Muhammad said that he was commanded by Allah to spread Islam this way:

It was easy to become Muhammad's enemy. If you did not acknowledge him as
your ruler and prophet then you were his enemy. Those who joined Muhammad
joined the fight against those who did not accept Muhammad's religion:

This time of conquest was a great source of pride to Muhammad and his
Companions. Many poems were composed to celebrate their victories.
Here is a section of a poem that Ka'b b. Malik
composed before the Islamic conquest of Al-Ta'if.

These battles were not self-defence, they were offensive battles whose aim
was to spread the Islamic empire and the rule of Muhammad.
This was missionary warfare and violent jihad.

Throughout this period of warfare, Muhammad's teaching was still very important.
He inspired his soldiers to fight with the promise of paradise. For those
who fought there was the promise of forgiveness, status, virgins,
expensive clothes, watered gardens with abundant fruit,
rivers of wine, milk and honey, slave boys and
beautiful houses. Consider these verses from the Qur'an:

Those Muslims who did not fight for Muhammad were not equal in status to those who did:

These promises of Muhammad inspired the Muslims to give their lives
towards the spread of the Islamic empire. Consider the example of `Umayr b.
al-Humam:

Thus warfare and the preaching of paradise were important
methods that Muhammad used to spread Islam. Muhammad did not send
out preachers and evangelists instead he sent out armies.

Warfare on Muslims

Muhammad's use of warfare was not just aimed at non-Muslims. On
some occasions he called for war on Muslims. This was part of the
way he strengthened the hold of Islam on the early Muslims community.

The context of the above verses is that some Muslims wanted to get the interest
that was still owed to them before they became Muslims.
They are warned that if they seek this interest then Allah and Muhammad will make war on
them. We see a similar command in 9:73.

The context here is that Muhammad is calling the Muslims to Jihad. Some of the
Muslim tribes do not want to fight, therefore, they are called hypocrites and
Muhammad is to fight against them until they join the Jihad. Muhammad had their Masjid
burnt down.

In sura 33 Muslims are again called hypocrites and threatened with war if they continue to
question Muhammad's moral and military judgement.

In sura 49 Muhammad is commanded to fight Muslims
until they "return unto the ordinance of Allah".

In sura 66 those Muslims who questioned what Muhammad was doing
are called hypocrites and were to be treated harshly.

Muhammad commanded the true Muslims to make war on those Muslims who
did not stop using alcohol.

To conclude, Muhammad used warfare on Muslims who questioned him or
did not follow the laws he gave. They were called hypocrites. In this
way Muhammad strengthened and spread the influence on Islam on the newly
converted tribes.

Money and Gifts

Warfare was not always the best option for Muhammad. As he gained
wealth he also used money and gifts to spread Islam.

After Muhammad had conquered Mecca he ordered the alms money (zakat)
be used for certain purposes. One of these purposes was to encourage
people to embrace Islam:

Commenting on "those whose hearts are to be reconciled",
Ibn Kathir writes:

Thus sometimes Muhammad used money and gifts to spread Islam.

Assassins

Some tribes did not respond to warfare or money. Ibn Ishaq records how Muhammad
used the fear and intimidation generated from assassinations to convert a tribe:

Thus, sometimes Muhammad used the method of assassination to convert a
tribe to Islam.

Compulsion

Sometimes Muhammad did not use compulsion to spread Islam.

But on other occasions he did use and approve of compulsion.

Thus on some occasions Muhammad used and approved of compulsion to spread and keep people
in Islam.

Torture

Muhammad needed a lot of money to finance the expansion of his
religion and empire. One of the richest cities in the region was the Jewish city of
Khaybar. The Jews there did not accept Muhammad as a prophet or his claim
to rule over them. After Muhammad had conquered Khaybar we read what he
did to get their riches to finance his jihad.

Thus Muhammad sometimes used torture to finance the spread
of his religion and empire.

3. REMOVING OPTIONS

Destroying the Ka'bas and Shrines

The Ka'ba in Mecca was not the only ka'ba in Arabia. There were other ka'bas and
shrines that the Arabs would make pilgrimage to during the year. Muhammad spread
Islam by destroying these other ka'bas and making the Islamic worship at Mecca the only
option for the Arabs.

Destroying Independent Masjids

Muhammad commissioned the construction of many Masjids. However, on one
occasion an independent group built a Masjid and invited Muhammad to it.
These Muslims did not want to fight in Muhammad's Jihad. Muhammad had their
mosque destroyed.

Thus Muhammad spread his Islam by making his Masjids the only option.

Rejecting Other Prophets

At the same time that Muhammad was claiming to be a prophet
there were men from other tribes who claimed to be prophets too.
These men and their tribes accepted Muhammad as
a prophet but Muhammad did not accept these men as prophets. During this
time these tribes had two prophets: Muhammad plus their own.

During his life Muhammad as not able to kill these other
prophets but when he died his followers killed them. This will be shown in section 5.
Thus Islam spread by making Muhammad the only option for a prophet.

