A Gulf in Giving: Oil-Rich States Starve the World Food Program

Friday, May 09, 2008

By George Russell

Associated Press

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his top lieutenants on Monday are convening the first meeting of the U.N.’s Task Force on the Global Food Crisis. Ban says it will “study the root causes of the crisis,†and propose solutions for “coordinated global action†at a summit of world leaders in June.

Ban might want to consider convincing the oil-rich nations of the Middle East to provide more than the near-invisible amount of money they currently give to the World Food Program (WFP), the U.N.’s food-giving arm, which is charged with alleviating the food crisis.

WFP internal documents show that the major oil producing nations of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) gives almost nothing to the food organization, even as skyrocketing oil prices and swollen oil revenues contribute to the very crisis that the U.N. claims could soon add 100 million more people to the world’s starving masses.

The overwhelming bulk of the burden in feeding the world’s starving poor remains with the United States and a small group of other predominately Western nations, a situation that the WFP has done little so far to change, even as it has asked for another $775 million in donations to ease the crisis.

Donor listings on WFP’s website show that this year, as in every year since 1999, the U.S. is far and away the biggest aid provider to WFP. Since 2001, U.S. donations to the food agency have averaged more than $1.16 billion annually — or more than five times as much as the next biggest donor, the European Commission.

This year, the U.S. had contributed $362.7 million to WFP just through May 4, according to the website. That figure does not include another $250 million above the planned yearly contribution that was promised by President George W. Bush in the wake of WFP’s April warning that a “silent tsunami†of rising food costs would add dramatically to the world population living in hunger. Nor does it include another $770 million in food aid that President Bush has asked Congress to provide as soon as possible.

On the other hand, Saudi Arabia, with oil revenues last year of $164 billion, does not even appear on the website donor list for 2008.

And while Canada, Australia, Western Europe and Japan have hastened to pony up an additional $260 million in aid since WFP’s latest appeal, the world organization told FOX News, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the international oil cartel, tossed in a grand total of $1.5 million in addition to the $50,000 it had previously donated.

The OPEC total amounts to roughly one minute and 10 seconds worth of the organization’s estimated $674 billion in annual oil revenues in 2007 — revenues that will be vastly exceeded in 2008 with the continuing spiral in world oil prices.

The only other major oil exporter who made the WFP list of 2008 donors was the United Arab Emirates, which kicked in $50,000. UAE oil revenues in 2007 were $63 billion.

By contrast, the poverty-stricken African republic of Burkina Faso is listed as donating more than $600,000, and Bangladesh, perennial home of many of the world’s hungriest people, is listed as donating nearly $5.8 million.

What really upsets me more than I can express politely, is the combined efforts of OPEC at the source Iran who declared war on the poor by attacking the US Dollar, by refusing to deal in dollars anymore, and now WHO are the people that suffer as a result of this effort?

The poor, who struggle to pay for gas to get to work, the FARMER who struggles to harvest and plant FOOD.

What kind of wisdom is this?

Why can't these people SEE what they are doing in their hatred of the Bush Administration?

I used to support Iran, and their president, now after doing this and saying the things he does, instead of working for peace by promoting a Single State Solution in israel, I question his motives and his faith...

All this guy is doing now is to turn the World's poor against him and his people by making the poor poorer......

Iran is a sovereign Muslim country so it has its right to defend and protect its independence against the US-Zionist regimes that are terrorizing Muslim countries. Venezuela is also against the US regime. Bush is a hypocrite who spend so much money on the illegal American invasion and occupation of Muslim countries and he is supporting and financing the israeli regime of terror so that it can terrorize Muslims and non-Muslims efficiently and effectively.

And Bush doesn't care about millions of the homeless Americans, the poor Americans and the American veterans. All he cares about is Zionism, Zionists and israel.

Jahz is right .

Oil rich countries blessed by God with oil , use their blessing as weapons , for that weapon will only boomerang ...LOOK AT EGYPT !!!!!

WHO IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK Is FEEDING THE EGYPTIANS? WHERE DOES THE MAJORITY OF THE GRAIN COME FROM ? YEMEN ? KUWAIT ? SYRIA ? ARABIA ?

NO .....it comes from the USA and some from western Europe , and the higher the price goes to produce these foodstuffs the more people of "the oil rich kingdoms " will pay , and the more of their less fortunate brothers will starve ....like in Bangladesh , Malaysia and Indonesia .

For all your parroting propaganda , and screaming ###### , the USA is STILL and HAS BEEN the # 1 giver of charity and grain ,wheat etc in the entire world .

