Female Prophets

Do Muslims recognise the female prophets of the Bible, including Miriam, Sarah, Esther and Deborah?

Are there other female prophets in Islam, other than those of the Bible?

Hello miss jupiter

I didn't think the Christians or Jews believe in female prophets...

To answer your question, Muslims do not believe in any female Prophets. I dont know if you want me to expand on my answer or just wanted to know what we believe so Ill wait for your reply.

And you can answer these questions for me, do you know where it says in the bible that there were women Prophets? if so, how do you understand the word Prophet, what exactly does it mean in Christianity? What is the word used in the original language [obv in disputes we should refer to the originals to reconcile]?

Hello Abu-Yusef,

We do believe in female prophets! Some of them are:

Why don't Muslims believe in the female prophets? Please do expand on your answer. I thought Muslims believe in all the Prophets of the Bible. Doesn't denying prophets constitute kufr in Islam?

There's a difference of opinion amongst scholars, however most suggest that there weren't any female prophets. Those that did, said;

For example, Imam Al-Qurtubi, in his famous commentary, explained that in principle there is nothing against sending female prophets, similar to sending male prophets. He based his opinion on numerous verses in the Qur’an that mentioned wahi (revelations) sent to women, similar to the same word wahi that was used with revelations sent to men.

Imam Al-Qurtubi cited the following verses from the chapter in the Qur’an named after Maryam (Mary, the mother of Jesus) to support his opinion and which means:

*{And mention Maryam in the Book when she drew aside from her family to an eastern place; So she took a veil [to screen herself] from them; then We sent to her Our spirit, and there appeared to her a well-made man. She said: Surely I fly for refuge from you to the Beneficent Allah, if you are one guarding (against evil). He said: I am only a messenger of your Lord: That I will give you a pure boy}* (Maryam 19:16-19).

However, according to Imam Al-Qurtubi’s sources, he was only for the opinion of Maryam’s prophethood and had not confirmed evidence for the prophethood of any other woman (Al-Qurtubi, Al-Tafseer, vol. 4, p. 83).

Nevertheless, several other scholars included other women in the rank of prophets and discussed differences among scholars regarding that. These women are: Asia (Pharoah’s wife), Hawaa (Eve, Prophet Adam’s wife), Sarah (Prophet Ibrahim’s wife) and Yuhanz (Prophet Moses’ mother). For more details given by scholars who supported this opinion, refer to Imam Al-Razi, the famous commentator of the Qur’an, in his Al-Durr Al-Mukhtaar (vol. 5, p. 441), Imam Al-Suyuti, an authority in the sciences of the Qur’an, in his, Al-Ashbaah Wal-Naza’ir (vol. 1, p. 240), Imam Al-Kamal Ibn Al-Humaam, a principal Hanafi scholar, whose opinion is mentioned in Husn Al-Uswah by Muhammad Siddiq Khan (vol. 1, p. 591), and Imam Al-Mubarkafuri in his Tuhfat Al-Ahwathi (vol. 5, p. 460), who actually cited the same verses from the chapter named “The Prophets” (Al-Anbiyaa’), which you referred to in your question.

As for why there might not be female prophets -

The Prophets in Islam are the most tested of people and go through the most difficulty. For example;

- Abraham(pbuh) had to sacrifice his own son, leave his wife/son in the middle of nowhere (desert) and so on.

- The Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) faced persecution for 13 years, lost his loved one's and many other difficulties.

Many of these prophets were oppressed and persecuted, can you imagine how that would be for a woman? To have to go through all that? I think, based on that it is understandable.

Ok, Muslims believe the torah/bible is corrupt, not sure what your point is.

I'm not sure what you disagree with either, I never said anything about capability, I talked about going through persecution and oppression. Islam is protective of women against harm, which is why some Scholars believe their may not have been female prophets.

However, others believe that there could've, based on the technicality of the meaning of the "Prophet" in Islam.

The concept of prophecy in Islam is broader than Judaism and Christianity since Muslims distinguish between "rasul" (messengers) and "nabi" (prophets). Both are "divinely inspired" recipients of God's revelation. However, messengers are given a message for a community in book form and, unlike prophets, are assured success by God. While all messengers are prophets, not all prophets are messengers (see also Itmam al-hujjah).[1][2][3]Some prophets are held in high esteem and are mentioned by name in the Qur'an. All prophets received wahi (revelation) from God, and the prophets who received a Sharia (divine code of life) ultimately collected together in the form of a holy book are the messengers.