4. INCORPORATING THE PRE-ISLAMIC RELIGION

Muhammad spread Islam by making the transition from the pre-Islamic
religion to Islam easy. He did this by making very few changes to it.
The idols were removed and people now had to submit to him,
but nearly all of the other practices remained the same.
In practice Islam is very similar to the pre-Islamic religion.
Here are a few examples.

Fasting

Muhammad initially continued the pre-Islamic time for fasting:

As-Safa and Al-Marwa

The pre-Islamic religion also had a special walk that was done between
the mountains of Safa and Marwa in Mecca. Muhammad continued this practice too.
Again, some of the early Muslims were uncomfortable with this and thought that this
pagan practice should be stopped. Later Muhammad transformed the meaning of
these mountains to be "symbols of Allah":

The Black Stone

The pre-Islamic religion was animistic with special attention to
sacred stones.

The most sacred stone in the pre-Islamic religion was the
Black Stone.
It was part of the Ka'ba in Mecca. Even though the worship of stones is
animistic Muhammad continued this practice. Some of the early reformer Muslims
found this very uncomfortable.

But for the majority of the early Muslims being able to continue their previous practice
of venerating the Black Stone made it easy for them to accept Islam and so Islam spread.

Incantations

Incantations were part of the animistic pre-Islamic religion. Muhammad
allowed this practice to continue as long as the incantations were
transformed to be Islamic:

Thus Muhammad spread Islam by making an easy transition from the pre-Islamic
religion to Islam. He did this by retaining most of the animistic pre-Islamic
practices.

Animistic Blessings

Many hadiths record that Muhammad and his
followers believed that substances from his body had special powers to
bless people. This is a pre-Islamic animistic belief. The early Muslims venerated
Muhammad's saliva, ablution water, sweat, hair and possibly even his urine
(1,
2).

... (I)f he (Muhammad) spat, the spittle would fall in the hand

of one of them (i.e. the Prophet's companions) who would rub it on

his face and skin ... (Bukhari: vol. 3, bk. 50, no. 891, Khan)

Narrated Mahmud bin Ar-Rabi': I remember Allah's Apostle and also the mouthful of water

which he took from a bucket in our house and ejected (spat on me). ...

(Bukhari: vol. 1, bk. 12, no. 801, Khan)

Narrated Abu Juhaifa: I saw Allah's Apostle in a red leather

tent and I saw Bilal taking the remaining water with which the

Prophet had performed ablution. I saw the people taking the

utilized water impatiently and whoever got some of it rubbed

it on his body and those who could not get any took the moisture

from the others' hands. ... (Bukhari: vol. 1, bk. 8, no. 373, Khan)

Narrated Abu Hazim: ... A man among his companions, seeing him (Muhammad)

wearing it (a sheet), said, "O Allah's Apostle! Please give it to me to wear."

The Prophet said, "Yes." (and gave him that sheet). ... That man said, "I just

wanted to have its blessings as the Prophet had put it on, so I hoped

that I might be shrouded in it." (Bukhari: vol. 8, bk. 73, no. 62, Khan)

Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him)

came to the house of Umm Sulaim and slept in her bed while she was

away from her house. ...

She came and found him sweating and his sweat falling on the leather

cloth spread on her bed. She opened her scent-bag and began to fill

the bottles with it. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him)

was startled and woke up and said: Umm Sulaim, what are you doing?

She said: Allah's Messenger, we seek blessings for our children

through it. Thereupon he said: You have done something right.

(Muslim: bk. 30, no. 5762, Siddique)

Abu Bakr reported: (Muhammad called for) the barber and, pointing

towards the right side of his head, said: (Start from) here, and

then distributed his hair among those who were near him. (Muslims: bk. 7,

no. 2992, Siddique)

Muhammad continued the practice of venerating the marabout (holy man) with
himself being the object of veneration.
This practice is often mistakenly said to be "folk Islam" and not genuine Islam, however,
Muhammad clearly accepted his veneration. This was part of the way
Muhammad spread Islam.

Venerated in Prayer

Though Muhammad is dead he is venerated and addressed in the Islamic prayer (salaat).

As Salaamu 'alaika ayyuhan nabiyyu wa rahmatul laahi wa barakaatuh

Greetings to you, O Prophet, and the mercy and blessings of Allah.

(Salaat)

Venerating saints/marabouts was a pre-Islamic practice that Muhammad continued
with himself. This made Islam easy for his followers and helped to spread it.

5. AFTER MUHAMMAD'S DEATH

(Immediately after the death of Muhammad) The situation that Abu Bakr

faced on assuming the caliphate was very grim. Many tribes apostatised from

Islam and refused to pay Zakat. Many false prophets rose throughout the

length and breadth of Arabia, and many people offered allegiance to them.

The argument that weighed with them was that a living prophet was to be

preferred to one who was dead. (Prof. Masud ul-Hasan,
The History of

Islam
, vol. 1, p. 97)

The following is a summary of Prof. Hasan's account of the wars against
these apostate Arab tribes.

