Indian family pardons convicted Pak killer

From R Gopakumar DH News Service Thiruvananthapuram:

In what should be an eye-opener for nations fighting over borders, the family of an Indian who was murdered by a Pakistani 25 years ago in the United Arab Emirates has pardoned the man on death row. P T Murrath of Perin-thalmanna in Malappuram district was only 21 years when he was stabbed to death by Akhtar Hussain at Al-Ain in the UAE where the Keralite was running a hotel in 1980. Hussain and an accomplice, Mushtaq, also a Pakistani, were trying to burgle the hotel one night when Murrath and his friend awoke and attempted to chase away the intruders. When Murrath pinned down Mushtaq, he was stabbed in the back by Hussain. He later succumbed to his injuries.

“The UAE police caught both of them the next morning. Since Mushtaq was staying illegally in the UAE, he was bundled back to Pakistan but only after his hands were severed for the crime,†Murrath’s brother P T Khalid told Deccan Herald by phone from Malappuram. Hussain who was 45 years old then was imprisoned and was sentenced to death according to Shariat law. However, he successfully evaded the sentence from being carried out by contesting the court ruling. “Our initial stand was that he should also die for murdering our brother,†says Khalid, whose parents are no more. Murrath was the youngest of 11 children. “But we recently rethought our position after a Keralite from Malappuram who was also imprisoned in the same jail met Hussain,†Mr Khalid, a school teacher, revealed.

According to him, Hussain pleaded with the man to tell Murrath’s family to rethink once and for all: “We examined the case. Here he was... having already spent 25 years in prison for the crime. Even in our country, life-term convicts do not spend that much time in prison.â€

He said they informed UAE authorities of their wish to pardon Hussain.
