BBC Panorama: Muslim Schooling

John Ware is nothing more than an Islamophobe and an Islam basher. To single out Islam as the only religion where such so-called teachings are given proves Ware's own prejudice, bigotry and hatred. The documentary contained many close-up images of hijab-clad girls set to sinister music, as well as slow-motion shots of so-called radical preachers and Muslim men praying in Masjids. The message was that Muslim communities are isolating themselves from mainstream society. It gave the impression that Muslim parents who send their children to faith schools are exercising ‘voluntary apartheid’. We live in a world of many divides. Indeed, it would appear that divides are the norm rather than the exception.

The Panorama show was a confused and sensationalist piece of filmmaking. The Islamic Schools in the documentary were all rated ‘good’ or ‘excellent’, confirmed by their own presenter. To be honest, I didn’t find much weight in their arguments against the schools at all. Anti-Muslims sentiment spread by the media has led to increase violence and discrimination against Muslims in small suburbs and market towns. The attacks on Muslims go largely unnoticed by the media and politicians. Muslim schools protect Muslim children from the onslaught of Euro-Centrism, homosexuality, racism, drinking, drugs, incivility, anti-social behavior, teenage pregnancies and abortions and secular traditions. English is one of the most damaging subjects - reflects secular and immoral beliefs that contradict the view point of Islam. Romeo and Juliet of Shakespeare advocates disobeying parents and premarital relations. Speaking English does not promote integration into British society, and broaden opportunities. The whole world belongs to Muslims. A Muslim is a citizen of this tiny global village. He/she does not want to become notoriously monolingual Brit. He/she must be well versed in Standard English to follow the National Curriculum and go for higher studies and research to serve humanity. At the same time he/she must be well versed in Arabic, Urdu and other community languages to keep in touch with cultural roots and enjoy the beauty of literature and poetry.

No one is advocating the establishing of Sharia law in a non-Muslim country. But Muslims like Jewish people should be able to have their own inheritance laws, religious weddings and divorces according to their own beliefs. It was Muslims in their own lands who first allowed non Muslims to be able to practice their own laws and this was enshrined in Islamic law nearly 1400 years ago. It was Muslims who gave shelter to the Jews when they were thrown out of Europe during the inquisition and during pogroms. Muslims never burnt people alive or tortured them for their beliefs. Islam is not associated with denial of human rights - actually historically Islam provided documentation for human rights. It is absurd to believe that Muslim schools, Imams and Masajid teach Muslim children anti-Semitic, homophobic and anti-western views. It is dangerously deceptive and misleading to address text books and discuss them out of their historical, cultural and linguistic context. Muslims were already disproportionately being targeted by police with programmes such as the Prevent project. Focusing on Muslim schools for investigation would tell Muslim young people "you are different" and further alienate them. Singling out Muslim schools threatened to add to already "dangerous" levels of Islamophobia, which he compared to the amount of anti-Semitism in the 1920s and 1930s.

It is not wrong to teach children that anti-social behaviour, drinking, drugs, homosexuality, sex before marriage, teenage pregnancies and abortions are western values and Islam is against all such sins. This does not mean that Muslim schools teach children to hate westerners, Jews and homosexuals. Extremism, homophobia and anti-Semitism are nothing to do with Islamic teachings and beliefs. Islam does not teach that Jews and Christians are pigs and monkeys. The government, Panorama and the Policy Exchange think-tank should concentrate on institutionally racist schooling and chicken racist teachers, the rising levels of attacks on teachers and the bullying of children; also the fact that society has rising levels of teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease and anti-social behavior. British education system does not take into account a child’s ethnicity, language, culture and faith. A child’s identity and heritage are core to who they are. It is precisely for these reasons that Muslims seek to encourage their children to go to Muslim schools and learn Islamic values and develop cultural, linguistic and spiritual identities, so that they can be decent, productive people, who have respect and care for others.

If it's any help the people who object most to Islamic schools also object to the other faith schools.

If you want your children to be taught the ideas of your religion why can you not do this on a "Sunday school" basis, or other day. You have the power of the the all migthy creator of the universe behind you surely that will transmitt the message better than the secular school.