The Arab tribes around Medina were prepared to stay Muslim but they did
not want to pay the Zakat (tax) to the Islamic authorities. These tribes tried
to attack Medina but were repelled. Abu Bakr chased and conquered them
and took their land.

Abu Bakr then turned his attention to the rest of the Arabian
Peninsula, much of which had now chosen to leave Islam.

To the north of Medina was the tribe of Asad. They followed their
prophet Taleaha. The Muslim forces marched against them and
defeated them at Buzakha. They then returned to Islam.

Next the Muslim forces marched to the tribe of Fazara and
fought at Zafar. The Muslims won and the defeated tribe offered
submission and was readmitted to Islam.

The tribe of Sulaim were attacked by the Muslim forces and
defeated. Their leader Abu Shajra was captured and taken to Medina
were he accepted Islam.

The Muslims force marched against the tribe of Tamim. This tribe
offered no resistance nor did they offer submission. Their leader was
killed and his wife married by the Islamic general, Khalid. The
tribe then accepted Islam.

The tribe of Hanifa was led by the prophet Musaylima. The Muslims
fought hard against this tribe and finally won though they suffered a
great number of casualties. Once Musaylima was killed and
the tribe subdued they accepted Islam.

After this battle Abu Bakr sent an army to Bahrain. In Bahrain a
new king had come to power and he rejected Islam. There was much
internal fighting. The Muslims tried to conquer them but were not
successful until reinforcements arrived. Having been defeated, the
people of Bahrain repented and were admitted to the fold of Islam.

In Oman, Laquit ibn Malik was the prophet. A Muslim force was sent
against him. Laquit and ten thousand of his followers were killed.
Then the people of Oman reconverted to Islam.

In Mahrah there was civil war with the death of Muhammad.
The Muslims sided with the weaker party and fought with them.
When this region was conquered the people of Mahrah
repented, and were reconverted to Islam.

In Yemen there was a prophet called Aswad Ansi. He had a large
following. The Muslim forces marched against them, defeated them and
killed Aswad. Once defeated, this region returned to Islam.

At Hadramaut the people resisted Islamic rule. The Muslim forces
conquered them and they were readmitted to the fold of Islam.

The apostasy campaigns began in August 632 C.E. and these operations

were over by February 633 C.E. Within the short space of six months,

Abu Bakr succeeded in exterminating apostasy and winning back all

the tribes in Arabia to the fold of Islam. (Prof. Masud ul-Hasan,

The History of Islam
, vol. 1, p. 102)

Thus when Muhammad died the Islamic empire fragmented and many of
the Arab tribes left Islam. They did this for various
reasons. Some didn't want to pay tax to Mecca/Medinah, others wanted
to follow their own prophet for they did not see Muhammad as the final
prophet. Muhammad's companions compelled these
tribes to return to Islam. This is how Islam spread and established itself
in Arabia.

CONCLUSION

How did Muhammad spread Islam? As this survey demonstrates he
used many methods. These included teaching Islam, reciting the Qur'an,
warfare, money and gifts as bribery, loot from robbing caravans, assassinations, compulsion, torture, removing
other religious options and incorporating much of the pre-Islamic religion
into Islam. After Muhammad's death his companions continued some of these methods.
It is wrong to exaggerate any one of these methods; Muhammad used all of them
to spread Islam.

To this day all of these are used.

I stopped reading when I reached those wars were not in self defense and their purpose to spread Islam,,

you clearly take information from silly sources , that interpret history the way it fits them ,

Muhammad PPBUH and his companions did not attack any one just to spread Islam

they do it either direct self defense , or end a tyrannical government harming and killing Muslims, or with someone who had a treaty with Muslims , then ended up breaking the treaty and killing Muslims

Mr. gilito ,,

I swear what are you doing now is filling your head with poisons fictional stories,

If you want to know Muhammad , let a Muslim teach you , or read in authentic Muslim books, then you will know the True Muhammad PPBUH , The Muhammad that we know, admire , take as a role model ,

give me a situation , and ill tell you all what I know about it , and then go compare it with your sources to realize the hatred and lies they spread ,, and what are they not telling you.

Muhammad PPBUH was a fair, just man with high morals, Before and after his message , non of the non-believers accused him of been barbaric, terrorist, or mass murdered or war lord.

though they accused him of being a sorcerer, poet, mad man, satanic ,, while all those things are easy to answer to as well ..

but war lord and what is in it context , is nothing they could have accused him of ,, because they knew what is going on

Allah Almighty gave Muhammad PPBUH  a revelation of truth , and a lot of people wanted to stand on it ways , so there had and still are many fights against Islam , that why the Quran teach us on these situations among others, because it is a realistic book talking about what are we facing , and going to face , and how to deal with it with a way that The Lord Almighty made lawful.

Wow. What a waste of space that post by gilito is. Assassinating people to keep their tribe in Islam? Really? If you are going to say something at least make sure its the truth. Why don't you tell us WHY the Jewsih tribes of khaybar and others were taken over? Why does your article skip over the fact that they were traitors. After signing treaties with the Messenger of Allah(saw) they betrayed and colluded with the enemies. Why skip that part?