Salaam Brother,

Firstly, JZK for shedding more light on the topic - I withdraw my statement about their being no prophet since there is differences of opinion.

But having said that, i did say it on the fact that the Prophets were people who went through tests, persecution and so on, and had to confront evil tyrants and lead the people. Im sure if today a woman was to stand up alone and confront a tyrant ruler and his system, people would day 'what happen to all the men?'.

This is in no way belittling the status of women, it is out of concern – which my brother implied in his reply. And I think this issue was the driving force of asking the above question. People have the perception that Islaam oppresses women. In regards to this, i would first like to say that just because the Qur`aan may not have mentioned about any women Prophets does not invalidate its authenticity – It can still be from God. It is ultimately up to Him who He wants to send and who not to.

Secondly, if you question was asked because you think Islaam oppresses women, then that is not true. The first martyr in Islaam was a woman [sumayya], women used to be Judges under the Islaamic State, women can be Scholars and teach men their religion [the Prophet [saw] told us to take half of our Religion from one of his wives], whole nations were fought for the sake of ONE Muslim woman... and so on.

And lastly, about it being Kufr to reject the Prophets in the Bible, it might be more clear to put it like this....

We do not believe in any of the Prophets mentioned in the bible, we only believe in the Prophets mentioned to us in the Qur`aan. As a whole, we reject the entire bible. As for the things which agrees with Islaam, we do not believe in them because it says it in the bible – we only accept it because Islaam says it. Which means, we do not need the bible [or anything else] to believe in Isa/Jesus [pbuh] as the Qur`aan is sufficient.

The reason for that point [the last one] is because the bible has doubt about its authenticity... and if we want to discuss this issue, its better to have separate thread – if its not already available [i only just joined recently]

And btw the word for Prophet and Prophetess in Arabic is also Nabi and Nabiyyah,

My point was to give you an opportunity to read the text concerning Debora. It seems as if the Bible is "corrupt" when it is convenient. No one brings that line when they talk about Moses' war.

But having said that, i did say it on the fact that the Prophets were people who went through tests, persecution and so on, and had to confront evil tyrants and lead the people. Im sure if today a woman was to stand up alone and confront a tyrant ruler and his system, people would day 'what happen to all the men?'.

Debora did.

The fourth of the judges who ruled over the Jewish people after the death of Joshua, was not a man, but a woman, one of the most famous of all times, the Prophetess Deborah. Before her were Othniel, Ehud and Shamgar, the latter only for a short time.

After Ehud's death the Jews forsook the ways of the Torah and adopted many of the idols of the people about them. As a consequence G-d delivered them into the hands of the King of Canaan, Jabin, whose royal residence was the city of Hazor. His cruel general Sisera oppressed the Jews for twenty years. Sisera possessed a well-trained army of cavalry. He also bad iron chariots that were the "tanks" of those days. The Jews suffered terribly under the cruel rule of Sisera, and in great despair cried unto G-d.

It was then that G-d sent them Deborah the Prophetess. She was one of the seven women prophetesses whose prophecies are recorded in the Bible.

Deborah lived in the Mountains of Ephraim, between Ramah and Beth-El. In the midst of the sin and idolatry, Deborah remained true to G-d and His Torah. She was wise and G-d fearing, and the people flocked to her for advice and help. Deborah held court beneath a palm-tree, in the open air. There, where everyone could hear her, she warned the Jewish people and urged them to leave their evil ways and return to G-d. The entire Jewish nation respected this great prophetess.

Deborah was the wife of a man whose name was Lapidoth, which means "torches." Our sages tell us, that at the advice of his wife he furnished large wicks and oil for the lights of the sanctuary of Shiloh, which burned like torches. Thus, our Sages say, was the effect of this holy woman on everyone around her: spreading the light of Torah. Similarly our Sages explain that she sat under a palm-tree to show to the world that the Jewish people was all united and turning their eyes again to G-d, like the leaves of the palm turn upward together, towards heaven.

