Islam And The 21st Century

Recommended Posts

Very good lecture which discusses:

-Islam and science

- The concept of God

- The misconception of jihad.

It also has a question session at the end.

I started watching and have a question that maybe the forum members can clarify.

According to Dr Zakir Naik Qur'an 79 says that the earth is egg shaped. I did some reading and it seems that most translations of the Arabic translate to the earth being "spread out".

Are there any Arabic experts that can shed any light on this?

Strictly speaking the earth is neither egg shaped (prolate spheroid) or "round" (spherical) but is in fact and oblate spheroid (a "squashed" sphere.)

Oh dear, in the next example he gives appears to be to a plain and simple lie:

- He says according to Qur'an 25:61 the moon's light is borrow or reflected.

I checked 4 different translations and none contain any such wording.

Excuse the pun but can anyone "shed any light" on this?

Bismillah ArRahman ArRahim.

I'll try to answer. I have no knowledge of your previous question regarding the 'egg-shaped' earth but I'm quite positive that in Qur'an 25:61, the 'moon's light' does indeed mean 'reflected light'.

Which 4 different translations of the Qur'an did you refer to?

I've found very good explanation here:

Dr Zakir Naik is pretty good.

Incidentally, has anyone heard/listened to his son Fariq Naik, he's pretty good too!