Islamic government did spread by force. The Armies of Islam destroyed the two superpowers of the time and within a short amount of time had liberated Spain and reached China. This is a fact and something Muslims are proud of. However, we never force people to become Muslim. That is not allowed. The government would take over and set up the law of God but people were welcome to join Islam or peacefully live under the protection of the Islamic State if they choose to follow other religions.

Well Muslims battle achievements are beyond what you mentioned SaracenSoldier,,,

we won against Arabian major tribes, and  Persians Romans,   Mongols ,Crusaders ,Byzantine , USSR ,

and every small tyrannical nation in between . ..

and note that all the places were those battles took place, became Islamic afterwards, Persia Jerusalem, Constantinople (Istanbul ) , south Russia are all Islamic, even the Mongols before their defeat became Muslims,,

All thanks to Allah , whose light will overwhelm any darkness.

but those successes were on the hands of righteous Muslims, dedicated to Allah S.W.T. and his Messenger PPBUH.

now Zionists are planning to guide the world into a world war against Islam . that can be the prophesy that one day the whole world will be Islamic, and they came to it.

Well, I have to say that I think it's all rather terrible that Muslims are proud of their violent history. Christians, it would appear, in the main, have now rejected their equally violent past in the year 2013. Especially, obviously perhaps, that Jesus was essentially a man of peace.

World domination still seems to be a major part of the agenda of many Muslims. This is seemingly because (their) concept of Allah

is one of righteousness  which needs to be violently imposed upon those who are considered to be 'infidels' or unbelievers - or those who are considered to be corrupt In some way.

Therefore, from this I must assume that, from the opinions expressed that 'most Muslims' will still agree that, the 'Way of the Sword', is the right one?

I myself, do not agree with this.

No , we are not proud of violence , rather proud of successes,

the war is something happening , there is always people who want to fight the light,

So if I tell you I am proud that Afghani militias are killing the USA occupiers , there are two ways you can look at it.

media way , or truth way .

the truth is they occupied a peaceful nation for nothing but a hidden agenda they were planning for a long time,

the truth I am happy with every NATO soldier who dies in Afghanistan because of their tyranny,

we are proud of our success across history to demolish darkness , all thanks to Allah, no nation had fell down and resin back up as many as the Muslim nation ,

World domination is not an agenda or goal , it is a fact , and the world is leading them self's to it when they choose to agree with Zionists and attack the Lords words on earth,  but in no way it is a hidden agendas (like the western many ones ) .

and nothing in Islam about violently impose Islam, the west is coming to Islam by attacking Islam, and the west is the one who VIOLENTLY want to impose democracy in places where people do not want it,,,,

Brother Wahidian, as a Muslim you should never be ashamed of the successes of our past. Many non muslims and those who are trying to fight against Islam use this tactic of trying to make us feel ashamed and question our religion but if you believe that Allah is the Judge then you should trust in him that what he has said is right and that those people do not have the same understanding of what justice is that Allah has.

[at]gilto I think you should spend time reading more authentic sources from Islam instead of wasting your time copying and pasting things from anti-islamic websites.

- paradise will be a place of pleasure, its a shame you see that as a bad thing. People who criticise Islam for the way it represents paradise in my opinion don't want a very happy ending. Who wouldn't want to live in a place where all your pleasures are fulfilled especially when you spent your life serving Allah, of course He will reward you.

-Muhammad pbuh did not live a life of luxury, I challenge you to bring forth some evidence of his life of luxury since you claimed that he gained wealth through warfare. I already know in advance that you can't and that I can provide evidence to show that he didn't live a life of luxury, that he was the most charitable man.

-also you say that he changed some things from the pre-islamic religion. This isn't a very good criticism since obviously there were some practices that were already ordered by Allah years before Muhammad pbuh that people had kept. We believe there were many other prophets in Islam such as prophet Ibrahim. They were all Muslims, some people kept to the message the old prophets but they had incorporated some things outside of the religion. Muhammad pbuh came to correct the people, he was the final messenger, he completed the religion. You obviously have a misunderstanding of what Islam is if you think Muhammad pbuh was the first Muslim. Prophet Adam pbuh was the first Muslim. Allah has been guiding us since the creation of mankind not since the birth of Muhammad.

can't even begin to address some of your other comments which have no basis in Islam. I pray that your very lost soul finds its way to Allah sooner rather than later.

Although history is not my strong point, it seems I am becoming disillusioned by the warlike and expansionist tendencies of Muhammad (pbuh).

It seems that what you call : 'The successes of our past' are nothing less than a series of attacks upon a number of countries

for nothing other than ideological reasons. Just as Christians have fought numerous wars in the name of religion, I think that from the perspective of the 21st century we should, if at all possible, condemn all forms of violence and not applaud it.

Salaam,

Wahid

Well, maybe the Qur’an can explain all this…

The context of the following verses are: Mohammed had just
conquered Mecca. With an army. Not with gentle persuasion.