It was fortunate that Deborah had such a tremendous influence. For even the strongest and noblest of the men of those days had given up hope of turning the tide against the Canaanites' oppression and idolatry.

When Deborah felt that she had helped the people to return to G-d, she sent for Barak, the son of Abinoam. Some say he was her husband, and that "Barak," meaning lighting, was another name for "Lapidoth." At any rate, Barak was the most influential man in israel then, and Deborah asked him to raise an army of ten thousand troops from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun, and gather them at the foot of mount Tabor, in the Plains of Esdrealon. With this army he was to attack the Canaanite oppressors.

Barak refused to undertake this task by himself, knowing well that only the help of G-d and the inspiration of the prophetess Deborah could succeed in the hopeless odds against the iron chariots and cavalry of Sisera. Deborah agreed to accompany him, but she warned him that although he would gain victory, the glory would not be his, but a woman's.

Sisera learned of Barak's approach and led his huge army against the Jews. Naturally, the well-trained and armored Canaanite troops had no difficulty at first. They quickly gained the upper hand. But suddenly G-d threw confusion into their ranks. Rains turned the battlefield into mud, and the chariots were stuck. Terrified by the sudden turn of events, the mighty warriors of Sisera fled in all directions. The overjoyed Jewish troops pursued them to the very hometown of Sisera, Charosheth, and not a single soldier of the Canaanites escaped.

When Sisera realized his defeat, he quickly descended from his chariot and fled on foot. Seeking a place to hide, he chanced upon the tent of Heber the Kenite, who was a descendant of Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses. Heber had been on good terms with Jabin, the king of Hazor, the ruler of the Canaanites, and Sisera was only too happy to accept the invitation of Jael, Heber's wife, to bide him in the house until the Jewish army would have passed.

Jael gave him food and drink and, exhausted from the battle, Sisera soon fell into a heavy slumber. Seeing this, the brave Jael decided to make Sisera pay for all the cruelties he had committed against the Jewish people. Cautiously approaching the sleeping warrior, she drove a long nail, a tent-pin, through his temple, thus putting an end to the hated oppressor. In the meantime Barak had arrived at the house of Heber, in hot pursuit of Sisera. Jael came out to meet him and greeted him with these words: "Come, and I will show thee the man whom thou seekest." She then led Barak into the tent, and there lay the cruel general, dead.

Thus Deborah's predictions came true: the highest glory of the victory belonged to a woman, not to Barak, and Deborah herself glorified the brave Jael in the immortal "Song of Deborah."

Women during their menses according to the Torah are NOT "unclean"! "Impure" and "unclean" are bad (and sexist) translations of Tuma:

There is a spiritual concept called "tuma." Unfortunately mistranslated as "dirty," tuma is not a description of inferiority, impurity or uncleanliness. Rather, tuma is caused by the "loss of human life." For example, the dead body of a human being contains the greatest degree of tuma.

Similarly, after having marital relations, men are in a state of tuma, because of the loss of the "building blocks" of life within them (Leviticus 15:16). Women incur this state of tuma when they menstruate, because of the loss of potential life within them (Leviticus 15:19). The Talmud calls this a "whisper of death."

I know that sex is prohibited when a woman has her menses, but I don't think that personal prayer is.

Regarding Deborah, I was under the impression that she was elderly, and so past her menses, with her children therefore grown up.

But that only affects worldly matters. Such 'ritual impurity' is for our own benefit, it is not for God. For example, I have heard it stated that it is good if a woman abstains from Holy Communion if she has her menses, but God will in no way turn her away if she does commune. Rules are to guide us in life, but we are fundamentally above rules if we dwell in the love of Allaah manifesting itself by love of others.

The highest inspiration is not that of a message from an angel like Gabriel, but the Vision of the Light of Allaah. The Bible is very clear, for "blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God". We of ourselves cannot see the Light of Allaah ("no one has seen God at any time"), but he can reveal Himself to us. Ritual impurity is nothing to do with this.

