Blackout In Besieged Gaza City

Recommended Posts

From Gaza to Muslims all over the globe, an urgent call: Children are dying, there is no electricity in hospitals.

O Allah, help our besieged sisters and brothers in Gaza.

Blackout in besieged Gaza City[using large font size is not allowed]

Lights have gone out in Gaza City after the territory's only power plant was closed down due to a fuel shortage.

Darkness descended on Gaza as the second of the plant's two working turbines was switched off on the third day of a crippling israeli blockade of the territory.

Sunday's shutdown has prompted fears of a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinians said the worst affected could be the health sector, with hospitals failing to provide services in the absence of electricity.

"At least 800,000 people are now in darkness," Derar Abu Sissi, general director of the plant, said.

"The catastrophe will affect hospitals, medical clinics, water wells, houses, factories, all aspects of life."

Panic buying

Power outages have become commonplace in the Gaza Strip in recent months after israel declared the area a "hostile entity" and began restricting fuel supplies.

Ahead of the shutdown, residents bought up batteries and candles, as well as basic foods like rice, flour and cooking oil. Bakeries stopped operating because they did not have power or flour.

UNRWA, the UN organisation supporting Palestinian refugees, warned the shortages would drastically affect hospitals, sewage treatment plants and water facilities.

"The logic of this defies basic humanitarian standards," Christopher Gunness, UNRWA spokesman, said.

Patients at risk

Dr Medhat Abbas, head of the crisis management unit at the health ministry in Gaza, said that electricity from generators would only be available for a few more hours at the Al-Nasser children's hospital.

"These patients and these children are facing their destiny and they will die soon," he told Al Jazeera.

"They escaped from their poor houses were they have very cold weather ... The families brought them here to be saved in the incubator. Now the incubator and the nursery will be out of electricity.

"What sort of humanitarian law is this?"

He said the blackout would also deprive cancer and intensive care patients of their treatment as well as spoiling blood and vaccines that were being stored.

Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland in Gaza said that it was not only power generation that would be affected.

"It also means no fuel for the generators that fuel the water pumps - a lot of the water in Gaza is deep beneath the surface, and it has to be pumped to the surface - so no fuel can also mean no water."

'Collective punishment'

The UN has said israel should not collectively punish Gaza's population while responding to security threats.

The organisation has criticised israel's decision to close border crossings into Gaza, preventing aid deliveries to the 1.5 million people living in the territory, saying on Saturday that the move could provoke a humanitarian crisis.

Insha'Allah those zionist pigs fry in hell. Let's pray, all 2.6 billion Muslims of us, that Allah subhanahu wataala destroy all the zionists and their allies, starting from Bush and his gang, to the ugly Arab leaders who sold themselves to the devil and even danced with swords. May Allah subhanahu wataala crush them all like insects and flies.

These are very sad moments, and a disgrace for all humanity, to watch your fellow humans being seiged to purposely get them dead. 1,600,000 Palestinians are dying out of hunger, lack of food and medicine, for 8 months now. And as if all this wasn't enough, now they cut fuel and electricity on them. How on earth small babies are going to survives, and how will patients breathe oxygen? Al Jazirah are now airing dying patients in their hospital beds, while their loved ones are trying to get them some oxygen using hand pumps! Streets are lurking in total darkness, bakeries stopped working, sewerage water filled up the streets, no transportation, no ambulance, no emergency services, and water stations are about to stop working in a few hours as we speak. what kind of humans are we in this whole world? We should all pressure our governments to act immediately and stop those zionist criminals and their supporting american and western allies.

As Muslims, we should sacrifice all that we can give, to stand by our brothers and siser in Gazza, were true Muslims refuse to surrender to the zionist criminals, and insist on resisting the brutal occupation, risking their lives and the lives of their families to defend masjid Al Aqsa, the first of the two qiblas, the second of the two masjids and the third of the two harams. They defend it with their blood and lives. They could have chosen to give up and live for themselves comfortably under zionist conditions, but they chose the hard way, because it is the only way to deal with the zionist lairs and criminals: armed resistance.

If the plight of the philistines is really such a concern throughout the Muslim world, why are they herded into squalid concentration camps for decades wherever they go? What happened to that brotherly love we keep hearing about?

Because people like you vote for devils the likes of Bush and his gang. Because your western systems plotted long ago to install and support traitors and western agents to lead Muslim countries, who in turn supress their people and govern them in a police state environment, preventing them from even protesting to support our slain brothers and sisters out there. It all comes down to you actually, and all the innocent-looking, peaceful-loving, kind-hearted bet-caring westerners. Your hand is stained with the blood of the Palestinians who are dying as we speak, while you're busy condemning the slain innocence for the horrible crime of resisting their brutal occupation.

I wonder if we can we consider the desire to wipe israel off the map as a sign of a brotherly love? Anyway, some Muslims help with their prayers, some with their money, others with their writings, etc. Maybe it's not that optimal, but some of us do care ...

