Amr

Recommended Posts

Hi !

I have just started to learn reading and writing Arabic by myself and have a little difficults

with 'a' letter.

If I see the popular singer Amr Diab, its name is written as ÚãÑ not as I would do ÇãÑ.

Can someone tells me if the first 'a' is shorter than the second or which case one or another is used ?

Thanks

Ales

The first letter in that Arabic name has no equivalent in English, so to compromise, we use the letter 'a', 'e' or 'o' instead. This is only its vowel, not the sound of the letter itself. The letter is as you typed it above: ع

btw, the name of that singer is: عمرو

the name: Omar is a different name: عمر
