health promoting nutrients that are also available in butter. They are contained in the cream. We looked at the myriad of health promoting nutrients in butter when we learned about “Fats and Oils.†Raw Milk and Pasteurized Milk: A Comparison Clean raw milk from grass-fed, pastured cattle is a healthful product that was used by Galen, Hippocrates, Pliny, Varro, Marcellus, and other notable physicians of that day to promote and restore the health of their patients. In the early 1900’s J.R. Crewe, MD and others at the Mayo Foundation (now the Mayo Clinic) used raw milk to affect cures for a variety of conditions and diseases. Dr. Crewe saw remarkable results when raw milk was used for treatment of tuberculosis, nervous system disorders, conditions of the heart and kidneys, hypertension, psoriasis, gastritis, chronic fatigue, obesity, and more. All conditions responded equally well to this treatment. Historically, a variety of traditional cultures have thrived on raw milk and its products. History also shows us that when people start drinking pasteurized milk, they begin to experience health problems. This has been true in the US as well. Ron Schmid, ND states: "I have prescribed raw milk from grass-fed animals to my patients for nearly fifteen years. Time and again I have seen allergies clear up and dramatically improved health. Particularly in children, middle ear infections usually disappear and do not recur on raw milk. Both children and adults unable to drink pasteurized milk without problems have thrived on raw milk. In hundreds—perhaps thousands—of my patients using raw milk, not one has ever developed a Salmonella, Campylobacter, or other raw-milk-related infection.†Dr. James F. Murphy, D.O. of Omaha, NE prescribes raw milk in the treatment of his patients and has seen remarkable results during 15 years of clinical practice. This along with a diet rich in whole foods sets his patients on the path to wellness. Nutritionist Donna Gates has been using raw butter, raw milk, raw kefir, and raw colostrum with her clients and has found no problems with raw-milk-related illnesses. She has reported excellent improvement in the health of her clients, including autistic children. Dr. Joseph Mercola, D.O., Jordan Rubin, NMD, PhD, Tom Cowan, MD, and many other health professionals recommend raw milk in general and in their treatment plans. They all testify to the benefits and health promoting qualities of raw milk as evidenced by the improved health of their patients. On a personal level, consuming fresh, clean raw milk from pastured cows along with a healthful diet has helped my health problems immensely and I have had no problems with raw-milk-related infections. Improvements in my chronic fatigue, immune dysfunction, and digestive problems have been remarkable. I have seen others improve after beginning consumption of raw milk, as well. However, this is not the milk that most are drinking at this point in time. Kurt Oster, MD, Chief of Cardiology and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Park City Hospital in Bridgeport, CT states, “Milk has been changed over the years by processing, into an unrecognizable physiochemical emulsion which bears very little resemblance to the original, natural, and nutritional milk.†Pasteurized, homogenized milk from commercially raised cattle now rates as the number one allergic food in the U.S. This product cannot even be considered as food as it is adulterated and void of nearly all the natural nutrients that are inherent to raw milk. Let’s look again at the definition of food as stated in the American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition: "Material, usually of plant or animal origin containing or consisting of essential body nutrients, as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals, that is taken in and assimilated by an organism to maintain life and growth." Pasteurized, homogenized milk is not a promoter of life and growth, but is associated with many conditions and diseases. These include: excess mucus production, allergies, anemia, skin rashes, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, digestive problems, heart disease, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, cancer, recurrent ear infections in children, behavioral problems, autism, mood swings, depression, and irritability. Pasteurized, homogenized milk qualifies as an adulterated food according to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, as amended by the FDA Modernization Act of 1997 (revised 1/20/99). This defines any food as adulterated if: (1) any valuable constituent has been in whole or in part omitted or abstracted therefrom; or (2) if any substance has been substituted wholly or in part therefore; or (3) if damage or inferiority has been concealed in any manner. Let’s compare the nutritional aspects of raw milk and pasteurized, homogenized milk and you will see how flawlessly this applies: 1. In raw milk all the enzymes that occur naturally in milk are intact. These enzymes facilitate the digestion and utilization by the body of the nutrients, proteins, sugars, and fats contained in the milk. Pasteurized milk contains less than 10% of the original enzymes causing the milk to be largely indigestible. Consuming this milk places an enormous strain on the digestive system. 