The Function Of Mountains

Recommended Posts

The Qur'an draws attention to a very important geological function of mountains.

"We placed firmly embedded mountains on the earth, so it would not move under them…" (The Qur'an, 21:31)

As we have noticed, it is stated in the verse that mountains have the function of preventing shocks in the Earth.

This fact was not known by anyone at the time the Qur'an was revealed. It was in fact brought to light only recently as a result of the findings of modern geology.

According to these findings, mountains emerge as a result of the movements and collisions of massive plates forming the Earth's crust. When two plates collide, the stronger one slides under the other, the one on the top bends and forms heights and mountains. The layer beneath proceeds under the ground and makes a deep extension downward. That means that mountains have a portion stretching downwards, as large as their visible parts on the Earth.

In a scientific text, the structure of mountains is described as follows:

Where continents are thicker, as in mountain ranges, the crust sinks deeper into the mantle. (General Science, Carolyn Sheets, Robert Gardner, Samuel F. Howe; Allyn and Bacon Inc. Newton, Massachusetts, 1985, s. 305)

In a verse, this role of the mountains is pointed out by a comparison with "pegs":

"Have We not made the earth as a bed and the mountains its pegs?" (The Qur'an, 78:6-7)

Mountains, in other words, clench the plates in the Earth's crust together by extending above and beneath the Earth's surface at the conjunction points of these plates. In this way, they fix the Earth's crust, and prevent it from drifting over the magma stratum or among its plates. Briefly, we may liken mountains to nails that keep pieces of wood together.

This fixing function of the mountains is described in scientific literature by the term "isostasy". Isostasy means the following:

Isostasy: general equilibrium in the Earth's crust maintained by a yielding flow of rock material beneath the surface under gravitational stress. (Webster's New Twentieth Century Dictionary, 2. edition "Isostasy", New York, s. 975)

This vital role of mountains, that was discovered by modern geology and seismic research, was revealed in the Qur'an centuries ago as an example of the supreme wisdom in God's creation.

"We placed firmly embedded mountains on the earth, so it would not move under them..." (The Qur'an, 21:31)

Yet more nonsense from the font of ignorance that is Harun Yahya :D

Mountains are not pegs , they don't stop tectonic plates from moving and they certainly don't stop shocks. In fact the plate collisions that form mountains ranges mean most are in tectonically active regions and so have more earthquakes/volcanoes than non mountainous areas .

Also Isostasy has nothing to do with this imagined function of mountains and is only thrown into the article to make it appear more scientific . :D

:sl: / Peace to all,

Kindly refer and read every line from the original post before you state your opinion.

The 'peg' is not a made-up story by Harun Yahya in your claim that he is trying to make his article more scientific.

It was used in the Holy Quran, verses which was revealed down by Allaah the al Mighty to His Messenger SAW.

The article posted clearly has given you ALL the references of the verses.

... Also Isostasy has nothing to do ...

Hundreds years ago people did think(ing) wishfully that sun revolving around the earth instead of what mentioned in alQur-an.

If mountains are pegs that hold tectonic pates together (which is not what the Koran says - I am disagreeing with this poster, not the Koran), they are not doing a very good job. The hypothesis currently accepted by almost all (I only say "almost" out of caution - AFAIK it's reall "all") scientists qualified in relavent fields is that the contintents roam about the earth's surface. The evidence shows that a map of the world looked very different in the past and will look very different in the futire. I think (I'll check) that actual measurements of the Americas and Africa moving apart has been done.

Seceondly, the current hypothesis accepted by almost all (see above) scientists qualified in the relavent fields is that colliding tectonic plate are one of the major causes of mountains. The Himalayas are relatively young mountains and are still growing because they are at the edge of two colliding plates. If they were acting as pegs those plates presumably would not be colliding.

This vital role of mountains, that was discovered by modern geology and seismic research, was revealed in the Qur'an centuries ago as an example of the supreme wisdom in God's creation.

It is not true to say that "modern geology and seismic research" has discovered that mountains have the role of pegs. You can think that scientists are wrong if you want, but please do not tell lies about what they say.

Actually, I'm behind the times. Measurement of tectonic plate movements is commonplace. Here's a news story about one mensuration assemblage in the US:

RUSSIAN RIDGE -- At the summit of Rolph Hill, in a corner of the Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve closed to the public, stands an alien-looking machine -- a small white dome balanced on three long "legs" sunk deep into moss-covered bedrock.

Inside is a small, powerful GPS receiver that's measuring the movement of the earth via satellite every 15 seconds and a cellular modem that sends the data hundreds of miles away. Scientists are using it to calculate earthquake hazards across the San Andreas Fault, which lies a few miles to the east.

"My co-worker always says it looks like a droid, like R2-D2," joked Erica Simmons, a planner with the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, as she touched the immaculate white dome that holds the GPS data receiver and antenna.

Three fellow 'droids,' identical in every aspect, have also been installed at key locations on Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District properties, including Rancho San Antonio, Mills Creek and La Honda Creek open space preserves.

They are among 220 Plate Boundary Observatories installed in Northern California and 1,050 such stations across the Western U.S., and together they form a comprehensive picture of the strain and stress occurring deep in the earth as the North American and Pacific tectonic plates grind against each other.

Geophysicists and other earthquake experts, as well as the public, can now access a database with all the information for free thanks to the largesse of the National Science Foundation, which gave EarthScope, a national community of earth scientists, a $220 million grant to begin installing the machines in 2003. The most recent, and final, Plate Boundary Observatory in San Mateo County was added to the La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve last week.