He then ordered that no more pagans should be allowed to
make a pilgrimage to Mecca. Some of followers were uneasy: they thought they
would lose the income the pilgrimage machine normally generates. (An unfounded
fear, as it turned out…)

But, as so often, instantly Allah gets ready to help
Mohammed out of this fix:

So we read:

9:28

O ye who believe! Truly the Pagans are unclean; so let them
not, after this year of theirs, approach the Sacred Masjid. And if ye fear
poverty, soon will Allah enrich you, if He wills, out of His bounty, for Allah
is All-knowing, All-wise.

Notice what Allah is saying? Unbelievers are DIRTY. For this
reason Allah agrees (as always) with Mohammed, and they should not be allowed
to come the Kaaba. But then Allah addresses instantly the anxiety of the Muslims.
“If you fear poverty, Allah will enrich you” Ahhh…. So there is going to be an
ALTERNATIVE source of income. Well, what might that be? If we read on, Allah
tells us:

9:29

Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor
hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor
acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the
Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves
subdued.

This is a very interesting verse. Muslims are told in the
last major surah of the Quran to FIGHT the unbelievers. It abrogates any
previous instructions.It does NOT  say
fight the unbelievers who fight Muslims, the text is very clear: Fight those
who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath
been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of
Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book. Fight those who reject
Mohammed and Islam, including the people of the book, in plain English. So
fight them because of what they honestly believe. Fight them not because they
attack you, it does not say that. Fight them because they do not believe in
Islam. That is what it says.

Why? Well, that is also explained clearly: The point of the
fighting is: until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves
subdued.

So here Allah tells the Muslims to fight all non-Muslims,
including the people of the book, IN ORDER to collect protection money. Don
Leone, weep, you have been divinely outclassed. Allah is not only the greatest
of deceivers, but it seems he runs a protection racket too. Muslims are
commanded by Allah to fight non-Muslims until they pay them. Well, you will not
get any cash out of me….

And just in case anyone has any doubt at all why to fight
the people of the book, Allah spells it out, right in the next verse:

9:30

The Jews call 'Uzair a son of Allah, and the Christians call
Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; (in this) they but
imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. Allah's curse be on them: how
they are deluded away from the Truth!

In fact both the assertions about the Jews and the
Christians are wrong, but that is another topic. Allah CURSES the people of the
book for their (apparent) beliefs, and he says they are not really different
from the “unbelievers of old”.  So it is
entirely false to say that Islam only allows defensive wars. The Qur’an orders,
loud and clear, aggressive, offensive warfare against ALL non Muslims, in order
to collect money.

In a way I prefer the Osama bin Laden type Muslim. He is at
least honest about that. The so called “moderate” Muslim is merely trying to
use deception to achieve the same aim.

This little passage also proves to any reasonable person
that Allah is not any kind of divine being at all, but merely Mohammed’s glove-puppet.
That is why I find it highly offensive when Muslims tell me that Allah is the
God of the Jews and the Christians.  To
suggest that God would order or condone violent extortion is blasphemy.

You've already been asked to research yourself and stop running to anti Islamic webpages to get your distorted version of Islam- as that is what you are portraying above.

According to the Qur’an, killing any person without a just cause is as big a sin as killing the whole humanity and saving the life of one person is as good deed as saving the whole humanity. (See al-Ma’idah
5:32). So Allah won't contradict Himself and hence what you put up above is just reading part of verses. These type of anti Muslim approaches have been done to death and are easily refuted.

The answer is simple and that is you should read these verses in their textual and historical context. You should read the whole verse and it is better that you read few verses before and few after- not just run to cherry pick.

It is important that we study the religious texts in their proper context. When these texts are not read in their proper textual and historical contexts they are manipulated and distorted.

I can quote dozens of verses from the Bible which seem very violent, if taken out from their historical context. These Biblical texts have been used by many violent Jewish and Christian groups.

Crusaders used them against Muslims and Jews. Nazis used them against Jews. Recently Serbian Christians used them against Bosnian Muslims. And some Muslims also use the Quran to also try and give themselves a reason for terrorism and transgression- but the Quran never supports this (as I have shown above).

Let me mention just a few verses from the Old Testament and New Testament and tell me what do you say about them:

“When the LORD your God brings you
into the land where you are entering to possess it, and clears away many
nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites
and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites,
seven nations greater and stronger than you. And when the LORD your God
delivers them before you and you defeat them, then you shall utterly
destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no favor to
them. (Deutronomy 7:1-2)

“When you approach a city to fight
against it, you shall offer it terms of peace. If it agrees to make
peace with you and opens to you, then all the people who are found in it
shall become your forced labor and shall serve you. However, if it does
not make peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall
besiege it. When the LORD your God gives it into your hand, you shall
strike all the men in it with the edge of the sword. Only the women and
the children and the animals and all that is in the city, all its spoil,
you shall take as booty for yourself; and you shall use the spoil of
your enemies which the LORD your God has given you… Only in the cities
of these peoples that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance,
you shall not leave alive anything that breathes (Deutronomy 20:10-17)

Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. But
all the girls who have not known man intimately, sparefor yourselves.
(Numbers 31:17-18)

Even in the New Testament we read the following statement attributed to Jesus saying to his disciples:

“I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not
have, even what he does have shall be taken away. But these enemies of
mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay
them in my presence. (Luke 19:26-27)

And your last sentence was..