Iran has the right to make the Poor Poorer? What does the guy who lives on 5 dollars an hour pays most of that for rent have to do with George Bush? What about the farmer who pays out almost all of his profits for fuel to farm his land have to do with the Zionests?

Venezuela what does that communist who nationalizes all the farmers profits have to do with the Aid Organizations in the US that can't pay the shipping costs anymore to move food to the needy in the poverty stricken in Africa?

I don't understand how you think that Iran has the right to make fuel costs so fricken high that even those who they support in Gaza can no longer pay for the little fuel that the Zionists let thru the blockade?

Come on, Iran can't think thru how to end the Apartheid in israel, if they would stop sponsoring death and destruction World Opinion would have traction to end the Zionism once and for all time, but every single rocket fired, every single death spends the political capitol gained by the horrific atrocities inflicted upon the Pals by the Zionests..

Think man, think..

Americans give Bush the power to govern USA and he use his power to attack, invade and occupy Muslim countries illegally. The US regime and the israeli regime of terror are fabricating evidence to trick the world into believing falsely that Iran is producing nuclear weapons. The fact is the Iranian government is developing nuclear energy to generate electricity to meet domestic need. And now the US regime and its allies are intimidating Iran.

The US regime also tried to overthrow Chávez who was first elected president of Venezuela in 1998 by popular mandate by supporting the Venezuelan coup attempt of 2002 that was a failed coup d'état on April 11, 2002 that lasted only 47 hours, whereby the head of state President Hugo Chávez was illegally detained, the National Assembly and the Supreme Court dissolved, and the country's Constitution unheeded. The United States and Chile quickly acknowledged the de facto pro-US Carmona government.

Since many Americans have elected Bush as the US president, the Americans are responsible for their choice and the brutal crimes committed by the US regime in Iraq, Afghanistan etc. And the Americans have to face and suffer the consequences of supporting Bush and his brutal regime. In other word, the Americans have to face the music for their part in electing the Bush's regime.

Why do you Jahz blame the victims of the US-Zionist terrorism and condone the brutal US regime and the israeli regime of terror? Think man, think.....

Ironically Americans are probably footing part of ######s food bill ....he benefits from American generosity [the highest in the world ] and benefits from American Technology ..lol...even Zionist technology .

There's a word for this type of behavior ......it's called hypocrisy .

And if ###### thinks that the rest of the world is stupid enough to believe Iran is "simply developing electric power " and not seeking to build a nuclear weapon ? well ....I got a bridge I want to sell him in Brooklyn .

OOooops , Chavez the "new eternal victim " gets caught with hispants down :

Interpol: Colombia has real rebel data

Published: 5/15/08, 5:45 PM EDT

By FRANK BAJAK and JOHN LEICESTER

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Interpol said Thursday that computer files suggesting Venezuela was arming and financing Colombian guerrillas came from a rebel camp and were not tampered with, discrediting Venezuela's assertions that Colombia faked them.

Interpol's findings are sure to increase pressure on Venezuela's socialist president, Hugo Chavez, to explain his relationship with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. More revelations are likely to emerge, since Interpol also turned over to Colombia 983 files it decrypted.

"We are absolutely certain that the computer exhibits that our experts examined came from a FARC terrorist camp," said Interpol's secretary general, Ronald Noble, adding: "No one can ever question whether or not the Colombian government tampered with the seized FARC computers."

Colombian commandos recovered the three Toshiba Satellite laptop computers, two external hard drives and three USB memory sticks after destroying the rebel camp just across the border in Ecuador. FARC foreign minister Raul Reyes and 24 others were killed in the March 1 raid.

Chavez has mocked Colombia's revelations about "the supposed computer of Raul Reyes" and questioned how a computer could survive a bombardment. He denies arming or funding the FARC, though he openly sympathizes with Latin America's most powerful rebel army.

Venezuela's embassy in Washington accused U.S. and Colombian officials of using the Interpol report to "spread the most reckless and irresponsible accusations" in a coordinated campaign that "closely resembles the steps usually taken by the Bush administration in order to generate ... instability and wars in other countries."

But Interpol was emphatic that the documents are authentic, and said the computers were found in metal cases that protected them during the raid.

"Mr. Reyes is now dead. But they were definitely his computers, his disks, his hardware," Noble said.

The Interpol study was done at Colombia's request, and Colombia got a major bonus when Interpol ran 10 computers nonstop for two weeks to crack the encrypted files. Noble said it was up to Colombia to decide whether to make their contents public. Interpol also gave Colombia a separate confidential report for use in criminal investigations.

The 39-page public forensic report by the France-based international police agency concluded Colombian authorities did not always follow internationally accepted methods for handling computer evidence, but said that didn't taint the data.