2. Raw milk contains 22 amino acids, including 8 that are essential. Because they are in a whole, unaltered state, they are completely bio-available for use by our bodies. Pasteurized milk provides very limited metabolic availability of the protein complex due to the adulteration of the amino acids, which is caused by the heat used in the pasteurization process. An ample supply of each amino acid is necessary for these proteins to be used properly by the body. If even one is missing or damaged, the rest cannot function properly. 3. Raw milk contains unaltered fats that provide valuable fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids, which are all completely metabolically available. The fats and the nutrients within them are necessary for absorption of the protein and calcium in the milk. Pasteurized milk does contain some fatty acids, however, depending on temperatures used in pasteurization, they may be drastically altered. Also, due to the lack of the enzyme lipase, which is necessary for the digestion of these fats, they cannot be properly metabolized. This will also impact the body’s ability to absorb or utilize other nutrients. The homogenization process also alters the fats, making them indigestible and virtually unusable by the body. There is evidence that this practice produces substances, in the milk that cause damage to heart and arterial membranes. 4. When consuming raw milk, the lactose is absorbed slowly into the bloodstream. Tests indicate that once pasteurized, the carbohydrates in the milk are less bio-available. Pasteurized milk has been associated with blood sugar imbalances. 5. Raw milk contains all of its innate fat and water-soluble vitamins and they are metabolically available to our bodies for health and growth. Heating at high temperatures for pasteurization results in the loss and/or adulteration of vitamins A, D, and E. Up to 60% of these fat-soluble vitamins are lost. Vitamin C loss is upwards of 50%. Vitamins B6 and B12 are completely destroyed and destruction of other water-soluble vitamins ranges from 38% to 80%. Synthetic vitamin D is added to most commercial pasteurized milk, further unbalancing the nutrient profile. The synthetic form of this vitamin promotes the calcification of soft tissues and softening of hard tissues such as bone. 6. All minerals are 100% available in raw milk and have a synergistic effect in the body. These include calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and sulfur, as well as essential trace minerals. The heat used in pasteurization decreases calcium availability by 50% or more and other minerals are adulterated as well. Due to this adulteration and the loss of enzymes, the minerals that are left cannot be effectively metabolized. 7. Raw milk contains beneficial bacteria, which is advantageous for the digestive tract and the immune system. The beneficial bacteria will inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the milk itself. Recent research has proven that pathogenic bacteria placed in raw milk could not thrive. Raw milk will sour and is still usable in that state. Pasteurized milk contains no beneficial bacteria as the pasteurization process kills all of it. If this milk is contaminated, pathogens will proliferate. After pasteurization, milk doesn’t sour naturally, but will become rancid and rot. 8. Raw milk contains a cortisone-like factor in the cream, which aids in combating allergies. Pasteurized milk has lost this constituent due to the heat used in pasteurization. (Thomas Cowan, MD, Michigan State Medical School) Ultra-pasteurization, a process during which milk is held at above boiling temperatures (285?), is now becoming a common practice and the affect of this on the milk is even more devastating than pasteurization. UP milk is so dead that yogurt cannot even be made from it! UP milk will not contain even the insignificant nutrition found in regular pasteurized milk and will be much more difficult for our bodies to deal with. Other Problems with Commercial/Pasteurized Milk There are a number of other serious concerns with commercial milk: Powdered skim milk is added to pasteurized 1% and 2% milk. It is high in nitrates, a potent carcinogen and is a source of oxidized cholesterol, which promotes heart disease. Powdered skim milk also contains altered neurotoxic proteins, which can affect the brain and nervous system. Vegetable oils that have been associated with diseases such as arteriosclerosis, heart disease, and multiple sclerosis are now being added to commercial, pasteurized milk products. Remember the beef cattle raised commercially and those raised as pastured animals? Commercially raised milk cattle suffer a similar fate as their beef counterparts. They spend their whole lives inside, on concrete, living in a stall that is 5 feet by 6 feet in size. They are fed grains tainted with pesticides and other unsavory items that they were not created to consume. Consequently, these are sick animals requiring many drugs to keep them alive and given growth hormones to enhance their milk production. A commercial milk cow raised in confinement will often live and average of less than 4 years. A cow raised on pasture can live easily for 12-15 years. We know these medications and growth hormones adversely effect the