Zionists are the worst racists who persecute, terrorize, murder or massacre Semite people such as Arabs and Palestinian people. And the brutal and barbaric Zionists leaders are planning to wipe out Semite people so that they can establish Greater israel:

"We must expel Arabs and take their places."

-- David Ben Gurion, 1937, Ben Gurion and the Palestine Arabs, Oxford University Press, 1985.

"We must use terror, assassination, intimidation, land confiscation, and the cutting of all social services to rid the Galilee of its Arab population."-- David Ben-Gurion, May 1948, to the General Staff. From Ben-Gurion, A Biography, by Michael Ben-Zohar, Delacorte, New York 1978.

"Let us not ignore the truth among ourselves ... politically we are the aggressors and they defend themselves... The country is theirs, because they inhabit it, whereas we want to come here and settle down, and in their view we want to take away from them their country."-- David Ben Gurion, quoted on pp 91-2 of Chomsky's Fateful Triangle, which appears in Simha Flapan's "Zionism and the Palestinians pp 141-2 citing a 1938 speech.

"We walked outside, Ben-Gurion accompanying us. Allon repeated his question, What is to be done with the Palestinian population?' Ben-Gurion waved his hand in a gesture which said 'Drive them out!"-- Yitzhak Rabin, leaked censored version of Rabin memoirs, published in the New York Times, 23 October 1979.

"There is no such thing as a Palestinian people... It is not as if we came and threw them out and took their country. They didn't exist."

-- Golda Meir, statement to The Sunday Times, 15 June, 1969.

"How can we return the occupied territories? There is nobody to return them to."

-- Golda Meir, March 8, 1969.

"israel should have exploited the repression of the demonstrations in China, when world attention focused on that country, to carry out mass expulsions among the Arabs of the territories."-- Benyamin Netanyahu, then israeli Deputy Foreign Minister, former Prime Minister of israel, speaking to students at Bar Ilan University, from the israeli journal Hotam, November 24, 1989.

"Everybody has to move, run and grab as many (Palestinian) hilltops as they can to enlarge the (Jewish) settlements because everything we take now will stay ours...Everything we don't grab will go to them."-- Ariel Sharon, israeli Foreign Minister, addressing a meeting of the Tsomet Party, Agence France Presse, Nov. 15, 1998.

Zionists are not interested in any peace-agreements for Zionists are the ones who are going to break the peace-agreements by attacking and terrorizing Palestine so there would be no peace in the Middle East until Muslims defeat the Zionists and Zionist puppets.

Brother ######, thank you for those quotes.

This one seems to fit the current plan:

"We must use terror, assassination, intimidation, land confiscation, and the cutting of all social services to rid the Galilee of its Arab population."-- David Ben-Gurion

It seems they plan to repeat this.. this time it looks that they plan to starve the poor Palestinians to force them to flee to Egypt and live in Sinai, then re-occupy Gaza and build huge settlements there. Then probably years later, occupy Sinai to kill them again, then force them to flee, and so on..

Hi all

For whats its worth to you guys, my thoughts go out to these poor people having this inflicted upon them. Ive been working a lot lately but what on earth prompted this sudden stupid action by israel?

And what on earth is this suppose to mean......

The UN has said israel should not collectively punish Gaza's population while responding to security threats.

Ok then what are the UN going to do about.? This sort of thing just makes everything worse and increases hate to israel & the West ( But please do not generalize about the west so much in your comments, we didnt all vote for the present government in the UK or the USA for that matter. )

I hate to admit it ( kind of ) but i can see why you get so upset about israel, how DO they keep getting away with what they do in regards to the UN?

Peace

Thanks Suppersion for sharing our concerns and frustration.

The UN is now a US thing. And the US now is a zionist property, so that makes the UN a zionist thingie.

I know at least half of the westerners are supporters of true freedom and call for the end of wars and occupations. It is people like you that make us still cling to hope, perhaps we may see a glimpse of justice before we leave this cruel world.

Angry Gazans storm Rafah crossing

Palestinians demand Egypt open its border to ease israel's siege of the territory.

Hamas leaders met by candlelight in the

besieged Gaza Strip [Reuters]

Dozens of Palestinian protesters have stormed the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, demanding that the frontier be opened to ease the blockade imposed on the territory by israel.

Several protesters were wounded as Egyptian police opened fire in the air and used batons and water canons to push back the protesters.

The demonstrations on Tuesday came as israel allowed a few fuel trucks into Gaza, marginally easing the punishing blockade of the Hamas-run territory.

Rafah is the only border crossing out of the Gaza Strip that bypasses israel.

Angry protesters complained that Gaza was under siege from both israel and neighbouring Arabs.

