Laila Gordy, a fourth-year economics student who was present in the library during the incident, said police officers threatened to shoot her with a Taser when she asked an officer for his name and his badge number.

I'll bet the next time someone asks for his ID card and he doesn't produce it that he leaves the computer room when they ask.

By the way, why does he start going off on the Patriot Act? I'm no fan of the Patriot Act either, but this incident had absolutely nothing to do with it. He might as well have been yelling about how bad American Idol is and that this is what it has led to.

Hello!

This is my first post here. I find this site to be quite interesting.

As to the "student":

#1 The rule is that anyone who is in the library after 11 o'clock at night MUST have a student identification card (id). Rather simple don't you think? Just like at the airport - open your baggage and you can board the plane. If you refuse - you have a big problem.

#2 After being asked repeatedly to do so, the "student" REFUSED to show any id, AND refused to leave the library, after being asked to leave many, many times.

So the campus police were called.

#3 The "student", when being escorted out of the library, went limp, which means that he was resisting his removal from a place where he was not authorized to be. (yeah I know, prepositions)

No id? Get out! Simple. Follow the rules - abide by the rules.

This is a matter of the safety of the legitimate students, not the right of some clown with no id to break the rules.

After 11 o'clock at night the library is for students and students only. That is the rule. This guy could not prove that he was a student, therefore he had to leave.

This forum has rules.

What would happen if I violated those rules?

I would be banned. Correct?

Banned; same-same Tasered........in a sense.

A question for pondering; what do you think would happen if this clown tried the same stunt in a bar? I cringe at the thought.

By the way, this is no kid; he's 23 years old!

He should have known better.

In other words - he asked for it - he got it.

It's too bad. Since he had no student id he should have acknowledged that he was wrong and just left the building because he knew that he no right to be there.

He didn't though, did he?

Greetings tantum_verum.

You said:

Really?

That was probably according to UCPD Assistant Chief of Police Jeff Young. Therefore its most likely biased.

Now look at this taken from (www.)"you can't post links until you reach 50 posts_rawstory(contact admin if its a beneficial link)/showoutarticle.php?src=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailybruin(contact admin if its a beneficial link)%2Fnews%2Farticles.asp%3Fid%3D38960"]rawstory(contact admin if its a beneficial link)[/url]

As Tabatabainejad was being dragged through the room by two officers, he repeated in a strained scream, "I'm not fighting you" and "I said I would leave."

Neither the video footage nor eyewitness accounts of the events confirmed that Tabatabainejad encouraged resistance, and he repeatedly told the officers he was not fighting and would leave.

like every one else here; your entitled to your opinion.

But kindly provide the source of your information.

The video showed one officer responding to a student by threatening that the student would "get Tased too." At this point, the officer was still holding a Taser.

:D

Just who do these jerks think they are?

Hello again and to ~mehnaz~, greetings. I hope you are well.

In answer to your question as to the source of my information, after recalling my "history" I found that I viewed 19 different websites including The Daily Bruin - after going through 10 pages on Google. Most were the same old thing. They were in horror of someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time being asked to leave.

This entire encounter did not and could not have occured in a moments time. It began when the student could not provide a Bruin card. Therefore he was asked to leave the library. He did not leave. He was asked again and again and he still refused to leave. Then the police were called and they arrived in whatever time it took them because they were out doing their job of protecting the students on the campus. So now, after 10, 15, 20, 30, minutes or more of time they arrive and the guy with no id who does not belong in the library is still there.

He deserved to be thrown out on his ear. But they didn't throw him out, they escorted him and while escorting him they put their hands on his arm because they had no idea who he was or what he was capable of doing. That's when he freaked out and started yelling and creating a scene of much greater magnitude than that which he had already created.

His arrogance created this problem.

By the way, when I was 23 years old I had already purchased my first house and had my first baby on the way.

This silly 23 year old "man" acted like a spoiled child. His unmitigated arrogance was the cause of this problem and nothing else.

Like I said, you ask for it - you got it.

Have a good one...........

" Muslim, Iranian-American, Mostafa Tabatabainejad, UCLA student was tasered several times by UCLA'S UCPD November 14th 2006, because he could not show his Student ID. He was shot 5 times with a taser gun. Police threatened to shoot students who got too close. The Student yelled out that he had a medical condition, but the cops kept shooting. UCPD officers shot a student several times with a Taser inside the Powell Library CLICC computer lab late Tuesday night before taking him into custody."