cattle and that they are found in the milk that many of us drink. What effects do they have on us? Penicillin G is widely used and is the most allergenic drug known. It and its derivatives are relatively resistant to heat and have been found in pasteurized milk products. Sulfonamides are used to treat infections in milk cows. These remain active even after prolonged heating. Some of these are believed to be carcinogenic and one, sulfamethazine, was banned because of its inherent carcinogenicity. These have been found in pasteurized dairy in amounts eight times higher than the maximum allowable levels. Two other drugs given to confinement dairy cattle, chloramphenicol and ivermectin (used for parasites) have been associated with aplastic anemia, an irreversible and potentially fatal bone marrow disease, as well as various neurological disorders. The long-term use of antibiotics and our subsequent exposure to them on many fronts has resulted in the development of new antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The pasteurized milk that caused the Midwest Salmonella outbreak in the 1980’s contained a rare strain of Salmonella that was resistant to fourteen different antibiotics, including eight that are commonly found in commercial milk. What effects does the synthetic rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) have? For the cattle it causes abnormally high milk production, which promotes mastitis in the cattle and leads to high levels of white blood cells, otherwise known as pus, in their milk. Some of these animals have great difficulty moving or walking due to the great size of their engorged udders. As a result of the commercial practice of administering rBGH to the cattle, milk contains excesses of IGF1 (insulin-like growth factor), which is associated with cancer, particularly cancers of the breast, prostate, and gastrointestinal tract. IGF1 not only promotes cancer, but also intensifies progression and invasiveness of existing cancer. Bovine growth hormone also reduces the body fat of cattle. This is unfortunate for us because the contaminants that typically stores in the body fat, carcinogens, pesticides, dioxin, and antibiotics are then transported in greater quantities into the cow’s milk. The practice of administering rBGH to cattle has been banned in Canada based on nine years of studies involving the hormones’ negative affects on animal and human safety. For the same reasons, the use of the hormone is also banned in England, Australia, France, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and New Zealand. This practice is FDA approved, so is allowed in the US and there are no labeling requirements in place for milk from cattle that have been given rBGH. You won’t know if you are drinking milk containing this hormone or not if you choose to consume commercial milk. Because of the poor conditions commercial milk cattle live in, their poor diet, and the overload of drugs they are given, they tend to develop Johnes’ disease, which has been linked to the development of Crohn’s disease in humans. Crohn’s disease is a serious condition involving inflammation, swelling, and ulceration of the intestinal tract. Johnes’ pathogens do survive the pasteurization process and are found in the milk of infected cattle. There are further issues with milk. We again have a case where organic is not enough. To raise cattle and provide organic grains, soy, and cotton seed meal still provides a poor product. As we learned earlier, cows were created to eat primarily grass and greens to be healthy and provide healthy meat. The same goes for the milk. This brings us to another area of great concern. When cattle are fed grains, particularly corn, that are moldy the milk will contain dangerous aflatoxins. Grain feeds often do become moldy and the most recent evidence indicates that pasteurization, sterilization, fermentation, freezing, concentrating, or drying, will not affect the toxicity or carcinogenicity of aflatoxins. There is a great deal of uneasiness surrounding human exposure to these toxic molds and it is based on well-documented animal feeding trials. Long term exposure to aflatoxins in feed repeatedly leads to liver cancer, liver lesions, and kidney damage. Another consideration: Even if organic milk is from grass-fed, pastured cows, then pasteurized or ultra-pasteurized, it will not be a healthful product as revealed by the comparisons above. Considering the issue of aflatoxins, the residues of antibiotics, growth hormones, and pesticides, the adulteration of milk through pasteurization and homogenization, and other issues, pasteurized milk, commercial or even organic, is something better left alone and not consumed. This can’t be milk the way God gave it to us or the way he intended for us to consume it. This becomes obvious when we grasp the fact that it will harm the temples, which he has entrusted us with. Is Raw Milk Safe? This may still be a question in your mind and there is much controversy surrounding raw milk and its safety. Many do not have the full story so parrot warnings concerning it, which have no biblical, historical, or true scientific basis. Many people are concerned about drinking raw milk because of the negative ideas that have been proliferated by the FDA, Milk Advisory Board, and so