Um Ahmad, a Palestinian woman demonstrating at the Rafah crossing, told Al Jazeera: "The Arabs should be united with us and not against us. This is an appeal to all the Arabs. They should help us lift the blockade, they should stand with us."

Egypt called on Hamas to urge residents of the Gaza Strip to avoid further unrest.

Hossam Zaki, the foreign ministry spokesman, expressed Egypt's "deep regret at the events witnessed at the Rafah border crossing".

Egypt "asks those in control of the Gaza Strip to work to avoid the repetition of such a situation", he said.

At least four Palestinians were wounded during the protest, medics said.

Eleven Egyptian policemen were injured, including one from gunfire and the other 10 from rocks thrown at them.

Humanitarian crisis

Meanwhile, amid mounting international fears of a humanitarian crisis, two lorries carrying cooking gas and three with diesel for generators passed through israel's Nahal Oz border crossing, east of Gaza City, early on Tuesday morning.

Gaza power

israel normally supplies 60 per cent of the electricity for Gaza's 1.5 million inhabitants

Gaza needs around 240 megawatt of electricity, but normally receives only about 200 megawatts, with 8 per cent from Egypt

israel is the only source of industrial fuel for Gaza's power station

israel stopped supplying industrial fuel supplies to Gaza on January 19

The EU pays israel around $10m per month for Gaza's industrial fuel

It marked the first time supplies had entered Gaza since late on Thursday, when Ehud Barak, the israeli defence minister, ordered the territory sealed off in response to rocket fire.

Gaza City was plunged into darkness after its only power plant was shut down on Sunday, as fuel supplies dried up under the israeli blockade.

But with israel allowing limited supply, lights were back in most of Gaza City by Tuesday afternoon.

israeli tanker lorries brought in 700,000 litres of fuel, enough to provide electricity to Gaza City for two days.

Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, however, called on israel to fully lift the blockade, calling a partial easing of the lockdown "insufficient".

"This is insufficient and we will continue our efforts to get a total lifting of the blockade," Abbas told reporters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Abbas also renewed his criticism of rocket fire against israel from Gaza.

"It is not the people who fire these rockets," Abbas said. "We have condemned these futile launchings in the past and we continue to do so. They must stop."

Defiant Hamas

But Khaled Meshaal, the Hamas leader based in Damascus, said the rocket fire would continue as long as israel continues its "onslaught" on Gaza and the West Bank.

"Let israel stop its aggression and its occupation of Palestinian land and the resistance, including rockets, will stop," he said in an interview.

Palestinian rockets

Palestinian rockets are crude homemade weapons fired by Hamas and other fighters from Gaza into israel, with a maximum range of 10km

The rockets have killed 10 israelis since 2005, while more than 700 Palestinians have died in israeli raids over the same period

Rocket attacks have increased sharply since April 2006

Between 2,500-3,000 settlers, out of 23,000, have fled Sderot because of the near-daily attacks

The main impact of the rockets is psychological torment.

The impact of the blockade, which has left homes in the dark, affected hospitals and caused sewage to flood the streets, has sparked international condemnation.

The Iraqi parliament unanimously condemned israeli raids and its siege of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday.

The parliament approved a draft law to provide Gazans with aid, including food, medicine and oil in co-ordination with the Arab League and the United Nations.

On Monday, the European Union accused israel of carrying out "collective punishment" of Gaza's civilian population.

Kyriacos Triantaphyllides, a European parliament member, told Al Jazeera: "What is happening there [in Gaza] is a major catastrophe on very big scale and it is not enough just to lift the blockade for a little while.

"I think the action of israel against Gaza, which constitutes collective punishment for the whole people of Gaza, is to be deplored by the international community. We do not agree with this kind of measures.

Sparring at UN

israeli and Palestinian envoys meanwhile traded accusations in the UN Security Council as the 15-nation body met to discuss the Gaza crisis.

Riyad Mansour, the permanent Palestinian observer to the United Nations, described the situation as "absolutely untenable".

In Video

Anger at Rafah

"The israeli policy of brinkmanship is creating a humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, heightening fears and tensions, inciting, provoking and fuelling the vicious and dreaded cycle of violence," he said.

Gilad Cohen, the israeli envoy, rejected Mansour's accusation that israel was acting in violation of international law.

"It is the duty of all states to ensure the right to life and safety of its people, especially from vicious acts of violence and terrorism," Cohen told the council.

Argh that's disgusting. It's one thing to not support Palestine, but it's another to refuse to help the innocent Muslims dying.

If the silence of the Arab leader is disgusting, it's way more disgusting to see that a Jewish state can do such a thing to Palestinian gentiles. I think it's not about not wanting to help, but the Palestinian land is now under the control of the Zionist state. They can't do anything freely to help the Palestinians, unless israel permits them to do so. Remember the millions of dollars of the donors' money frozen by israel?

Wassalam,

Refugees are people escaping from the israeli state, and if they're in Arab land, why should they be refused?