Interpol said it reviewed 610 gigabytes of data including 210,888 images, 37,872 written documents, 22,481 Web pages, 10,537 sound and video files, 7,989 email addresses and 452 spreadsheets.

Interpol limited itself to verifying whether Colombia altered the files and correctly handled the evidence, but did not address the contents of the documents, even making a point to use two forensic experts - from Australia and Singapore - who do not read Spanish.

A Colombian anti-terrorism officer accessed the computers before they were handed over to Interpol, leaving multiple traces in operating system files, which Noble said runs against internationally accepted protocol. But Colombian authorities properly told Interpol's experts about the episode and Noble praised their professionalism.

Noble said he tried to get Chavez and Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, whom the documents also link to the FARC, to work with Interpol in its investigation, but neither responded.

"I've done everything in my power to invite Venezuela and Ecuador to participate," said Noble, a former U.S. Treasury enforcement chief in his second term heading the 186-member police organization.

Colombia has been leaking details from the documents since the day after the raid. The most damning evidence against Chavez was revealed to The Associated Press by a senior Colombian official.

More than a dozen rebel messages detail close cooperation with Venezuela, including rebel training facilities on Venezuelan soil and a meeting inside Venezuela's equivalent of the Pentagon. They suggest Venezuela wanted to loan the rebels US$250 million (euro190 million) and help them get Russian weapons and possibly even surface-to-air missiles.

"They are serious allegations about Venezuela supplying arms and support to a terrorist organization," U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in Washington. "Certainly, that has deep implications for the people of the region."

Some U.S. Republicans renewed calls Thursday for the State Department to add Venezuela to its list of state terror sponsors, which would prompt economic sanctions against a key U.S. oil supplier.

Ambassador to Death Squads

Who is John Negroponte?

By GHALI HASSAN

The White House has appointed Mr. John Dimitris Negroponte to be United States ambassador to Iraq. He will preside over the largest embassy in the world, and housed in the Republic Palace (misleadingly named Saddam's Palace by the U.S. occupation). He will be protected by high concrete walls, barbed wires and more than 150,000 occupation force, including several thousands of foreign mercenaries armed to the teeth with the most violent tools. Mr. Negroponte is Greek-American diplomat. He is currently leading the diplomatic war against the people of Iraq as the U.S. envoy at the United Nations (UN) in New York. Negroponte is Jewish. A friend in Spain expressed his deep concern to me recently: " to appoint a Jew as ambassador to the Arab country that has been devastated because of the will of a cabal of Jewish neocons headed by Wolfowitz Bush is just an accessory -, is like trying to put off a fire using buckets of gasoline".

Mr. Negroponte has served as U.S. Ambassador to Honduras from 1981-1985; a period during which the U.S. military aid to Honduras grew from $5 million to nearly $100 million, and more than $200 million in economic aid, making Honduras the largest aid recipient in the region. Honduras was the launching pad from which the Reagan administration runs its violent "war on terror" in Central American. The U.S-backed atrocities and terror were condemned by the International World Court in the Hague (1). Like most of his colleagues in the Bush administration, Mr. Negroponte is a "recycled reaganites".

At the time Mr. Negroponte was in Honduras, Honduras was a military dictatorship. Kidnapping, rape, torture and executions of dissidents was rampant. The military top and middle ranks were U.S-trained at the School of the Americas (SOA), the Harvard version of the CIA, based in Fort Benning, Georgia. According to Human Rights Watch, graduates of the SOA are responsible for the worst human rights abuses and torture of dissidents in Latin America. Some of its 60,000 graduates are notorious Manuel Noriega and Omar Torrijos of Panama, Leopoldo Galtieri and Roberto Viola of Argentina, Juan Velasco Alvarado of Peru, Guillermo Rodriguez of Ecuador, Hugo Banzer Suarez of Bolivia and Gustavo Álvarez Martínez, Honduras security police chief and later Honduran top military commander.

In Honduras the army intelligence unit, Battalion 3-16, which was involved in kidnappings, rape, torture and killing of suspected dissidents. In 1995 Gary Cohn and Ginger Thompson of The Baltimore Sun unearthed massive and substantiated evidence from various sources pointing the finger at Mr. Negroponte knowledge of the crimes. The reporters also found that hundreds of Hondurans "were kidnapped, tortured and killed in the 1980s by a secret army unit trained and supported by the CIA"(2). Reliable evidence from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in Honduras alleged that Negroponte oversaw the expansion of U.S training camp and military base on Honduran territory, where US-trained Contras terrorists, and where the military secretly detained, tortured and executed Honduran suspected dissidents.