I know that sex is prohibited when a woman has her menses, but I don't think that personal prayer is.

it seems like the "woman in her mense, comparative look, in Jewdism, christianity and Islam" issue is needed to be discussed in separete thread

Leviticus

{15:1} And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying,............ {15:19} And if a woman have an issue, [and] her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart even days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even. {15:20} And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she itteth upon shall be unclean. {15:21} And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe [himself] in water, and be unclean until the even. {15:22} And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe [himself] in water, and be unclean until the even. {15:23} And if it [be] on [her] bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even. {15:24} And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth [shall be] unclean. {15:25} And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean. {15:26} Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her separation. {15:27} And hosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe [himself] in water, and be unclean until the even. {15:28} But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. {15:29} And on the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles, or two young pigeons, and bring them unto the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. {15:30} And the priest shall offer the one [for] a sin offering, and the other [for] a burnt offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for her before the LORD for the issue of her uncleanness. {15:31} Thus shall ye separate the children of israel from their uncleanness; that they die not in their uncleanness, when they defile my tabernacle that [is] among them. {15:32} This [is] the law of him that hath an issue, and [of him] whose seed goeth from him, and is defiled therewith; {15:33} And of her that is sick of her flowers, and of him that hath an issue, of the man, and of the woman, and of him that lieth with her that is unclean.}}

1- what version of the bible do you use, since all the versions i checked just mentioned "unclean & uncleanlness"?

in regard to your understanding of "Tuma":

2- what is the meaning of "separation & put apart", for women, in her mense??

3- why any thing she touches or lies on will be unclean?? and how to clean it again??

4- why any one touches, not here, but any thing she touched will be unclean??

5- what if the man/her son/ her baby touched the woman??

6- why the one who touches any thing that the woman touched in her mense will be unclean tell the evening even if he had a full bath??

7- what if such one who touched something that the women touched in here mense didn't know that the women already touched it? will he be unclean tell the next schedualed bath?

Jews, they were always treated very badly by Christians throughout the history. so called ,The killers of their Jesus were always considered as evil .they were made to pay heavy taxes (much higher than jizya) .they were not allowed to practice their religion and they were killed and burned .Christians successfully reduced the population of Jews to a great  extent .how can they ever forgive them .after all they are the killers of their so called god .
But suddenly in 19th century, things began to change .Christians divided into two categories .those who want to kill them and those who want to save them at any cost . Both the division were as the result of biblical quotes .the first group which wanted to kill them was on the quote
      Zechariah 13 .8
In the whole land, says the Lord,
two thirds shall be cut off and perish,
and one third shall be left alive.
The other one was working on the quote
      Zechariah 13.9
And I will put this third into the fire,
and refine them as one refines silver,
and test them as gold is tested.
They will call on my name,
      and I will answer them.
      I will say, ‘They are my people’;
and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”
The first one belongs to Hitler and his pope and the other one is Zionist.
Both the groups worked with all due perfection to make these quotes as a reality .Hitler and his pope killed two thirds of Jewish population as well as Jews were made to settle in Israel .this was the fitting theological replay for Darwinism .is that was the prophecy which happened or the prophecy which was made to happen .it is almost 80 years ,if this was a prophecy then at least they might have able to convert Jews.there is no sign of their Jesus yet !but they killed lot of innocent people in the name of Jesus.
our modern day Zionist ,john hagee ,in his words explains better

Same hagee declared ,the same god send bush to kill Muslims in Iraq and bush claimed that he was fulfilling the prophecy of the bible by eliminating Saddam .during invasion of Iraq ,bush trying to convinced the president of France ,Jacques Chirac  ,claimed  that he was on his way to stop the activities of Gog and  mogog in middle east .yet another biblical prophecy fulfilled by a Christian .by killing Saddam and the innocent people in iraq  they claim second coming of  their Jesus  and killing is the service of Christians to god .Yet no sign of Jesus
The future of this ideology is far more dangerous than what they did in the past .they are planing about wipe out about two thirds  of world population .the name which they gave it is a holy war called Armageddon .the stage is set in Syria .as per their claims Muslims are Gog and mogog

