  1. Q-A man said that those who place their hands over their chests after rising from Ruku` (bowing) are committing an act of Bid`ah (innovation in religion). He tells people to let their hands down after rising from Ruku`. Is this view right or wrong? We hope that you could explain this to us with substantiated evidence. May Allah reward you best! A: It is authentically reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he used to place his right hand on the left one after Takbirat-ul-Ihram (saying: "Allahu Akbar [Allah is the Greatest]" upon starting Prayer) and after rising from Ruku` (bowing). Also it is authentically reported that he (peace be upon him) said: Pray as you have seen me praying. Therefore, placing the right hand on the left one upon one's chest is neither a Bid`ah nor an error. In fact, it is Sunnah (action following the teachings of the Prophet).May Allah grant us success.   2. A man concluded a marriage contract with a woman and then divorced her before consummating the marriage, is it permissible for him to marry her daughter or mother? It is permissible for someone who contracted a marriage with a woman and then divorced her before consummating the marriage to marry her daughter. However, it is not permissible to marry the mother due to just having contracted the marriage with her daughter. Allah (Exalted be He), when mentioning the women that a man is forbidden to marry, says: ...your wives’ mothers May Allah grant us success. Anyone who mocks a Muslim man or woman for adhering to the Shari‘ah (Islamic law) is a Kafir (disbeliever), whether the object of ridicule is Islamic Hijab or any other matter of Islam. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: During the Campaign of Tabuk a man said in an assembly, ‘I have never seen anyone like these Qur’an reciters of ours. They have the biggest bellies, the most lying tongues and they are the most cowardly when encountering the enemy.’ Another man said, ‘You are lying, and you are a hypocrite. I will most certainly tell the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) [what you have said].’ The news was reported to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), then Ayahs of the Qur’an were revealed (concerning this incident). ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar said, ‘I saw him (that man) hanging onto the saddle of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), stumbling over the stones while saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we were just jesting and playing.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was reciting: "Was it at Allâh (عز وجل), and His Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations) and His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) that you were mocking?" Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimûn (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals.). Thus, ridiculing the believers is equated with ridiculing Allah, His Signs and His Messenger.May Allah grant us success.   5. **Temporary marriage is invalid, because it stands for Mut`ah, which is invalid through contextual evidence as well as the consensus of Ahl-ul-Sunnah wal-Jama`ah (adherents to the Sunnah and the Muslim mainstream). It is recorded in the Two Sahih (authentic) Books of Hadith (i.e. Al-Bukhari and Muslim) on the authority of `Aly ibn Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): that on the Day of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade the contracting of the temporary marriage and [eating] the meat of the domestic donkeys. **According to another narration of the Hadith: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade marrying women temporarily on the Day of Khaybar. It is authentically narrated in the Sahih of Muslim that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, I formerly permitted you to contract temporary marriage with women, but Allah has forbidden it (now) until the Day of Resurrection. So he who has any (woman with this type of marriage contract) he should let her off, and do not take back anything you have given them (as Mahr). **Moreover, sexual intercourse under temporary marriage is considered Zina (premarital sexual intercourse); one who gets married this way, being aware of its invalidity, is liable to all rulings of Zina. Marriage is only valid when a man gets married with the intention of keeping the bond of marriage forever if the wife proves to be a good wife and he gets along with her; otherwise he may divorce her.   6. Passing between the rows does not interrupt Salah, but it should be avoided unless it is necessary. This is based on the Hadith narrated on the authority of Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father): Once I came riding a she-ass when I had just reached the age of puberty. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was offering Salah at Mina. I passed in front of part of the row.   9. Ruling on celebrating Valentine’s Day Praise be to Allaah. Firstly: Valentine’s Day is a jaahili Roman festival, which continued to be celebrated until after the Romans became Christian. This festival became connected with the saint known as Valentine who was sentenced to death on 14 February 270 CE. The kuffaar still celebrate this festival, during which immorality and evil are practised widely. For more details on this celebration, please see: Celebrating Valentine’s Day . Secondly: It is not permissible for a Muslim to celebrate any of the festivals of the kuffaar, because festivals come under the heading of shar’i issues which are to be based on the sound texts. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Festivals are part of sharee’ah, clear way and rituals of which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way” [al-Maa’idah 5:48] “For every nation We have ordained religious ceremonies which they must follow” [al-Hajj 22:67] -- such as the qiblah (direction faced in prayer), prayer and fasting. There is no difference between their participating in the festival and their participating in all other rituals. Joining in fully with the festival is joining in with kufr, and joining in with some of its minor issues is joining in with some of the branches of kufr. Indeed, festivals are one of the most unique features that distinguish various religions and among their most prominent symbols, so joining in with them is joining in with the most characteristic and prominent symbols of kufr. No doubt joining in with this may lead to complete kufr. Partially joining in, at the very least, is disobedience and sin. This was indicated by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) when he said: “Every people has its festival and this is our festival.” This is worse than joining them in wearing the zinaar (a garment that was worn only by ahl al-dhimmah) and other characteristics of theirs, for those characteristics are man-made and are not part of their religion, rather the purpose behind them is simply to distinguish between a Muslim and a kaafir. As for the festival and its rituals, this is part of the religion which is cursed along with its followers, so joining in with it is joining in with something that is a cause of incurring the wrath and punishment of Allaah. End quote from Iqtida’ al-Siraat al-Mustaqeem (1/207). He also said (may Allaah have mercy on him): It is not permissible for the Muslims to imitate them in anything that is uniquely a part of their festivals, whether it be food, clothing, bathing, lighting fires, refraining from a regular habit, doing acts of worship or anything else. It is not permissible to give a feast or to give gifts, or to sell anything that will help them to do that for that purpose, or to allow children and others to play games that are part of the festivals, or to wear one’s adornments. To conclude: the Mulsims should not do any of their rituals at the time of their festivals; rather the day of their festival should be like any other day for the Muslims. The Muslims should not do anything specific in imitation of them. End quote from Majmoo al-Fataawa (25/329). Al-Haafiz al-Dhahabi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: If the Christians have a festival, and the Jews have a festival, it is only for them, so no Muslim should join them in that, just as no Muslim should join them in their religion or their direction of prayer. End quote from Tashabbuh al-Khasees bi Ahl al-Khamees, published in Majallat al-Hikmah (4/193) The hadeeth to which Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah referred was narrated by al-Bukhaari (952) and Muslim (892) from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) who said: Abu Bakr came in and there were two young girls of the Ansaar with me who were singing about what had happened to the Ansaar on the day of Bu’aath. She said: And they were not (professional) singing girls. Abu Bakr said: “Musical instruments of the shaytaan in the house of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)?!” and that was on the day of Eid. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O Abu Bakr, every people has a festival and this is our festival.” Abu Dawood (1134) narrated that Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to Madeenah, they had two days when they would play. He said: “What are these two days?” They said: “We used to play on these days during the Jaahiliyyah.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah has given you instead of them two days that are better than them: the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr.” This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood. This indicates that festivals are among the characteristics by which nations are distinguished, and it is not permissible to celebrate the festivals of the ignorant and the mushrikeen (polytheists). The scholars have issued fatwas stating that it is haraam to celebrate Valentine’s Day. 1 –Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked: In recent times the celebration of Valentine’s Day has become widespread, especially among female students. It is a Christian festival where people dress completely in red, including clothes and shoes, and they exchange red flowers. We hope that you can explain the ruling on celebrating this festival, and what your advice is to Muslims with regard to such matters; may Allaah bless you and take care of you. He replied: Celebrating Valentine’s Day is not permissible for a number of reasons. 1- It is an innovated festival for which there is no basis in Islam. 2- It promotes love and infatuation. 3- It calls for hearts to be preoccupied with foolish matters that are contrary to the way of the righteous salaf (may Allaah be pleased with them). It is not permissible on this day to do any of the things that are characteristic of this festival, whether that has to do with food, drinks, clothing, exchanging gifts or anything else. The Muslim should be proud of his religion and should not be a weak character who follows every Tom, and Harry. I ask Allaah to protect the Muslims from all temptations, visible and invisible, and to protect us and guide us. End quote from Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (16/199) 2 – The Standing Committee was asked: Some people celebrate Valentine’s Day on the fourteenth of February every year. They exchange gifts of red roses and wear red clothes and congratulate one another. Some bakeries make red coloured sweets and draw hearts on them, and some stores advertise products that are especially for this day. What is your opinion on the following: 1- Celebrating this day 2- Buying things from the stores on this day 3- Storekeepers who are not celebrating it selling things that may be given as gifts to people who are celebrating it? They replied: The clear evidence of the Qur’aan and Sunnah – and the consensus of the early generations of this ummah – indicates that there are only two festivals in Islam: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Any other festivals that have to do with a person, a group, an event or anything else are innovated festivals, which it is not permissible for Muslims to observe, approve of or express joy on those occasions, or to help others to celebrate them in any way, because that is transgressing the sacred limits of Allaah, and