on. Remember the pastured cattle that are free to roam in the sunshine, eat grass, and are happy, healthy, and unstressed? This is the kind of animal good raw milk will come from. It is clear that healthy cows, proper farm hygiene, grass-based feed, and non-toxic farming practices provide good quality, safe raw milk. Good, clean raw milk is a God-given, healthful, and healing food for us. In the days when our university scientists did real research, the health of children fed raw milk was compared with the health of children who were given pasteurized milk. The results might surprise you. Children fed raw milk were proven to have greater resistance to TB, scurvy, flu, diphtheria, pneumonia, asthma, skin problems caused by allergies and tooth decay. Their growth and calcium absorption was also superior. Mark McAffee of California owns Organic Pastures, which is a raw milk dairy. People have been drinking his raw milk for years and he has sold many thousands of gallons over these years, with no ill effects reported. Mark went so far as to take a sample of his raw milk and a sample of commercial pasteurized milk to an independent lab in Fresno, CA and request that the disease pathogens Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli be added to both samples. It was then to be determined if the pathogens would grow in either sample. The results tell the story loud and clear. The raw milk would not support the growth of the pathogens and they all died off. Raw milk has constituents, including enzymes that guard against the growth of disease organisms. It was found that the disease pathogens proliferated in the pasteurized milk and it indeed became a very dangerous and unhealthful thing to drink. California statistics concerning outbreaks of food borne illness and milk clearly show that there have been no outbreaks of disease associated with raw milk. Ironically, pasteurized milk and pasteurized milk products or other contaminated foods have caused the outbreaks of Listeria, Salmonella, Campylobacter, and E. coli in that state. There have been quite a number of occasions in various states where pasteurized milk was responsible for outbreaks of milk-born illness. One that comes to mind is the Salmonella outbreak that took place in the Midwest in 1985. 200,000 people became ill and 18 deaths were reported. In states where raw milk was proven responsible for illness, which has been rare, the people providing the milk were not using appropriate feed, proper procedures, or practicing the required cleanliness, which made the milk unsafe. Considering this, milk from undesirable sources or milk intended for commercial sale and pasteurization should never be consumed raw. These are poor products even in the raw state, but this should not be the basis to include all raw milk in an unsafe category and that is what has been done by those opposing its’ consumption. There is much more that could be said in comparing the two, but I think this will give you and idea of the vast difference and makes it obvious that pasteurized milk is not a nutritious food and fits very well into the FDA’s definition of an adulterated food. God gave us milk in a superior, whole, health-promoting form that is easily metabolized by our bodies. We should eat it as close to that form as possible. Whenever man intervenes and tries to improve upon and oppose what God has made, he fails miserably. The practice of pasteurizing and homogenizing milk from cattle fed and raised in a manner contrary to their God-given physiology and nature is but one example of this. The Bible, history and real science supports these conclusions. It is not always easy to find raw milk and if you determine this is the case for you, it would be better that you consume no milk at all than to consume commercial milk or even organic, pasteurized milk. Kefir & Yogurt Kefir means “feel good†in Turkish. Kefir is an ancient food that is made by culturing milk of various kinds including cow, goat, sheep, coconut, or rice. Kefir has a refreshing, slightly sour effervescent quality and is easily digested. Even those with dairy sensitivities can usually drink it because the kefir grains, which are used in the fermentation process, consume the lactose. Kefir contains many beneficial probiotic bacteria and yeast, vitamins, minerals, and complete proteins, and provides many excellent health benefits. The amino acids (proteins) in kefir are partially digested so are very easily assimilated by the body. Kefir is a balanced and nourishing food that provides benefits for people with any type of a condition. It contributes to proper immune system function and has been successfully used in helping those with AIDS, chronic fatigue syndrome, herpes, candida-related imbalances, and cancer. With regular use kefir balances the digestive system and can assist in relieving all intestinal disorders, promotes regularity, and reduces flatulence. Having a tranquilizing effect on the nervous system it is of great benefit for those suffering from sleeping disorders, depression, autism, and ADHD. Kefir is rich in B vitamins so will help to regulate the kidneys, boost energy, relieve skin disorders, and promote longevity. Because kefir has such a nourishing and balancing effect on the whole body, it can help to eliminate