A civil war is made into a War …… very soon it will be  Armageddon .again ,Christians  wants to wipe out Iran and Russia from the globe in order to welcome their Jesus .what type of god is that  who demands innocent blood to flow like a rivers in order to appear .what type of scripture is that which teaches its followers to commit holocaust .is it not worth throwing into bin
I will not blame john hagee or bush ,it is their bible which is to be blamed .for example ,take for instance ex president of US gorge bush .he was groomed in a biblical environment .one of his ancestors, George Bush (biblical scholar),1796 – 1859 was a Zionist .he was also the author of The Life of Mohammed , the first American written biography of the religious leader.he made negative assessment and showed him as hoaxer. from this background , ex president was expected to be a Zionist as well as Muslim hater .people like john hagee might not cause much damage but people like bush made earth as blood pond .religion is very dangerous particularly biblical .
on the other hand ,quran does not mention about big war or antichrist .quran give solutions to the coexistence of all religions and they call it a hatred manual .
I don’t know how many  innocent people will they  kill in order to welcome their Jesus

Matthew 13 presents a very peculiar problem for Christianity, in verse 10-11 it says:

The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.”

From this, we learn that the masses were not able to understand Jesus when he spoke, apparently only those who were given the secrets of the kingdom of heaven would be able to understand what Jesus was saying. Who was given that knowledge? Just the twelve disciples. Therefore, according to the New Testament, Jesus went around preaching unintelligible sermons to masses of people (cf. Matthew 13:2, John 6:60), when the only people who could have possibly understood him were only the twelve because they possessed the “secret knowledge”. This however, is a compounded problem, as the secret knowledge (of the kingdom of heaven) that unlocked Jesus’ unintelligible sermons, didn’t seem to work. On more than one occasion the disciples had to stop Jesus and ask him to speak intelligibly to them:

“The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.” – Luke 18:34.

So let’s recap. Jesus speaks unintelligibly to the masses. Of the masses, 12 disciples have the “secret knowledge (of the kingdom of heaven)” which would enable them and only them to understand what Jesus was saying. Of these twelve, none of them understood what Jesus was saying according to Luke 18:34, because the meaning of what Jesus was saying was hidden from them. What this means is that Jesus did a lot of talking to a lot of people and no one was able to understand what he was saying. To explain this Monthy Python-esque scenario, I’ve developed a parable of my own:

Sam is a wealthy king. He called his entire kingdom together and said to the large crowd before him, that behind that door there was a million gold coins. He then invited the crowd to open the door. The crowd rushed to the door and tried opening it. The door was locked! Sam approached his close friends and said, “to unlock the door you need a secret key, I will give each of you a secret key so you may enter the room with a million goal coins!” What Sam did not tell them, was that they keys were fake and would not work. Sam’s friends ran to the door and each of them tried their keys, none of the keys were able to open the door. David, one of Sam’s friends returns to him and says that the keys are not unlocking the door. Sam the wealthy king is surprised, and tells them that he has given the keys for the door and it is their fault the keys are not working.

Then imagine that 2000 years later there were still people claiming to have that key, with the door still remaining forever locked. That’s exactly the scenario we are left with. What’s the use of giving them secret knowledge that’s supposed to explain what he’s been saying all along, when the knowledge is still hidden from them? You might be saying to yourself, this doesn’t sound right, there must be an explanation. Well, no less than 2 chapters later in Matthew 15:15-16 we read:

“Peter said to Him, “Explain the parable to us.” Jesus said, “Are you still lacking in understanding also?”

In this case, Jesus of all people seems to be surprised that the secret knowledge he gave them (cf. Matthew 13:10-11, Luke 8:9-10), which he then hid from them (Luke 18:34), leaves them still unable to understand what he’s saying. In other words, Jesus is surprised they still don’t understand him, even though he is the one that hid its meaning from them.

      and God knows best.

As the topic suggest " Is it innocence of Muslims or it should be Innocence of Christians "

      Lets see who are innocent

      Psalm 104:5
      King James Version (KJV)
Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.
      Ecclesiastes 1:5
      King James Version (KJV)
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

Here are few famous biblical quotes which when defended shook the foundations of church in early 16th century .the first scientific discovery which was discovered by Galileo. Galileo was awarded with life time house arrest by the church for his infamous discovery and thus church and their absurd bible was put on trial here after. Poor Galileo screamed to save the church but church was in no mood to pay heed and started do dig its own grave.

