Muslim (men) Going To A Mixed Gym?

Recommended Posts

Would it be considered "haram" for males to go to a mixed gym?

I've been bringing this issue up with my parents many times trying to talk to them and telling them that if it is the interactions between the two genders they do not like, then they are not being realistic because such interactions happen on a daily basis. Most of the time the discussion ends with them telling me i'm being a disrespectful child by arguing back..so i have never received a clear answer except that of what my parents say. Any input guys?

Salam alaikum

If anyone have guts to lower their gaze when going to mixed gym, then I don't see any problem.

Allah said in The Quran:

[24.30] Say to the believers they should lower their gaze and guard their private parts that is purer for them. Allah is Aware of the things they do.

The types of cloths both genders wear in gym sometime is not ideal, it is likely that it will provoke sexual desires in opposite gender. However, living in western countries this is what you will get to see.

Alternative it would be better to start building your own gym in garage(or room), my brother bought enough equipments to do gym at home and it is cheap aswell in long term.

Anyway in regards to whether going to gym is haram or not, it depends on how a person feels in gym, if their is fitnah, then I would recommend a person should build his/her own gym at home.

This is not fatwah :sl: , just my opinion. In the end, it is upto individual to make choice.

No scholar will ever allow attending a mixed Gym!!

There is a big difference between being in a place that halal and haram mix out of necessity and being willingly at a place that is all haram and can be avoided easily.

Wallahu A'lam

Some things related:

Praise be to Allaah.

Allaah has enjoined the Muslim to protect his physical faculties from doing haraam actions. This guarding the physical faculties comes under the heading of gratitude for the great blessings that Allaah has bestowed upon His slaves. Allaah has warned of a stern punishment for using these blessings in sinful actions. Among the most important of these physical faculties are hearing and sight. They are the two ways to ruin the heart (spiritually), do immoral actions and commit major sins that may doom one to Hell. Allaah has told us that He will ask us about that on the Day when we meet Him. He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, the hearing, and the sight, and the heart of each of those ones will be questioned (by Allaah)â€

[al-Isra’ 17:36].

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The seven physical faculties are the eye, ear, mouth, private part, hand and foot, which may be the cause of doom or the cause of salvation. The one who neglects them and does not protect them will be doomed, and the one who protects them and takes care of them will be saved. So guarding them is the basis of all good, and neglecting them is the basis of all evil. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts)â€

[al-Noor 24:30].

Ighaathat al-Lahfaan (1/80).

The fact that the aayah mentions lowering the gaze and protecting the private part together indicates that lowering the gaze is a means of protecting the private part (or guarding one’s chastity), and that letting the gaze wander freely is a cause of falling into immoral actions.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The zina of the eye is looking, the zina of the tongue is speaking; the soul longs and wishes, and the private part confirms that or denies it.â€

According to a version narrated by Muslim: “The zina of the eyes is looking, the zina of the ears is listening, the zina of the tongue is speaking, the zina of the hands is touching, and the zina of the foot is walking. The heart longs and wishes, and the private part confirms that or denies it.â€

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (6243) and Muslim (2657).

Shaykh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shanqeeti (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Our evidence here is the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), “The zina of the eye is looking.†The fact that the name zina is given to the looking of the eye at that which is not permissible clearly indicates that it is haraam, and is a warning against it. The ahaadeeth which say something similar are many and well known.

It is well known that looking is the cause of zina, because the one who looks a great deal at the beauty of a woman – for example – may develop a strong love for her in his heart as a result of that, which may be the cause of his doom – Allaah forbid – for the gaze is the route to zina.

Adwa’ al-Bayaan (5/510)

Secondly:

What is seen in soap operas, movies and plays of the blatant and wanton display of women (tabarruj), and their soft voices, enticing walks, dancing and singing – all of these are things that are forbidden in the religion of Allaah, and they are among the easiest means that enable the shaytaan to enter and settle in the heart of the viewer, when he can take the reins and direct the person and his physical faculties in ways that incur the wrath of the Lord, may He be exalted.

The hadeeth quoted above, “The zina of the eyes is looking, and the zina of the ear is hearing†undoubtedly applies to these shows.

No one should dispute the bad effects that these soap operas and movies have on societies in general, and on young men and women in particular. An actor may charm a married woman so that she becomes infatuated with him, and she destroys her family by her actions. And young men may become infatuated with beautiful actresses and for that reason they forego halaal marriage in pursuit of haraam pleasure. In addition to that there is the effect that these shows may have of diluting Islamic beliefs, teaching violence, making crime look attractive, making people dare to drink alcohol, keep company with non-mahram women and other bad effects.

See also the answers to questions no. 3633, 3324, 1107 and 13003 for the rulings on watching TV, scientific films and so on.