undesirable food cravings. Yogurt is also a cultured milk product and it is healthful, but does not have as profound effect on health and well being as kefir does. The bacteria used in making yogurt are different and will provide food for the friendly bacteria in our digestive system, but kefir can actually colonize our digestive tract with probiotics. Kefir is easier to digest because its curd size is smaller than that of yogurt. Kefir has more nutritive value and will actually assist in the digestion of foods that are consumed. The best kefir or yogurt will be made using good, clean raw milk. Cheese Cheeses that are produced from raw milk, containing all of its inherent enzymes, will be more easily digested than those made from pasteurized milk. They will also contain more bio-available nutrients just as raw milk does. Not all cheese that states “raw†on the label is truly raw. Though making cheese does require some heating, it can be done at very low temperatures that will preserve the nutritional integrity of the product. Some companies heat the milk for their cheese products to just below the pasteurization temperature, which is very destructive to the milk. They are then allowed, legally, to present the cheese as “raw†because the milk was never brought all the way up to the pasteurization temperature. This is not, in reality, raw cheese. European cheeses are raw if the label says “milk†or “fresh milk†Emulsifiers, extenders, phosphates, and hydrogenated oils are added to processed cheeses, so these should be completely avoided. Fresh Whey Whey is a by-product of cheese making that was used as a therapeutic beverage for human nutrition in ancient Greece. Hippocrates prescribed fresh whey for many ailments and during the Middle Ages it was recommended by many doctors for a variety of diseases. As late as the 1940’s whey was used in Central Europe for dyspepsia, uremia, arthritis, gout, liver disease, anemia and tuberculosis. Nixtamalization: Nutritional Benefits by KimiHarris on March 19, 2009 ng_corn2 Yesterday, we looked at the history of nixtamalization and what a difference it can make in the health of those who use it, particularly for those who depend on corn as a staple. Today, I wanted to look a a little more of what happens nutritionally when you nixtamalize corn. It’s exciting to read about! Nixtamalization Releases B3 As discussed yesterday, vitamin B3 is necessary to prevent pellagra, which has many uncomfortable and even devastating symptoms. Health officials couldn’t figure out for a long time why poor Americans who depended on corn would develop this, while across the border, Hispanics wouldn’t. We now know that it was because their corn was nixtamalized which released vitamin B3. This simple practice prevented pellagra. I think that the reason that Italians who use corn a lot in the form of polenta haven’t had as many issues with pellagra (that I know of is) because they include many other nutrient dense foods that would help make up any deficiencies in their corn preparation. Nixtamalization Significantly Increases Calcium and Protein Quality The process also increases calcium, which is so important to our health, especially for those without access to dairy. It also increases the protein availability of the corn. You can imagine what this could mean for someone who’s diet is high in corn, but also think of the benefit it would have for us all! Nixtamalization Reduces Phytic Acid The process of nixtamalization also significantly reduces phytic acid. Since phytic acid blocks your absorption of zinc, calcium and other important minerals, it’s important for this process to take place. If you soak in lime, and then, like you see in my soft polenta recipe, soak with an acidic addition, you will reduce the phytic acid a lot. By the way, researchers consider this so important, they are working on developing low-phytic acid corn. Nixtamalization Reduces Toxins We have high quality corn here in the US, but not everyone is so lucky. There is a toxin called “mycotoxin “ that is present in a lot of corn around the world. They found that through the nixtamalization process, it was significantly reduced, even up to 90 percent! Conclusion This traditional practice really has a huge impact in the nutritional status of the humble corn. Through it, we can take a very frugal food, and make it nutritionally superior. And like I said in my soft polenta post, it tastes great when prepared this way! It’s no sacrifice to eat it. The only difference I found in how Nourishing Traditions has you prepare it and my research is that it was always rinsed of the lime before using it in a recipe. This is important if you want to reduce the mycotoxin content of corn (though that’s hardly usually an issue in the US). You may have heard that multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease or “a disease where the body attacks itself” – and in this case the nervous system is attacked. Molecular mimicry is a natural response of the immune system against foreign proteins misdirected to our own tissues. In this case, cow-milk proteins enter the bloodstream through the intestinal wall. Antibodies are made against this foreign substance. Soy Consumption and Thyroid Problems You might be aware that thyroid problems are pandemic in the U.S., especially