The year of Galileo dead witnessed yet another birth of legend named Sir Isaac Newton .His famous quotes were

“Worshipping Christ as God was idolatry, to him the fundamental sin' "

Furthermore he was a Nicodemite ,his papers which were published after 27 years of his dead gave a clear proof for tampering of the bible .He clearly mention in his papers that the verse about trinity was a concoctions and interpolation which were later deleted from the bible .actually this era witnessed innumerous attacks on the bible .for the sake of time and length of this article I am restricting myself to prominent people .

So as science gradually developed innocent Christians came to know about the biblical frauds.

Amidst, these confusions, their emerged a   serious question among the learned people .The question was

If bible is a fraud, what is the solution for our existence .Sea of humanity exists in front of their eye without the knowledge of its creator!
As a answer, came Darwin with his another absurd theory which marked the clear cut downfall of bible and scientific world threw bible in dust bin .Thus Bible deceived innocent Christians with regards to science who were beliving it to be a word God till then.

Abraham Lincoln, another prominent Christian of that time changed to deist .Yet another Christian who thought that bible clearly deceived Christians. He takes the reputation of being first the American president to be assassinated .He was assassinated by the church for interfering in church matters and abolishing cruel church slavery.

Once again their bible deceived innocent Christians in political  .

And thus, since bible betrayed innocent Christians in every aspect of life, like  a innocent child looking at his mother, Christians were staring at church for solutions for these problems .A man named Eugenio Pacelli  together with a powerful fanatic Christian named Adolf Hitler devised a fool proof plan in the name of concordant which successfully diverted Christians form the short comings of  bible in the world war II .The man named l Eugenio Pacelli was promoted as pope for his services to the Christianity. And thus bible was completely thrown into the gutters .The present day cristianity is nothing but “Jesus loves you” and conjurers like Ben Haden (I cannot elaborate this part due the length of this article)

Before concluding, I want to mention about few countries who are still following bible.

Firstly, Philippines, four out of ten children born in here are illegitimate!

I am not joking, this is a fact.
OR At least by this link
      http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/lifestyle/10/20/11/4-10-babies-born-ph-illegitimate-nso
Philippines, being a church ruled country use of contraceptive and divorce is banned
The result is illiteracy and unintended pregnancy
It is estimated that about 3.4 million births per annum are unintended
See how bible is deceiving the innocent christens even today
And Btw , what happened to moral ,The most minimum thing expected from a religion is moral .even in this bible failed
And they call us we are innocent , lol

One more country which was in news recently was Ireland

It is evident that the death of  savitha Halappanavar caused by the abortion laws made by the church . Can bible be held responsible for the death of innocent people. Is it not barbaric to kill the innocent people in the name of religion .can the church will ever answer this .can church will accept that bible is outdated can the laws in phllipaines and ireland  be changed to suit the modern times
Who is innocent here .Muslims or Christians

On the other hand , even today Islamic laws can be modified to suit our times
I have to end here due to the length of this article
Insha Allah .I may continue with this topic ,because i feel we have to talk lot more regarding the countries like Philippines and ireland .

      Jazak Allah

      Regards

(AINA) -- Much has been made of the recent discovery in Turkey of a Bible purported to be written in the Aramaic language, 1,500 years ago. The Muslim media, as well as Western media outlets, quickly pounced on this, claiming this Bible contains verses attributed to Jesus Christ, in which Christ predicts the coming of Muhammad. No media outlet has published a facsimile of these verses.

This "Bible" is written on leather in gold letters. The picture of the front cover show inscriptions in Aramaic and a picture of a cross.

For any native speaker of Modern Assyrian (also known as neo-Aramaic), and that would be your average Assyrian today, the inscription is easily read. The bottom inscription, which is the most clearly visible from the published photos, says the following:

      Transliteration: b-shimmit maran paish kteewa aha ktawa al idateh d-rabbaneh d-dera illaya b-ninweh b'sheeta d-alpa w-khamshamma d-maran

Translation: In the name of our Lord, this book is written on the hands of the monks of the high monastery in Nineveh, in the 1,500th year of our Lord.

Nineveh is the ancient Assyrian capital and is located in present-day north Iraq, near Mosul.

There are spelling errors that are immediately noticeable.