To suggest that God would order or condone violent extortion is blasphemy.

You are telling ME to research myself? That is what I do. How about you? For a start, I take most things that Muslims tell me about Islam

with a very big pinch of salt, as their religion allows and encourages them to deceive me. To you I am "the worst of people", basically worthless, "fuel for hellfire".

According to the Qur’an, killing any person without a just cause is as big a sin as killing the whole humanity and saving the life of one
person is as good deed as saving the whole humanity. (See al-Ma’idah 5:32). So Allah won't contradict Himself and hence what you put up above is just reading
part of verses. These type of anti Muslim approaches have been done to death and are easily refuted.

Well, let’s have a look at the verse you mention…

On that account: We ordained for the Children of israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in
the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although
there came to them Our messengers with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land.

It is a corrupted/modified version copied from the Jewish Talmud.
First note who is addressed here: the “Children of israel”, not Muslims. Then note who the verse explicitly exempts (unlike the original Talmudic version):
the ones “doing “mischief”. Those are ALL unbelievers.Rejection of Islam is "mischief". I can show you many Islamic clerics loudly and openly saying that there is nothing wrong in killing unbelievers.

The answer is simple and that is you should read these verses in their textual and historical context. You should read the whole verse
and it is better that you read few verses before and few after- not just run to cherry pick.

Well, this is the standard lame excuse I have heard many times from Muslims. I also notice no Muslim ever actually supplies the “context” I am
supposed to have missed.

I gave the historical context of the surah. I discussed three whole consecutive verses. The rest of it has much the same message. It is one long call to violent jihad. Do you want me to discuss the rest as well? So, why don't you add anything I missed? As you don't, I must conclude I must be generally right.

And then, you rightly claim that Allah does not contradict himself. He merely replaces older verses with new ones, so contradictions are instantly resolved. (Why he can’t get it right in the first place, is maybe something you want to think about…) Now, as I said, surah 9 is the LAST major one, so it abrogates anything that has a conflicting message if it was revealed earlier, which is almost all of the rest of the Qur’an.

Finally, the tu quoque argument, is a logical fallacy. Here is why:

“you are accused of murdering your wife”, the judge says. “do have anything to say before sentence is passed?”  “Hitler murdered millions, and you are going on about one little wife?” Is that a good argument? Will it reduce the sentence?

The Old Testament quotes are the views of the ancient authors, writing for a specific occasion long ago, and certainly offer no guidelines to Christians today. (Ok, there are always nutters…)

And your quote from Luke is part of a STORY Jesus tells. A character in the story speaks those words, not Jesus.

In case it needs to be a little clearer, here we go:

Quran (9:111) - "Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and the Quran: and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme."

Quran (48:29) - "Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard (ruthless) against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves"

Ibn Ishaq: 327 - “Allah said, ‘A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land.
Muhammad, you craved the desires of this world, its goods and the ransom captives would bring. But Allah desires killing them to manifest the
religion.’”

Tabari 9:69 "Killing Unbelievers is a small matter to us" The words of Muhammad, prophet of Islam.

Ibn Ishaq: 992 - "Fight everyone in the way of Allah and kill those who disbelieve in Allah."

We have a big liar on this thread trying to twist the words of Allah. How dare you gilto come to this forum and paste anti Islamic things when you clearly show a lack of understanding for what Islam is and you also don't even want to learn about Islam. People who do not want to learn are the worst people. Islam is a religion as a whole not a few verses of the quran. When you learn to take Islam as a whole maybe people will take you seriously here. You behave like Islam orders us to kill people for no reason, with no limits. This clearly shows your lack of understanding of anything.

Why don't you reply to my previous comments. You criticised prophet Muhammad pbuh saying he gained wealth through conquests - why don't you support your words with some evidence? Are you afraid that when you research such claims that you cannot find the evidence?

And yes you will go to hell if you don't accept Islam - we are not lying to you that is obvious from the quran. But that does not mean we cannot try to show you the message of Islam. Many Christians come to this forum to learn about Islam and we always try to help them but it is difficult to help people like you who close their hearts and do not want to listen to the truth.

And one thing you should be clear about is that we never need to defend the word of Allah, we can spread the word of Allah, we can help people understand it etc but we never need to defend Him, Our Creator. He is greater than you or I. So if you think by coming here you will make us think our religion is wrong, you won't.

There is a difference between the spread of the Islamic state, and the spread of Islam.

No one was forced to become a Muslim, simply because such way would be invalid. For anyone to become Muslim, before reciting the shahada (declaration of faith), he/she must first believe in heart in what is to be recited.

That is why I find it highly offensive when Muslims tell me that Allah is the

God of the Jews and the Christians.  To

suggest that God would order or condone violent extortion is blasphemy.