in women. Well, one of the major reasons for this is because of the isoflavones in soy that is being widely consumed. Soy isoflavones can damage thyroid function, and for this reason alone should be avoided. The Dangers of Soy Infant Formula This is perhaps the most tragic use of soy as a food. Many well intentioned parents put their infants on soy formula, either because they believe it is "healthier" or because they are allergic to traditional infant formula. Either way, it‘s a prescription for disaster. Soy formula causes harm to your baby in two primary ways. First, most soy formula has 80 times the amount of manganese as breast milk and can directly cause brain dysfunction. Additionally, there is the hormonal equivalent of 4-5 birth control pills in a daily dose of soy formula, which can cause significantly premature puberty and other sexual abnormalities, and an increased risk of cancer.     Salam Alekum Natural herbal treatments First, some basics of making herbal formulas: Herbal formulas are a great way of addressing the many different aspects of a condition with one preparation. For example, a good formula for heart disease would probably include an herb to strengthen and protect the heart, one to nourish the tissues, one to thin the blood and increase circulation, one to regulate the heartbeat, and one to lower cholesterol and clean out the arteries (the elimination organs should also be cleansed). Formulas are also good to use because people are all different and while one might respond best to one herb, another might get better results with a different herb. I find that one of the herbs that relaxes me the best is chamomile; it puts me right to sleep, and valerian root just calms me down. My mother is the opposite - valerian puts her to sleep while chamomile is mildly relaxing/calming for her. By combining 2-3 (or even more) herbs that have the same general effect, or work on the same part of the body, you will have a preparation that will supply the needs of a much greater number of people. One person might respond best to black pepper, another to ginger, and yet another to fennel, but if you combine the three, you'll have a preparation that will give them all marvelous results. These formulas are a great asset and healing tool, but they are not the only tools in your healing tool box; they are not an entire program, and you must address the root cause of a problem for healing to be complete and permanent. This course makes a great beginning to your healing journey, but please don't think that this is all you need to get well. Lifestyle changes and other natural treatments are also in order. Also, these formulas were designed so that you can make them entirely from the herbs in this course and while you will certainly see results when they are used properly, there are many other herbs that I normally use in such formulas to make them even more effective, that are not included here because I wanted to make these formulas easy and affordable for everyone to make and use (not everyone has access to or can afford Gymnema sylvestre or wild American Ginseng for making their formulas). Don't be afraid of designing your own formulas either, just research and learn about the properties of different herbs and put together a combination of herbs that address different aspects of a particular problem. You don't need a degree and you won't hurt yourself, just listen to your body and use your common sense, and you'll come up with a wonderful formula. And if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email them to me. Parts - "Part" just means an equal measurement. It varies according to how much of the formula you want to end up with. So if you have a formula that calls for 3 parts of one herb and 1 part of another, and you want to end up with 4 ounces of the formula, then each part would be one ounce. In other words, you would use 3 ounces of the one herb and 1 ounce of the other. Also, it is more accurate to measure parts by weight than by volume, in other words, use a food scale instead of a measuring cup if you can. If you can't get one, just estimate and don't worry about it, but if you are going to be making large amounts of these formulas, you will find a scale to be of great help. Once you have measured out your herbs, you can mix them together and then either powder them, tincture them, or do whatever kind of preparation you want to. Some (rather inexperienced) individuals say that people shouldn't take multiple herbs at the same time because they are "risking side-effects from unnecessary medications." This simply is not true. These people are making the mistake of thinking that herbs operate in the same way that drugs do. They do not. Drugs have harmful side-effects because they are toxic foreign substances that interfere with the body's normal way of functioning in order to control/suppress a symptom of an illness. Herbs, on the other hand, are entirely natural substances (foods) that were designed specifically for our body by our all-wise Creator and they work with the body, encouraging and supporting its natural processes and supplying it with what it needs to correct the cause of illness and heal itself. This is why herbs do not have the side-effects of drugs and why it often takes longer to feel