"It was the most disgusting and vile act I had ever seen in my life," said David Remesnitsky, a 2006 UCLA alumnus who witnessed the incident.

Peace tantum,

This silly 23 year old "man" acted like a spoiled child. His unmitigated arrogance was the cause of this problem and nothing else.

The issue is not that this man was behaving irrationally, the issue is that poking him with a tazer was completely out of proportion to his crime of forgetting his library ID card. The officer responsible for this is an imbecile and should have his badge removed.

Howcome I don't see any mainstrem media covering this human rights issue?

ISNA - Tehran

Service: Foreign Policy

TEHRAN, Nov. 18 (ISNA)-Iran's foreign ministry spokesman condemned the brutal assault of U.S. police forces against an Iranian student.

"Treading on the right of a social, religious or foreign minority is an old story in the U.S.," said Mohammad Ali Husseini.

"Increasing violence directed towards foreign migrates, racism and violation of human rights in the U.S. has constantly been condemned," he added while recognizing the use of brutal excessive force against this student as a sign that proved U.S. police forces racist approach towards foreign students and migrates.

This official also stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran was serious about such issues and was prepared to take all necessary steps for reclaiming the abused rights of its citizens

Because, honestly, it is not that big of a deal.

True, it should not happen and the men involved will hopefully be punished and removed from any position of authority that they have, but the student was not permanently harmed in any way. He was tazed, not beaten or shot.

Heck, if the student had not been Iranian it would not even make mention on these forums.

Hi Livius,

It might not be a big deal for you livius, but for others it is.

Being Tazed has its own effect, right, or else why would they taze him, nobody likes being stunned, the after effects may not be the same as being beaten up or shot, because tazing works more on the nerves, from what I know, never the less it has its own bad effect.

If the student was not an Iranian, or of a Muslim decent, it would not make mention on this forum, because, the incident most probably would not have happened, hence it would not be in the news, so how could it be on any forum.

Really think about it, that's how it is unfortunately these days, I am not putting the blame on the Police or anyone, but Muslims have been put on the negative spotlight so much, that even if we sneeze in a public place, we would be scared it would cause commotion (this is what my Italian neighbour was saying, not me).

Take care, umAhmad.

PEACE

Islamic Republic of Iran was serious about such issues and was prepared to take all necessary steps for reclaiming the abused rights of its citizens

WHAT HYPOCRISY!!! Iran is one of the most opressive countries on earth. They should treat their own citisens with dignity and respect in their own country before commenting on other countries.

On 15 August, 2004, Atefah Sahaaleh was hanged in a public square in the Iranian city of Neka.

Her death sentence was imposed for "crimes against chastity".

The state-run newspaper accused her of adultery and described her as 22 years old.

But she was not married - and she was just 16.

In terms of the number of people executed by the state in 2004, Iran is estimated to be second only to China.

And to get back on the topic at hand, the police used excessive force. They should get punished.

Peace

And what is your evidence to back this up? This victim mentality is far too rampant and is tiresome. Even the guy in the video was trying to blame this on the Patriot Act, which is a joke.

The guy was not tazed because he was Iranian. The guy was tazed because he refused to do what was asked of him and was throwing a fit. It was excessive, but there is absolutely no reason to believe this was any anti-Muslim incident. This was an act of ignorant security guys with delusions of power, not an attack on Islam or Muslims.

Yes, it causes pain and temporary paralysis among other things. It did not even require a hospital visit, yet someone wants to know why this is not being covered by national media. The incident, although unfortunate and excessive, simply does not warrant national media attention.

ok, this did happen because of the Patriot Act. Anyone who is blind enough not to see that, well, who cares anyways about them.

The student was harrassed after he complied to leave the library. There was no need to use a taser on one guy when he was surrounded by 2-3 policemen. I take Taikwando. According to my sensei, one guy will have trouble defending himself again 3 other men even after learning Taikwando. So, the taser was completely unnecessary.

Now, obviously, many people will be too chicken to admit that. They will thus turn a blind eye and start blaming the student for not co-operating. Well, that's just too sissy of an attitude.

oh, tantum_verum, you posted that at 23, I would have a house and a baby. WELL OPEN YOUR EYES. Everyone doesn't live the same life here. People go through different circumstances in this life. Just because the guy is 23 and studying, doesn't make him a loser or something. He might turn out way way better than you. SO CHILLL AND GET A LIFE OK.

I so hope and pray that Allah brings these cops to justice InshaAllah.

Take care

Assalam-u-Alaikum
