What If...

What would you do!

  1. 1. One day, you wake up in hospital. In the nearby bed lies a world famous violinist who is connected to you with various tubes and machines. To your horror, you discover that you have been kidnapped by the Music Appreciation Society. Aware of the maestro's impending death, they hooked you up to the violinist. If you stay in the hospital bed, connected to the violinist, he will be totally cured in nine months. You are unlikely to suffer harm. No one else can save him. Do you have an obligation to stay connected?

  2. 2. A runaway trolley car is hurtling down a track. In its path are five people who will definitely be killed unless you, a bystander, flip a switch which will divert it on to another track, where it will kill one person. Should you flip the switch?

  3. 3. The runaway trolley car is hurtling down a track where it will kill five people. You are standing on a bridge above the track and, aware of the imminent disaster, you decide to jump on the track to block the trolley car. Although you will die, the five people will be saved. Just before your leap, you realise that you are too light to stop the trolley. Next to you, a fat man is standing on the very edge of the bridge. He would certainly block the trolley, although he would undoubtedly die from the impact. A small nudge and he would fall right onto the track below. No one would ever know. Should you push him?

You will be surprised what people's replies were...read them in this link:

Many people would save 5 while killing innocent 1. But I think Islam wouldnt allow that. What are your views.

I couldnt include the 4th poll option. Here it is:

An enormous rock falls and blocks the exit of a cave you and five other tourists have been exploring. Fortunately, you spot a hole elsewhere and decide to let "Big Jack" out first. But Big Jack, a man of generous proportions, gets stuck in the hole. He cannot be moved and there is no other way out.

The high tide is rising and, unless you get out soon, everyone but Big Jack (whose head is sticking out of the cave) will inevitably drown. Searching through your backpack, you find a stick of dynamite. It will not move the rock, but will certainly blast Big Jack out of the hole. Big Jack, anticipating your thoughts, pleads for his life. He does not want to die, but neither do you and your four companions. Should you blast Big Jack out?

If the roles were reversed, what would you advise your trapped companions to do?

Should you blast Big Jack out?

Yes

No

Salaam,

Ignoring that some lives probably are more valuable than others (for example, the life of a doctor who has just discovered a cure for cancer is undoubtably more precious than mine) then if you do nothing you are as guilty as if you had flipped the switch. In all these scenarios the lives are presented as being of equal value (ie: no extenuating circumstances). If by acting you save more lives than by not acting then you should act because not acting is as much of an active choice as to not act. To me, therefore, if we assume all lives have the same value you shoudl always do the action which saves the most whether this is active or passive action.

I believe in Islam is is possible to take a live to save a life in some circumstance. I was watching a programme about a girl born in Egypt who had a half-bodied twin attatched by the head. The half-bodied twin had a fully developed brain but no other organs at all. The hospital sought religious advice before looking into whether they could separate them and the advice was that it was permissable because the half-bodied twin was slowing killing the whole-bodied twin.

Peace and Love,

DARLA

Excellent post darla, I was thinking the same thing about inaction being a form of action. All we can go on are numbers of lives really, escpically since we know nothing about the people.

The one about dragging a man off the bridge is more complicated because you are actively killing someone else. It was a personal decision to sacrifice yourself for others but you are not entitled to make the decision to sacrifice anothers life, even if you would in their position.

Yes to the firt Q. because you can save someones life and no to the rest. I could not take an other persons life nomatter what the motives are (except in selfdefence). And let big jack live, that is how the situation turned out to be and just have sabr and trust in Allah.

My answer aswell, just pray to Allah :D , never give up (in reality there would be more options if you are calm).

Salaams

IMO, the Questions were very simple because it's all about choosing lesser of the two evils.

It would be more difficult though if there were more details as to the age, personality of the people bcaz then it would be more qualatative and subjective.

In any case..ALL DIE :D

Just kidding ofcource :D

Believe it or not the example given in this situation...

An enormous rock falls and blocks the exit of a cave you and five other tourists have been exploring. Fortunately, you spot a hole elsewhere and decide to let "Big Jack" out first. But Big Jack, a man of generous proportions, gets stuck in the hole. He cannot be moved and there is no other way out.
...has actually happened.

And note that others in the real life situation were supportive and didnt think of blowing up anyone.

excerpt from the story...

An overweight woman who got stuck in a South African cave trapped 22 fellow tourists for more than 10 hours and had to be prised free with liquid paraffin.