results with herbs than with drugs; it takes longer to heal a problem permanently than to simply ignore it. The effects of herbs are very different from those of drugs because their mode of action (the way they work) is different. Healing herbs, when used with prudence and skill, will never have ANY harmful or damaging side- effects of any kind, regardless of whether they are taken in combination with other herbs or not. Your body has the ability to take only the parts of herbs and foods that it needs and discard the rest. It cannot do this with synthetic chemicals and drugs; they are absorbed according to how much you take, rather than how much you need. Herbs also contain many nutrients (“raw materialsâ€) to help your body build and repair itself and strengthen it so it can defend itself against disease; there is no synthetic chemical drug anywhere that does this. So don't worry about taking formulas with several herbs. Herbs are foods, and saying that herbs are harmful in combination, when they are not harmful alone, is like saying that people should not eat salads because combining cucumbers and lettuce with tomatoes might produce harmful side-effects. Give me a break! Drugs can interact harmfully with each other and sometimes with various herbs and foods, but herbs will not interact harmfully with any other herbs or with live, natural, wholesome foods. Herbs are NOT drugs, they do not operate in the same way, and they do not produce the same kind of effects/side-effects. The worst thing that can happen to you if you overdose on an herb that I (or another good herbalist) recommends, is that you would do a little vomiting. That's the worst case scenario and it's nature's way of making sure that you don't get too much of the herb at once. How awesome is that!? A medicine with a built-in protection mechanism against overdose! No drug can do that! One note on preparations: you can take these herbs in capsules, but you will get better (and faster) results from liquid extracts like teas, syrups, tinctures, glycerites, oils, and vinegars. Here are some suggested dosages: capsule: 2 caps 3 times a day tincture/glycerite/vinegar: 2 dropperfuls 3 times a day oil: apply liberally to the affected part tea: 1-2 cups 3 times a day In emergencies or extra severe situations, take 4 times the normal dose or even more if necessary. For animals, children, etc. figure the dose by putting their body weight over 150, the average adult weight. In other words, an adult of 150 pounds would get the normal dose; a child or pet that weighs 50 pounds would get 1/3 of the normal dose; an overweight person of 300 pounds would get twice the normal dose; and a horse of 1,500 pounds would get 10 times the normal dose. This gives you a good starting dose, but keep in mind that you can go up or down from there depending on what the person's needs are. Omega-3 fatty acids found in abundance in fish like mackerel and salmon appear to slow or even halt the progress of both early and late stage macular degeneration. The researchers base their findings on almost 3,000 people taking part in a trial of vitamins and supplements. The findings are published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. An estimated 500,000 people in the UK suffer from AMD, which destroys central vision. Experts have already suggested omega-3 may cut the risk of getting AMD by a third, and now this latest work suggests these fats also benefit patients who already have the disease. These findings appear to be consistent with previous research that has shown that eating omega 3 poly-unsaturated fats as part of a balanced diet may help prevent the development of age-related macular degeneration. Information from Dr. Cinque's newsletter Progression to both dry and wet forms of advanced AMD disease was 25 percent less likely among those eating a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids. People with advanced AMD who also consumed a low-glycemic diet, eating of foods that release their sugar more slowly, and who took supplemental antioxidant vitamins and minerals like vitamin C and zinc appeared to reduce their risk of disease progression by even more - by up to 50 percent. Substituting five slices of wholegrain bread for white bread every day out of a total intake of 250g of carbohydrate might cut out almost 8 percent of advanced age related macular degeneration over five years, say the authors. The researchers at Tufts University, Boston, believe omega-3 fatty acids offer protection against AMD by altering fat levels in the blood after a meal that can be damaging to the body. They suggest that eating two to three servings of fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, shellfish, and herring every week, would achieve the recommended daily intake (650mg) of omega-3, substantially cutting the risk of both early and late stage AMD. The UK's Food Standards Agency says people should eat at least two portions of fish a week including one of oily fish. But they caution that too much oily fish is bad because it can contain low levels of pollutants that can build up in the body. Most people can safely eat up to four portions a week, but girls and women who might have a baby and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should limit their intake to two portions