The first word, b'shimmit maran ("in the name of our Lord"), is erroneously spelled with a 't' instead of a 'd'. The 'd' in Assyrian is the genitive, and it prefixes the word that follows. It should read b-shimma d-maran, not b-shimmit maran (note, the last word of the sentence is correctly spelled d-maran ("of our Lord")).

The first word also contains another spelling error. The correct spelling for "name" in Assyrian is ashma, with the initial 'a' being silent. Therefore, when correctly spelled, 'in the name of our Lord" should be written as b-ashma d-maran.

The word idateh is misspelled, it should end with an 'a', idata. Also the phrase al idateh ("on the hands") is incorrect, it should read b-idata ("by the hands").

The bottom sentence uses the word ktawa ("book") to refer to the book, but in Assyrian the Bible is never referred to as a "book." One says awreta (Old Testament), khdatta (New Testament), or ktawa qaddeesha (holy book). Given this, since no one has seen the inside of this "Bible," we cannot be sure if it is in fact a Bible.

Most significantly, this writing is in Modern Assyrian, which was standardized in the 1840s. The first bible in Modern Assyrian was produced in 1848. If this book were written in 1500 A.D. it should have been written in Classical Assyrian.

It is highly unlikely for monks to make such elementary mistakes. It remains to be seen whether this book is a forgery, or even what kind of book it is.

The bottom inscription also says the book was written in 1500 A.D.. If the book does contain verses predicting the coming of Muhammad, it is no great accomplishment to predict something 870 years after the fact, since Muhammad founded Islam in 630 A.D..

Most media outlets, as well as Muslim and Christian outlets, lead the story with headlines pronouncing "1500 year old Bible predicts the coming of Muhammad" -- without any evidence to support this.

For Muslims, the implications of the headlines are desirable, that Jesus Christ is a Prophet, just like Muhammad, and not the Son of God. According to Al Bawaba, the Turkish culture and tourism minister, Ertugrul Gunay, said "In line with Islamic belief, the Gospel [this Bible] treats Jesus as a human being and not a God. It rejects the ideas of the Holy Trinity and the Crucifixion and reveals that Jesus predicted the coming of the Prophet Mohammed."

Commenting on the errors in the book, Al Bawaba says in another article:

For example, the book says that there are nine heavens and that the tenth is paradise while in Quran they are seven only and claims that Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus without any pain while the Quran story says she got labor pains.

According to the gospel, Jesus said to Jewish priests that he is not the Messiah and that the Messiah is Mohammed. This means a denial of the existence of a Messiah, who is in fact Jesus Christ, and makes Jesus and Mohammed seem like they are one and the same person.

The book also contains information that lack historical credibility like the presence of three armies, each made up of 200,000 soldiers, in Palestine whereas the entire population of Palestine 2,000 years ago did not even reach 200,000. In addition, Palestine was occupied by the Romans at the time and it is impossible that Palestine was allowed to have any army or armies of its own.

The last sentence in chapter 217 says that 100 pounds of stones were placed on Christ's body. This confirms that the gospel was written quite recently because the first to use the pound as a unit of weight was the Ottomans in their experiments with Italy and Spain and it was never known during the time of Jesus.

Chapter 20 also stated that the cities of Jerusalem and Nazareth are sea ports.

This same article ends with "According to many studies, the gospel attributed to St. Barnabas was written by a European Jew in the Middle Ages who was quite familiar with the Quran and the Gospels. He, thus, mixed facts from here and there and his intentions remain unknown."

But despite the availability of information on this "Bible," most media outlets, Muslims, liberal and secular organizations have portrayed this discovery as something that undermines Christianity, ignoring the many problems with this book and presenting it as virtual fact. In fact, in their zeal to support the anti-Christian narrative, they have withheld or suppressed information questioning the authenticity of this book. For these organizations and individuals, this is another tool in their arsenal for the attack on the foundations of Christian doctrine.

If it was written in the "1500th year of our Lord" (1500 A.D.) how can it be 1500 years old? It is sad that some will commit fraud just to defame one religion to try to win converts through such deceptive means. Muslims should condemn such forgeries because they only make Muslims look bad and they are harmful to non-Muslims who may convert under such false 'evidence' then come out of Islam or become atheists and Islamphobes.
