EWB Birmingham are launching its first ever summer placement in association with Islamic Relief (IR).

IR are looking for 1-2 students to undertake office-based research in their Birmingham office. The placement will focus mainly on water and sanitation and will be used to further the field work of IR. Possible tasks include researching country specific information about water or sanitation issues, collating previous field work done by IR and other NGOs or outlining protocols for community mobilisation for sanitation projects. The interests of applicants will be taken into consideration when finalising study areas.

IR is an international relief and development charity, which aims to alleviate the suffering of the world’s poorest people. It is an independent Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) founded in the UK in 1984 by Dr Hany El Banna.

As well as responding to disasters and emergencies, IR promotes sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities - regardless of race, religion or gender.

The nature of the placement is flexible and could be carried out on a full or part time basis, between 6-12 weeks over the summer vacation. It is voluntary and students will therefore need to arrange their own accomodation.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with limited experience to gain first-hand knowledge of working for an international NGO. Transferable skills, such as report writing, giving presentations & working as part of a team, will be developed. This placement will also provide a good springboard to those wishing to pursue a career in development.

To find out more about the work of IR go to www.islamic-relief.com. For further information about the project email ewb[at]bugs.bham.ac.uk.

Applications can be made via an online form. The closing date for applications will be Friday, May 26th. Applicants should be available for interviews the week starting the 29th of May.

Get thinking about your application now! - the deadline is fast approaching.