When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.

And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:

But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:

Deutronomy Chapter 20

But it's the Old Testament, right?

The Qur'an does not order to kill the entire male population if they fight nor to exterminate an entire population. With that being said, the Torah had harsher laws.

I am referring to the original Torah revealed to Moses, peace be upon him. The Qur'an abrogates the Torah. However, it's quite clear what the present day Torah says, and the Jews, well, Orthodox Jews, still believe in its laws, including the ones I quoted.

OK. And what about Muslims, what are they expected to do in the present day then? That's what I meant.

From the very beginning, historians and writers of Seerah have differed on the date of birth of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم. There are disagreements even for the ‘year’ of birth of Prophet Muhammadصلى الله عليه وسلم so, naturally we have different views regarding his ‘month’ of birth and ‘date’ of birth. Considering the fact that a wide majority of the historians have mentioned the ‘month’ to be Rabi ul awwal, one can safely assume that the month was Rabi ul awwal. Furthermore, it is proven from Authentic Narrations that his ‘day’ of birth was ‘Monday’.
Abu Qatada Ansari رضى الله عنه reported that Allah's Messenger صلى االه عليه وسلمwas asked about fasting on Monday, whereupon he said: It is (the day) when I was born and revelation was sent down to me.
(Sahih Al Bukhari – Kitab As Sawm)
The different views regarding the date of birth are:
2nd Rabi ul Awwal: Ibn Abd al-Barr
5th Rabi ul Awwal: Ameer ud din
8th Rabi ul Awwal: Ibn al Qayyim, ibn e Hazm, Az Zuhri , Ibn e Dihya
9th Rabi ul Awwal : Muhammad Suleman Mansurpuri, Mubarakpuri , Shibli Nomani, Mahmud Pasha Falaki, Akbar Shah Najeeb Abadi, Moeen ud din Ahmed Nadvi, Abul Kalam Azad
12th Rabi ul Awwal: Tabari, ibn e Khuldoon , Dr hameedullah , ibn e hisham, ‘Allama Abu’l-Hasan ‘Ali ibn Muhammad al- Mawardi, ibn e ishaaq
10th Rabi ul Awwal: Abul Fida, Abu Jaafar al Baaqir, Al Waqadi , Al Sha’bi– 10
17th Rabi ul Awwal: Shia view; and they also believe that it was Friday
22nd Rabi ul Awwal: Also attributed to ibn e Hazm
      10th Muharram: Abdul Qadir Jilani
Now, how can one find the true date out of the numerous opinions? The only sure-shot information that we have is that it was the Monday and the month Rabi ul Awwal. Few biographers of the Seerah have mentioned that a person named Mahmud Pasha Falki proved through astronomical calculations that the Monday falls on 9th Rabi ul Awwal in the year when Rasulullah was born. People who have written biographies in the past century have accepted his research and they normally quote the date of birth to be 9th Rabi ul Awwal. Furthermore, Allama Qastalani writes that the people of Zaych are in agreement that the eighth of Rabi ul Awwal was the Monday.
The presence of such disagreements on the exact day of his birth proves that birthdays were not important to the Arabs. Arabs were very well known for their great memorization skills. They used know the lineage of their families and other Arabs by heart; they used to know hundreds of verses of poetry by heart, a great feat of memorization. Documentation wasn’t very common. Hence, it is very difficult to conclude when exactly Rasulullah was born.

