umAhmad 1 Posted April 30, 2006 Assalamu alaikum, Br. AbuRafay, I am sorry to say, but I thought you would be one of those persons' who would discourage such smileys. I guess I am wrong................Sorry, wassalamu alaikum, sis. umAhmad.

~mehnaz~ 4 Posted April 30, 2006 I am sorry to say, but I thought you would be one of those persons' who would discourage such smileys. :D What's wrong with using such smileys? They're cute, fun and harmless, and as brother Aburafay said msn or the other chat programs are a great place to use them. Brother aburafay, if u right click them and click "save image as" you will be able to add them to ur emoticons by clicking on the "create" button in the emoticons box in the conversation window. (assuming ur using msn) :D :D

anonymous 0 Posted May 3, 2006 :D I think sister umAhmed was referring to the impermissibility of creating animating objects. The following was taken askimam(contact admin if its a beneficial link): Question: I want to ask that the use of Emotions i.e. smiles in chat or email comes under drawing pictures? Answer: The use of emotional signs, for example, smile, sad, etc. in a cellphone falls in the category of animate pictures. It is prohibited to make use of such emotional signs in a cellphone. and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best Mufti Ebrahim Desai (www.)"you can't post links until you reach 50 posts_askimam(contact admin if its a beneficial link)/fatwa/fatwa.php?askid=a7ea7661367a6673419fa66e89dca75"]Source :D
umAhmad 1 Posted May 3, 2006 Assalamu alaikum, Yes Br. anonymous JazaakAllahu Khairan, you pointed out my exact feelings regarding the matter. I feel very strongly about it and this is one of the issues among others in which I don't see myself compromising inshaAllah. May Allah guide us all on the right path. Wassalamu Alaikum, umAhmad. - IQRA - 0 Posted May 3, 2006 :D indeed..i also strongly agree with Aunty umAhmad's concern.... The Islamic smilieys would look excellent without the pics.....but mashALLAH the quotes are good. :D

shiningstar 1 Posted May 3, 2006 :D referring to the impermissibility of creating animating objects. Without going off topic can I just mention; there is a difference of opinion on this issue you can read the other side of it here: (www.)"you can't post links until you reach 50 posts_www.islamtoday(contact admin if its a beneficial link)/english/show_detail_section.cfm?q_id=36&main_cat_id=1"]you can't post links until you reach 50 posts_www.islamtoday(contact admin if its a beneficial link)/english/show_det...6&main_cat_id=1 :D

So according to the fatwa, ": )" would be fine as a text form to use as an expression of "smile", but as far as I can see it's not referring to animating 'images'. Allah knows best. :D
darla_1753 0 Posted May 4, 2006 Salaam, whilst I can understand that Islam has a prohibition on images (and lets take the line that smilies are fobidden as I don't now enough to debate it) the use of smilies is usually to ensure a meaning is clear and so avoid offense or upset. To me, therefore, it comes down to a balance of harms. Is it better to use a picture which is forbidden or to cause offense by a meaning not to be clear? If the prohibition on images is because of idol worship then the 'cartoon-y' nature of smilies makes this outcome so highly unlikely that I believe it would not be too far to say it simply wouldn't happen. Given that the use of smilies will not lead ot idol worship but also given that their use prevents offense and so increases 'neighbourliness' and enoucourages goodwill, could they not be seen as the lesser of two harms? Either offense is (unwittingly) caused or a (highly unrealistic, comic) image is used. Just my two penniesworth, Peace and Love, DARLA