What we said about haraam viewing may also be said about haraam listening. The songs and music with which the world is filled, with their evil content and promotion of immorality, such as infatuation with non-mahram women and setting up dates with them and feeling sorry when one is away from them, are undoubtedly haraam.

For the prohibition on listening to music, please see the answer to question no. 5000.

From the above it may be known that the ruling on listening to music, and watching movies and soap operas, which are shown on public and private channels, is that it is undoubtedly haraam to broadcast them and it is haraam to watch them or listen to them.

We ask Allaah to set the Muslims’ affairs straight.

And Allaah knows best.

[Q]: Some of the sisters write knowledge-based speech in some of the websites, and they refute some of the writers with regards to their statements. So what is you opinion concerning this?

[A]: I advise every Muslim woman, the Salafee women especially to not delve into this affair. Firstly: Due to what is in it from the wasting of time. Secondly: It exposes her to being the object of ridicule and amusement for the reckless ones and those with diseased hearts. And if she absolutely must do this, then she must suffice with listening to the knowledge-based lessons from those who are known for knowledge, practice of the Religion and excellence. Likewise, there is nothing to prevent her from spreading the statements and fataawaa of the noble Scholars so that her brothers and sisters may benefit from them.

[Q]: What are the general rules for sisters speaking with brothers, or vice-versa on the internet?

[A]: Where were you from our answer?! We advise with the abandonment of this affair! This affair of discussions, mutual exchanges, perceptions and sensations as I have mentioned previously. Secondly, and this is what I add as an answer to your question, I say that many of those who have diseased hearts enter into the programmes of women with the names of women: Umm so and so!! Umm so and so!! Indeed, he names himself with the name of a woman! And their intended purpose is to enjoyment through harming the Muslim women.

Shaykh `Ubayd al-Jaabiree

Translated by Maaz Qureshi

O ye wives of the Prophet! Whosoever of you committeth manifest lewdness, the punishment for her will be doubled, and that is easy for Allah. (30) And whosoever of you is submissive unto Allah and His messenger and doeth right, We shall give her reward twice over, and We have prepared for her a rich provision. (31) O ye wives of the Prophet! Ye are not like any other women. If ye keep your duty (to Allah), then be not soft of speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease aspire (to you), but utter customary speech. (32) And stay in your houses. Bedizen not yourselves with the bedizenment of the Time of Ignorance. Be regular in prayer, and pay the poor-due, and obey Allah and His messenger. Allah's wish is but to remove uncleanness far from you, O Folk of the Household, and cleanse you with a thorough cleansing. (33) And bear in mind that which is recited in your houses of the revelations of Allah and wisdom. Lo! Allah is Subtile, Aware. (34) Lo! men who surrender unto Allah, and women who surrender, and men who believe and women who believe, and men who obey and women who obey, and men who speak the truth and women who speak the truth, and men who persevere (in righteousness) and women who persevere, and men who are humble and women who are humble, and men who give alms and women who give alms, and men who fast and women who fast, and men who guard their modesty and women who guard (their modesty), and men who remember Allah much and women who remember - Allah hath prepared for them forgiveness and a vast reward. My respected sister,

the brother need to have wisdom and find the right approach while explaning the matter to his parents. However, as I know how most children deal with their parents these days in such matters, I suggest that he finds someone that his parents respect and with knowledge and let him explain the matter to them while he just listens to it.

The answer to this seems clear to me but then, I am 68 years old and have had much experience in the ways of the world.

Something which seems to never be mentioned is the state of maturity of the man in question. We are not all the same. Some brothers remain children all their lives. Some attain wisdom early. Look at yourself in a mirror. Which type are you? Am I a man who has control over my base instincts or not? Are all men to be judged as though they are no more than sex starved animals? No. This assumption would be both untrue and unfair.

Brother if you are inclined to see and to think about "sex" when you go to a mixed gym then stay away until you are older and more mature.

Sir, you're lucky you're oldder than I am. It is nto about having perverted thoughts, it is about "we hear and obey."

Salaam

What is the point in going to a gym... waste of money.

Carry your mum and dad up and down the stairs, until they give in and insist that you go to the gym... then say noo! it is haram (figuratively speaking) :sl: .

Gyms are cruising places just like bars and clubs... they are a disgrace to humanity in general.

Have you thought of working out at home? Save the money which you would spend on gym membership and get yourself some equipment...

I work out at home and the gym I go to is officially a mixed gym but I have only ever seen one girl there in six months, so its not really an issue.

Depending on your intention. If you are just there to work out and concentrate on just doing that, I think there's nothing wrong with that. But usually mixed gym is quite open so it's quite hard not to look around. Perhaps what you can do is to go to the gym when not so many people are there. Usually early morning, afternoon. After office hours (depending where you reside) will be too crowded.

Well no one usually goes out with the intention of committing zina, but people still commit zina. It would be better to work out at home.
