Evolution And The Big Bang

Recommended Posts

I'm fairly new to Islam but I believe in the evolution of man and that the big bang started the universe. However, I still believe in Allah (swt.) I do not believe that these things happened by chance. I'm wondering if one could be a Muslim and still believe in these two things.

As-salamu alaikum

The evolution of man goes against Islamic teachings according to which Adam (pbuh) was created from clay and his wife was created from him. That's if you mean macro-evolution where man was evolved from another species. However, microevolution of man is acceptable. As for the Big Bang, it would not go against Islam.

Asalaamu Alaikum,

I'd post some really good links for you to read, but I don't have 50 posts yet.

The best thing I can say is; there's no problem in believing in Evolution, in such things as animals and plants etc. However, when it comes to evolution of mankind, in regards that man came from a sub-human or ape-like creature, then this is certainly contradictory to Islam.

We do not believe that Adam(pbuh) had a father or descended from anyone.

I don't think it's a problem however, if one was to believe that Sub Human-like creatures lived before, during or after the time of Adam(pbuh). However, Adam(pbuh) has no relation to any of them and we are all descendants of Adam(pbuh).

As for the Big bang, there's no issues if you want to believe in that. Some people have asserted that the Quran talks about the big bang here -

“Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?†(Quran 21:30)

Allah knows best.

Regarding the expansion of the Universe, this is something which is pretty established;

A correct translation on the expansion of the Universe in the Quran -

( Qur'an 51:47 )

Shabbir Ahmed Translation – "And it is We Who have built the
Universe
, and behold,
We are steadily expanding it.
"

Dr. Munir Munshey Translation – "With Our power and prowess, We brought into being the
universe
. And indeed,
We expand it (steadily)!
"

Progressive Muslims Translation – "And We constructed the
universe
using matter, and
We will expand it.
"

Muhammad Asad Translation – "AND IT IS We who have built the
universe
with [Our creative] power; and, verily, it is
We who are steadily expanding it."

Arberry Translation – "And
heaven
— We built it with might, and
We extend it wide.
"

Sarwar Translation – "We have made the
heavens
with Our own hands and
We expanded it.
"

Khalifah Translation – "We constructed the
sky
with our hands, and
we will continue to expand it.
"

Hilali/Khan Translation – "With power did We construct the
heaven
. Verily,
We are Able to extend the vastness of space thereof.
"

Umm Muhammad (Sahih International) Translation – "And the
heaven
We constructed with strength, and indeed,
We are [its] expander.
"

Muhammad Ahmed & Samira Translation – "And the
sky/space
We built/constructed it with power/support, and
We are extending/spreading.
"

Qaribullah Translation – "We built the
heaven
with might, and
We widely extended it
."

Ali Quli Qara'i Translation – "We have built the
sky
with might, and indeed it is
We who are its expanders.
"

Ali Unal Translation – "And the
heaven
, We have constructed it mightily, and it is surely We Who have vast power, and
keep expanding it
."

Bijan Moeinian Translation – "I (God) have created the
universe
myself and
will continue to expand
it."

Hamid S. Aziz Translation – "And the
heaven
, We raised it high with power, and it is We that
expand the vastness of space (or We are the expanders of it).
"

Muhammad Mahmoud Ghali Translation – "And the
heaven
(is also a sign). We have built it with (Our) Hands (i.e., Capability) and surely
We are indeed extending (it) wide
."

Muhammad Taqi Usmani Translation – "And the
sky
was built by Us with might; and indeed
We are the expanders
."

Tahir al-Qadri Translation – "And We built the
heavenly universe
with great might. And surely
We are expanding (this universe) more and more
."

T. B. Irving Translation – "The
sky
We have built firmly and
We are extending it.
"

All translators translate it like that today.

This discover was made in 1929 -

In 1929, Edwin Hubble, an astronomer at Caltech, made a critical discovery that soon led to scientific answers for these questions: he discovered that the universe is expanding.

Here is a translation of that verse from a non Muslim in 1861 -

Arthur John Arberry

47. And heaven -- We built it with might, and We extend it wide

Lets go even further, and this is what Ibn Abbas(ra) 618–619 CE, states -

(We have built) created (the heaven with might, and We it is who make the vast extent (thereof)) as We will; it is also said that this means: we expand the provision thereof.
