Islam And Music

How does Islam relate to music? All music in general, or specific music, you choose.

What kind of meaning does music have to muslims? What kind of music do they listen? What instruments are favored? Anyone know if muslims created instruments, and if they did, what are they called?

Is western musical scale forbidden in Islam and why?

I have very little knowledge of non western music and would like to learn more about it.

But there in the controversial part "Post scholars' rulings, not your own This section is for quoting the rulings and views of scholars regarding controversial issues, and whether its compulsory or voluntarily, permissible or unlawful. Post your views only if you are a scholar or quoting one." - or can this note be revised?

(Mind you, didn't stop me or others before, but it was mentioned a week or two ago.)

This is a very beautiful piece of music in the "The Carnival of the Animals", composed in late 1800s.

Note copied from PS below: After it has finished YouTube shows a selection of related clips you might like to watch. Some of these show ballerinas, which might be against the rules of this website. So stop it before it gets to the end.

Is this type of music forbidden in Islaam? I know technically we should all be so holy that all we need to do is pray, but sometimes (especially in mental health) music can be very helpful.

I know that this is not exactly an 'Islamic video', but presumably you can see that I am not wanting to go against the rules, but merely get a better understanding.

If you are a Muslim who is against music in general, did you know that such music as this existed in the West? Do you like it even though you would not allow it?

PS. I've just listen to it, and realised that after it has finished YouTube shows a selection of related clips you might like to watch. Some of these show ballerinas, which might be against the rules of this website. So stop it before it gets to the end.