We live in the country we live in. The idea that a nation can function easily with lots of seperate cultures within it is foolish. I do not want moslems to be identified as different and end up being persicuted like the jews in Nazi Germany.

It is a common saying that British schooling is upholding British values of integration, respect, tolerance and equality. But all minority groups find British schooling is the home of institutional racism and British teachers are chicken racist. This is one of the manny reason why they would like to see their children attending their own schools with their own teachers. Muslim community started setting up school in the 80s and I set up the first Muslim school in 1981 and now there are 166 Muslim schools and only 11 are state funded. Sikh and Hindu communities have set up their own schools. Now Black community is thinking of setting up schools with their own teachers.

A growing number of British-born Muslims and especially Pakistanis are suffering from psychological problems and apathy and are either turning to crime or radical Islam. Majority of British Muslims are from Pakistan.

^ Why did Pakistani people come to Britian?

Was it for the ecconomic opportunities offered by the industrial, scientific, secular state of the United Kingdom.

The schooling of the next generation of scientists, engineers and accountants will not happen in any Islamic setting. All of them disagree with the Koran.

Why do you want your children to grow up with a second class education unable to take full advantage of the opportunities of their talents?

Surely you can with the aid of the all powerful master of the universe teach the fantastic message of the Koran on Saturday and Sunday. If it does not work maybe it's wrong.......?

Iftikhar,

Some of the points you raised are valid however you cannot deny that some people do preach hatred against the West. Not all but some.

No one is advocating the establishing of Sharia law in a non-Muslim country. But Muslims like Jewish people should be able to have their own inheritance laws, religious weddings and divorces according to their own beliefs.

If Muslims want special legislation to cover their religious and cultural needs then that does mean that they want some sort of Sharia based laws. It does not necessarily mean they want Brits to live like Saudis.

Muslim nations should also work on their religious and social freedoms. Islam may in part [in my view] stand up for human rights, however many of the Muslim majority nations of this world are lead by oppressive regimes and are some of the worst human rights violators. Intolerance and human rights violations are world-wide problems.

It is not wrong to teach children that anti-social behaviour, drinking, drugs, homosexuality, sex before marriage, teenage pregnancies and abortions are western values and Islam is against all such sins.

The West has problems just like the Islamic world. If not we would not hear of honour killings; attacks, persecutions and limited religious freedoms for minorities; corruption; drug use in Iran and Afghanistan; sexual abuse of women and children; domestic violence; and prostitution in the UAE (out in the open!). Do you seriously think British parents rejoice at the news that their fourteen year old is pregnant? The West is more tolerant of such behaviours but we can't say people are encouraged in text books to do drugs and get knocked up. God gave us free will however some choose to abuse it but the West is less judgemental and does not carry flogging or imprisonment for sex or pregnancy outside of wedlock. The Western value is free will. Do you think if the strict environments in Muslim nations were non-existent that these same problems would not present themselves?

All of these are not strictly ‘Western values’ which is why they occur in Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist (Thailand comes to mind) societies as well. There are conservative communities within in the West as well. You are generalising.

It is absurd to believe that Muslim schools, Imams and Masajid teach Muslim children anti-Semitic, homophobic and anti-western views. It is dangerously deceptive and misleading to address text books and discuss them out of their historical, cultural and linguistic context.

I had previously read about the Saudi text books prior to watching the programme and I am absolutely appalled! Yes, there is context there, however some Muslims would argue that everything in the Quran is beyond historical and cultural context. Your comment is not realistic. I will agree that the majority of Muslims may not espouse anti-Semetic and anti-Western views, however if the Saudi text-books which teach hatred towards Jews and gays are being used in some educational institutions then there are SOME who are teaching these things. If Islamic law or the Bible says that the punishment for gay sex is jail time or death then THAT IS clearly homophobic. There are SOME radical clerics and that cannot be denied.

If Western values are so appalling and negative for Muslims then they can leave the West. No one forces them to stay if they were born there nor does anyone force them to immigrate to the West or seek refuge there when there are Muslim majority nations which Muslims may feel bear more agreeable environments than the West. Western societies should not open their boarders and then treat immigrants with intolerance and xenophobia.

Panorama should also do shows about other religious schools or soceities which promote intolerance. They did do a piece about Scientology the weekend before so they are 'spreading the love' so to speak.