During his years in Honduras, Negroponte acquired a reputation, justified, as an old-fashioned imperialist, and devoted to Realpolitik (3). Mr. Negroponte will bring to Iraq his version of "democracy" à la Latin America, where the people vote for one of two candidates every half decade, in which civilian leaders have to obey U.S-controlled militaries or face dismissal by military force. Mr. Negroponte will find the Iraqi soil fertile for his version of democracy and human rights. The U.S. administration turn blind eye to violations of human rights by their own troops and mercenaries. Nazi's methods of torture, sexual abuses and murder of Iraqi prisoners by the racist soldiers of the occupying forces are in use immediately after the invasion and occupation of the Iraq.

The occupying powers also ignores the criminal activities of four militia thugs, which according to exile Iraqis have murdered many Iraqi academics and intellectuals. The Iraqi-born novelist and artist Haifa Zangana wrote in the Guardian of London: "the peshmergas of the two Kurdish parties; the Badr brigade of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq; Ahmed Chalabi's troops; and the ex-Ba'athist Mukhabarats under Iyad Alawi's national accord. These militias are run by members of the IGC and no one can touch them"(4). The occupying powers have not put an end to these violent crimes.

Recently, Mr. Negroponte talked about: "real dialogue between our military commanders, the new Iraqi government and, I think, the United States mission as well". He said: "the American military is going to have the freedom to act in their self-defence, and they are going to be free to operate in Iraq as they best see fit". Negroponte stint at the UN was to shield israel crimes against the Palestinians, and to coerce smaller nations at the Security Council exercising the threat of U.S. power.

Negroponte diplomatic responsibilities were appalling. Democracy and human rights are not on Negroponte preferred menu. Negroponte will be serving the interests of U.S. tyranny and U.S. Corporations in Iraq. Negroponte will bring to Iraq the economic disasters inflicted on the people of Latin America by the U.S. and U.S-backed corporations. Negroponte is not suitable to serve in the current political environment of Iraq.

In the past, Muslim countries had donated money, food etc to other countries that were hit by natural disasters through the international organizations. Then Muslim countries found out that the international organizations are controlled by Christian missionaries so the money and the food donated by Muslims were handed over by the Christian organizations to victims of natural disasters in the name of Christianity. In other word, Christian missionaries are taking advantages of Muslim donations for Christian missionary works.

I will never support killing another human being unless it is ordered by a court of law, or they are out to hurt my family... Supporting war of economics or war of bullets is evil, and you know this, and I can quote sura and verse to back it up, and you know which ones too..

Why don't you change your tune and start lobbying for a peaceful struggle against Zionism?

Lobby for the long term empowerment of the poor, by condemning this assault on them thru the price of oil being raised out of reach of those who need it?

Huh? Please tell me your definition of a Muslim or a Believer. Do you support the Oppressive Prices of Oil and the people dying because of it? Do you support Usary? Do you support the killing of Believers in God? All of which I can show you Sura and Verse where God condemns such behavior. Iran is committing these sins by condemning the poor to more oppression already heaped upon them by the economic systems here in the US and those farmers that sell their crops for barley enough to pay the mortgage, if the crops are not destroyed by foul weather. Iran is sponsoring the killing of believers in God, and you know full well that those can be Christian or Jewish, it is not about a political system here, that I endorse by being a Muslim, it is BELIEVERS and RIGHTOUSNESS I support, not the rhetoric that you endorse by blind support of those who are fighting George's army. I have been fighting with my life to change things here in the USA. I was against those in favor of this war when we were in the small minority, since we have managed, with no help of your kind, to turn this around where the candidates for President have ON THEIR PLATFORM to withdraw from Iraq. I have fought for a SINGLE STATE solution to END the Aparthied in israel. But you know we fight different than you do, we fight with our WORDS, not GUNS, we don't KILL our enemies we don't think God needs that kind of help. He does that very well with car accidents, cancer, heart attacks, suicides and the like. Soft words spoken at the right time and place break bones, wise guy.

So why don't you join us? Join us in fighting Oppression with WORDS not BOMBS, Call a Spade a Spade and not align yourself to any particular person, stop the idolatry of men and start Worshiping God Alone, and fight insjustice wherever you see it, no matter if it is you brother, wife, father sister, or someone thousands of miles away that with a decision destroys the lives of those who used to support them by raising the price of oil and evicting them out of their homes that they can no longer afford because they lost their job, cause they can't afford to drive there anymore...

Wake up and think thru what you are doing and saying before you accuse me of not being a Muslim, or Kafir, you don't even know me, and God doesn't need your help determining my intentions or my religion...