a week. "These findings appear to be consistent with previous research that has shown that eating omega-3 poly-unsaturated fats as part of a balanced diet may help prevent the development of age-related macular degeneration, the main cause of severe sight loss in the UK. "RNIB hopes that this will further highlight why looking after your eyes should be a key motivation in maintaining a healthy lifestyle," she said. Dr. Cinque's comments: For those that do not want to take fish oil, there are all-vegetarian DHA supplements that are derived from algae, which is the original source of DHA. Algae is at the bottom of the food chain in the ocean, and fish have the ability to concentrate the DHA formed by algae. However, companies have also figured out how to concentrate the DHA from algae, and there are now algae supplements with as high as 200 mgs DHA per capsule. However, there is no EPA- the other long chain omega 3 fatty acid. I still take Nordic Naturals ProOmega which has a total of more than 600 mgs omega-3 per capsule, dervied from very small fish: sardines and anchoves. And it's actually not fishy at all, and there is no burping of fish from it either. But for those who would rather not consume fish in any form, I think it would be a very good thing for them to take an algae-derived DHA supplement- and that's true whether or not they also consume flaxseed.   14. Salam Alkekum: I am 56 years old and al humdililah have been wearing khimar for many years. As I get older, my eyes get tired. I think mainly from little sleep as I stay up in the night for salat and many other duties. I sleep after fajr salat until dohr salat. Fasting many days and such so I am wondering being I am older now is it permissible to think of removing the khimar. I am an American living in Jordan and I do have blue eyes. So many have told me that it is required for life and many have told me being I am old I should remove it. A very good friend of mine told me that khimar is a promise to Allah, and if I remove the khimar I would be same as reducing my iman. So I would appreciate any response in helping me in this dilema. Then put the vegetable water and the cooked vegetables together into the blender. Blend until liquefied. Add a teaspoon of raw unsalted butter and a large handful of parsley. Blend again until parsley is liquefied. Dosage: Drink 2 cups a day of the broth/soup *Optional add 1 clove of garlic. ***What I did was: equal parts of zucchini, celery leaves and stalks, and green beans. 2 clove of garlic, 1 cup of water, 5 basil leaves, 1/2 cup of watercress or equivalent for taste and 3 green onions. steam this for 30 minutes after the water comes to a boil. remove from the fire and with the lid still on let it set for another hour so the mixure can envelop the juices. I placed all in a food processor along with a big handful of parsely and 1 T. of ghee or clarified butter. Mix well. I then transferred it to my blender and pulsed it 4 or 5 times to get a finer mixture but still chunky. Placed all in a big jar to refrigerater and took enough out for a small bowl and added 1/3 cup of water, salt and pepper. Heat to serve. It was really delicious.     Many times you are right. I have found it a general policy not to get involved with these wars but this man happens to know I am a cat lover. It was an attack against me and my religion. So I wanted to take advice what to do. By making a huge stink I could lose my forums and cause more damage but I have been thinking about leaving anyway so I contacted a feature writer at a place I write for and she went and made a harsh comment to the man. Then a second person told him that he was wrong and then the man attacked both of them. So I got mad and told him what he was doing was wrong and that I had requested the webmaster to kick him out of curezone. After that he made no reply. Al humdilah the webmaster agreed with me and the entire thread was removed. Needless to say the man is very angry and made a comment about freedom to speak which I ignored. I may hear on this again in the next few days but we did what we though was needed. Most of the time I ignore them but for some reason I had to speak.

  20. Precious My Cat Missing

    Well you guys were so wonderful with the dua for my baby when she got hit by a car. She is doing slightly better and alive. She still cannot run but her limping is a little better. She has to stay in the house and cannot go far so she cannot be a normal cat but I promised to take care of her. My other dear sweet cat Precious, is missing. She never in 6 years strayed from the house. The other night she wanted to go search for food and she went out the window which was Friday and has not returned. I have searched and searched for her and I am just heart broken. I know Allah is looking after her but I am just beside myself. She was my best friend. She took care of me and nursed me when I was sick and she loved me so much. I am so afraid something awful has happened to her. So if you guys could please pray for her, it would be appreciated. Sara

    I know it is Ramadan, but I feel real bad. Yesterday, I found the body of Precious glued to a street. I had to take a putty scraper and pry her loose from the pavement. Of course the worms had eated her pretty bad. I buried her yesterday.