whoever transgresses the sacred limits of Allaah has wronged himself. If the fabricated festival is also a festival of the kuffaar, then the sin is even greater, because this is imitating them and it is a kind of taking them as close friends, and Allaah has forbidden the believers to imitate them and take them as close friends in His Holy Book. And it is proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Valentine’s Day comes under this heading because it is an idolatrous Christian festival, so it is not permissible for a Muslim who believes in Allaah and the Last Day to observe it or approve of it or congratulate people on it. Rather he has to ignore it and avoid it, in obedience to Allaah and His Messenger, and so as to keep away from the causes that incur the wrath and punishment of Allaah. It is also haraam for the Muslim to help people to celebrate this or any other haraam festival by supplying any kind of food or drink, or buying or selling or manufacturing or giving or advertising etc., because all of that is cooperating in sin and transgression and is disobedience towards Allaah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Help you one another in Al‑Birr and At‑Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is Severe in punishment” [al-Maa’idah 5:2] The Muslim must adhere to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah in all his affairs, especially at times of fitnah when evil is widespread. He should be smart and avoid falling into the misguidance of those who have earned Allaah’s anger and who have gone astray, and the evildoers who have no fear of Allaah and who do not have any pride in being Muslims. The Muslim must turn to Allaah and seek His guidance and remain steadfast in following it, for there is no Guide except Allaah and no one can make a person steadfast but Him. And Allaah is the source of strength. May Allaah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions. End quote. 3 – Shaykh Ibn Jibreen (may Allaah preserve him) was asked: Among our young men and women it has become common to celebrate Valentine’s Day, which is named after a saint who is venerated by the Christians, who celebrate it every year on February 14, when they exchange gifts and red roses, and they wear red clothes. What is the ruling on celebrating this day and exchanging gifts? He replied: Firstly: it is not permissible to celebrate these innovated festivals, because it is an innovation for which there is no basis in Islam. It comes under the heading of the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours that is not part of it will have it rejected.” Secondly: it involves imitating the kuffaar and copying them by venerating that which they venerate and respecting their festivals and rituals, and imitating them in something that is part of their religion. In the hadeeth it says: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Thirdly: it results in evils and haraam things such as wasting time, singing, music, extravagance, unveiling, wanton display, men mixing with women, women appearing before men other than their mahrams, and other haraam things, or things that are a means that leads to immorality. That cannot be excused by the claim that this is a kind of entertainment and fun. The one who is sincere towards himself should keep away from sin and the means that lead to it. And he said: Based on this, it is not permissible to sell these gifts and roses, if it is known that the purchaser celebrates these festivals or will give these things as gifts on those days, so that the seller will not be a partner of the one who does those innovations.   10. Ruling on offering congratulations on the occasion of Eid, and shaking hands and embracing after the prayer What is the ruling on offering congratulations on the occasion of Eid? What is the ruling on shaking hands and embracing after the Eid prayer?. Praise be to Allaah. It was narrated that that Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) used to congratulate one another on the occasion of Eid by saying Taqabbal Allaahu minna wa minkum (May Allaah accept (this worship) from us and from you). It was narrated that Jubayr ibn Nufayr said: When the companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) met one another on the day of Eid, they would say to one another: “Taqabbal Allaahu minna wa mink (May Allaah accept (this worship) from us and from you).” Al-Haafiz said: Its isnaad is hasan. Imam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: There is nothing wrong with one man saying to another on the day of Eid: Taqabbal Allaahu minna wa mink (May Allaah accept (this worship) from us and from you). This was narrated by Ibn Qudaamah in al-Mughni. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah was asked in al-Fataawa al-Kubra (2/228): Does the common Eid greeting that is on people’s lips – “Eid Mubaarak” etc – have any basis in sharee’ah or not? If there is a basis for that in sharee’ah, what should we say? He replied: With regard to the greeting on the day of Eid, which people say to one another when meeting after the prayer, “Taqabbal Allaahu minna wa minkum wa ahaalahu Allaah ‘alayka (May Allaah accept (this worship) from us and from you and may you live to see another Eid)” etc, this was narrated from a number of the Sahaabah who used to do that and allow others to do so too, and from the Imams such as Imam Ahmad. But Ahmad said: I do not initiate this greeting with anyone. But if someone greets me in this manner I return his greeting. That is because returning a greeting is obligatory, but initiating this greeting is not a Sunnah that is enjoined, but neither is it forbidden. The one who does it has an example and the one who does not do it also has an example. And Allaah knows best. Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen was asked: What is the ruling on offering Eid greetings and is there a particular wording to be used? He replied: It is permissible to offer greetings and congratulations on Eid, and there is no specific greeting. Rather the greetings that people customarily use are permissible so long as no sin is involved. He also said: Some of the Sahaabah offered greetings and congratulations on the occasion of Eid. Even if we assume that they did not do that, it has now become something customary that people are used to doing, congratulating one another on the occasion of Eid and on completing the fast and qiyaam. And he was asked: what is the ruling on shaking hands, embracing and congratulating one another after the Eid prayer? He replied: There is nothing wrong with these things, because people do not do these things as acts of worship intended to draw them closer to Allaah, rather they do them because they are customary, and to honour and show respect to one another.   11. Is giving gifts on Eid an innovation (bid‘ah)? Is it permissible to give my family members some gifts on Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr, and to do that every year, or is it an innovation (bid‘ah)? Praise be to Allah. There is nothing wrong with giving gifts on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to family and relatives, because these are days of joy and happiness on which it is mustahabb to uphold ties, show kindness, and eat and drink plenty. This is not bid‘ah; rather it is something that is permissible and a good custom that is one of the symbols of Eid. Hence it is not allowed to give gifts and express joy and happiness on innovated occasions on which it is not prescribed to celebrate, such as New Year, the Mawlid (Prophet’s birthday) and the fifteenth of Sha‘baan (an-nusf min Sha‘baan), because this makes them like Eids. Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said: On this Eid people also exchange gifts, i.e., they make food and invite one another to come and eat, and they get together and celebrate. There is nothing wrong with this custom because these are days of Eid. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the house of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and found with him two young girls who were singing on the days of Eid, he rebuked them, but the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Let them be.” And he did not say it because they were young girls. Rather he said: “Let them be, for these are the days of Eid.” This indicates that Islam, with its tolerant and easy-going attitude, allows people to express joy and happiness on the days of Eid. End quote from Majmoo‘ Fataawa Ibn Uthaymeen, 16/276 And he (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is well known that there are no festivals in Islam except those which are proven in sharee‘ah, namely Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Ahda, and Friday which is the weekly “Eid”. As for the fifteenth of Sha‘baan (an-nusf min Sha‘baan), there is no proof in Islam is that it is an Eid. If it is taken as an occasion on which charity is distributed or gifts are given to neighbours, then this is taking it as an Eid. End quote from Fataawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb And he said concerning Mother’s Day: Once this is understood, it is not permissible, on the occasion mentioned in your question, which is called Mother’s Day, to introduce any of the symbols of Eid on this day, such as expressing joy and happiness, giving gifts, and so on. Because many people are distracted by eating until the time for Maghrib prayer ends, and if you ask them they tell you: There is no prayer in the presence of food. Is it permissible to quote these words as evidence, because the time for Maghrib is short? Now what should I do? Should I break my fast with some dates and then pray Maghrib and after that finish eating, or should I finish eating completely and then pray Maghrib?. Praise be to Allaah. The Sunnah is for the fasting person to hasten to break the fast as soon as he is certain that the sun has set, because of the hadeeths “The people will continue to be fine so long as they hasten to break the fast” and “The most beloved of the slaves of Allah to Allah are those who are quickest to break the fast.” The best way for the one who is fasting is to break his fast with a few dates, then delay eating until after Maghrib prayer, so that he may combine the Sunnah of hastening to break the fast and praying Maghrib at the beginning of its time, in congregation, following the example of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). With regard to the hadeeths, “There is no prayer in the presence of food or when resisting the urge to relieve oneself” and “If ‘Isha’ and dinner come at the same time, start with dinner,” and similar reports, what is meant is if a person is offered food or if he comes to eat, then he should start with the food before praying, so that he can pray without his mind being focused on the food and his prayer then will be offered with proper focus and humility. But he should not ask for food to be brought before praying if that means that he will miss out on offering the prayer at the beginning of its time or praying in congregation. And Allah is the source of strength; may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and Companions. End quote. Translating-Jihad’s Completely Fraudulent Translations Posted on 26 February 2011 by Danios By: Dawood (guest contributor) and Danios The smoking gun against Al-Mutarjim, creator of the Translating-Jihad blog… We recently published an article criticizing the anti-Islam website known as Translating-Jihad. The owner of this website, Al-Mutarjim (the blogger formerly known as Al-Mutarajjam), parades around as a qualified and reliable Arabic translator. Our article questioned his Arabic language skills, and we showed that he can’t even translate the word “translator”–which he kept as his user name for months on end. For an entire year, he was calling himself The Translated (Al-Mutarajjam) instead of The Translator (Al-Mutarjim)…he only changed it after we pointed out the error (and then he scrambled to cover up his mistake). Al-Mutarjim issued a rebuttal. The gist of his response is that he made a mistake (“so what?”) but that doesn’t change the fact that his translations are accurate. He argued that we are focusing on this “minor mistake” because we can’t deal with the substance of his translations.
