Your Favorite Verses from the Quran

Recommended Posts

"God is the light of the heavens and the earth. His light may be compared to a niche that enshrines a lamp, the lamp within a crystal of star-like brilliance. It is lit from from a blessed olive tree neither Eastern or Western. Its very oil would almost shine forth, though no fire touched it. Light upon light! God guides to his light whom He will." (Qur'an 24:35)

"By another sign He created for you spouses from among yourselves, that you might live in peace with them, and planted love and kindness in your hearts. Surely there are signs in this for thinking men." (Qur'an 30:21)

"To God belongs the east and the west. Whichever way you turn there is the face of God. He is omnipresent and all-knowing." (Qur'an 2:115)

Salam,

Jesse, here's a test for you, here are a few verses from the Quran (which also include your favorite verse). Which one in your opinion can be considered as the greatest verse and most profound from all the verses in the clip below. No google, just read/listen and see if you can pick it up.

:-)

Edit: In verse 243, for example, in that one verse, perhaps may even worthy of a epic blockbuster, think about a plague that drove people by the thousands to flee, they reached a valley and built a settlement. By one command, Allah caused all of them to die at once. Year later a prophet pbuh (can't remember his name) passed by, invoked Allah and witnessed first hand on how all those dead people raised up and lived. This is a very short edition, a long one would be about an hour long narration by a knowledgeable person, all in that one verse from the Quran..

Well I would have to say 2:255, Allah! La ilaha illa huwa is very prominent, but the whole verse is rather profound. 2:256 is also excellent at showing the tolerance that Islam showed to the other monotheistic faiths under their rule.

Indeed, verse 255 is known as Ayatul Kursi and it is the greatest and most excellent verse in the Quran, congratulation..

Quote:

The reason why Ayat al-Kursi is the most excellent verse, is that this verse mentions the names of Allah Most High more than any other verse (i.e. this verse contains the most remembrance (dhikr) of Allah Most High). For example, some verses of the Quran may mention the names of Allah Most High two times, some may mention the names of Allah Most High four times, and some ten times. But in Ayat al-Kursi, the names of Allah Most High have been mentioned seventeen times. Ayat al-Kursi mentions six attributes (sifat) of Allah Most High, all six being mentioned in this single verse. The attributes mentioned are: the Divine Oneness (Wahdaniyyah) of Allah Most High, His Life (Hayah), His Knowledge (‘Ilm), His Kingdom (Mulk), His Divine Power (Qudrah) and His Will (Iradah).

[sharh Sahih Muslim: Fada’il al-Qur’an, under Surat al-Kahf & Ayat al-Kursi. Allamah Ghulam Rasul Sa‘idi]

Imam Muslim writes that Ubayy bin Ka‘b (Allah be well pleased with him) narrated that one day, the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) asked “O Ubayy! What is the most excellent verse of the Quran?†Ubayy replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.†The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “In your opinion, what is the most excellent verse of the Quran?†Ubayy bin Ka‘b replied, “Allah – There is no god but Heâ€(i.e. Ayat al-Kursi). The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) placed his hand on his chest and said, “O Ubayy bin Ka‘b! May your knowledge be pleasant for you.â€

[sahih Muslim: Fada’il al-Qur’an, under Surat al-Kahf & Ayat al-Kursi. Imam Muslim]

My mum says that it's Haram to have a favourite verse. You must agree with love all the verses in the Kora equally.

"And if every soul that did wrong had all that is in the earth it would seek to ransom itself therewith; and they will feel remorse within them when they will see the doom. And they will be judged with fairly and they will not be wronged."

Surah 10:54

The great truth revealed in this verse is that we all are powerless to save ourselves and are in desperate need of God.

I believe that the following verse 2:256 is too often quoted wrongly out of context. I believe that 2:256 must be read as a couplet with 2:257

[2.256] There is no compulsion in religion; truly the right way has become clearly distinct from error; therefore, whoever disbelieves in the Shaitan and believes in Allah he indeed has laid hold on the firmest handle, which shall not break off, and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

[2.257] Allah is the guardian of those who believe. He brings them out of the darkness into the light; and (as to) those who disbelieve, their guardians are Shaitans who take them out of the light into the darkness; they are the inmates of the fire, in it they shall abide.[using large font size is not allowed]

Using the phrase, "There is no compulsion in religion" is out of context and misleading, because the rest of the verse implies that the right way is clear and distinct i.e., to believe in Allah because that handle will not break off. The other choice is that with Shaitan who will lead you from the light unto darkness and to live in Hell-fires. It is certainly the choice of Allah or Shaitan?

Why do so many people use that phrase out of context and in error? It is misleading.

"Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinns and men) deny?"

Repeated a number of times in Surah Ar-Rahman, for me the message behind this ayat is simple and beautiful. Everything that we have - both in this world and the next - is because of Allah.

BE GRATEFUL!