Why we cannot find the Exact Date Even from Astronomical Calculations
The pagan Arabs would play with the calendar and amend it according to their wishes; which is referred to as Nasi. The pagan Arabs practiced Nasi in two ways.
1- Whenever it suited them, they would declare a prohibited month to be an ordinary month in which fighting, robbery and murder in retaliation were lawful for them. Then they would declare an ordinary month to be a prohibited month instead of this month in order to make up for the deficiency caused in the number of the prohibited months. Earlier writers of Seerah like Ibn e Hisham and commentators like Mujahid quoted that one year the Arab made Muharram as Halal, and they would consider Safar to be sacred (Haram), and the next year they’ll take Muharram to be sacred. They did so because three sacred months Dhul-Hijj, Dhul-Q’ada and Muharram were consecutive. `Abd al-Raĥmān ibn Zayd ibn Aslam, another leading commentator says that they would make two Safar one year and two Muharram next year.
2- The other way of Nasi was the addition of a month in order to harmonize the lunar year to the solar year so that the Hajj of Prophet Muhammad should always fall in the same season and they should be saved from the botheration and inconveniences that are experienced by its observance according to the lunar year. Due to the lunar calendar, the months shifted 11 days earlier each successive year, thus the people wished to perform the hajj (pilgrimage) ceremony - which coincided with different seasons - not on certain days of Dhu al-Hijjah, but on other days and months when the weather was mild and trade environment was suitable.  In order to ensure this, they used the nasi (adjustment) method. So, the way out was to add a month after every three years. In this way Haj was observed for 36 years on dates other than the actual dates. Then in the thirty seventh year it was again observed on the 9th and 10th of Zil-Hajjah, as they should have actually fallen according to the lunar calendar. It so happened that on the occasion when the Holy Prophet performed Hujjatul-Wida' (Farewell Haj). These dates by rotation coincided with the actual dates of Haj according to the lunar calendar
Abu Bakra reported that (in the Farewell Address) Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: Time has completed a cycle and come to the state of the day when Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is constituted of twelve months, of which four are sacred; three of them consecutive, viz. Dhu'l-Qa'da, Dhu'l- Hijja and Muharram, and also Rajab the month of Mudar which comes between Jumada and Sha'ban.
      (Sahih Muslim - Al-Kitab Al-Qasama wa'l-Muharaba wa'l-Qisas wa'l-Diyat)
Qur’an also mentions this act of delaying months in Surah At Tawbah.
Nasi (Postponing of the sacred month) is only an addition in unbelief, wherewith those who disbelieve are led astray, violating it one year and keeping it sacred another, that they may agree in the number (of months) that Allah has made sacred, and thus violate what Allah has made sacred; the evil of their doings is made fair-seeming to them; and Allah does not guide the unbelieving people.
      (Surah At Tawbah 9:37)
Moreover, before the annunciation of prophet-hood, there was not any official calendar in force in the Arab land. The Arabs were accustomed to changing and altering the months as they pleased, and hence, sometimes they would make thirteen and fourteen months in one year. It is mentioned in Diya’ al-Qur’an that in a lunar year one extra intercalary month would be added to the existing twelve months. It is quite clear that before the annunciation of prophethood, such additions were made, however, we can never know in which specific year or years additions were made. (Diya’ al-Ummat, Justice Shaykh Muhammad Karam Shah al- Azhari (ra), Diya’ al-Qur’an, volume 1, page 202, note 60.)

      Conclusion
Considering the above mentioned facts, we can never be sure about the date of birth of Prophet Muhammad. The exact birthdate of the Prophet Muhammad has always been the subject of dispute amongst classical scholars. Nothing authentic has been reported in the standard source books of tradition, and this fact in itself shows that it was not held in the significance that later authorities did. The astronomical researches are invalid considering the practice of Nasi. The only way we could have been absolutely sure about it was if Prophet Muhammad would have told us that himself, which he actually didn’t. If we consider this fact we would be forced to leave all bid’aat (innovations) attached with 12th of Rabi ul Awwal.

      Why 12th Rabiulawwal is famous?
1- The two famous books authors of Seerah Ibn e Hisham and Ibn e Ishaaq both have mentioned it to be 12thRabi ul Awwal.
2- Perhaps those who decided to start milad took this day:  This also explains why Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, writing before the conception of the mawlid in the fifth century of the hijrah, stated that the most common opinion amongst historians was in fact the 8th of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, and yet Ibn Kathīr, writing three centuries later, after the mawlid had been introduced as a public festival, stated that the 12th of Rabīʿ al-Awwal was the most common opinion. Earlier historians like Ibn e S’ad didn’t even put 12 Rabi ul Awwal in the list of candidates for Birthday of Prophet Muhammad. In the earlier days 8th Rabi ul Awwal used to be accepted as the date of Birth.

      Date of Death
What we know for sure is that day of his death was ‘Monday’, as for the date we have different narrations. The famous one is 12th rabiulawwal.
Narrated Hisham's father: Aisha said, "I went to Abu Bakr (during his fatal illness) and he asked me, 'In how many garments was the Prophet shrouded?' She replied, 'In three Sahuliya pieces of white cloth of cotton, and there was neither a shirt nor a turban among them.' Abu Bakr further asked her, 'On which day did the Prophet die?' She replied, 'He died on Monday.' He asked, 'What is today?' She replied, 'Today is Monday.' He added, 'I hope I shall die sometime between this morning and tonight.' Then he looked at a garment that he was wearing during his illness and it had some stains of saffron. Then he said, 'Wash this garment of mine and add two more garments and shroud me in them.' I said, 'This is worn out.' He said, 'A living person has more right to wear new clothes than a dead one; the shroud is only for the body's pus.' He did not die till it was the night of Tuesday and was buried before the morning."
      (Bukhari – Kitab al Janaiz)
13th Rabi ul Awwal: Muhammad Suleman Mansurpure
      12th Rabi ul Awwal: Mubarakpuri
2nd Rabi ul Awwal: Ibn e Hajr
1st Rabi ul Awwal: Ibn e Jareer
28th Safar: Sh’ia Historians (They also mention the day to be Monday)
From the books of Hadith we can be sure that the year Prophet Muhammad died:
9th Dhil Hijjah was Friday (Bukhari – Prophetic Commentary on the Qur’an)
“….It was Friday and the Prophet was standing at 'Arafat (i.e. the Day of Hajj)"
      (Narrated by Umar bin Al-Khattab)
      We have four possibilities:
1- If Dhil Hijjah, Muharram and Safar all were of 30 days, Rabi ul Awwal starts on Wednesday and Mondays fall on 6th, 13th and so on.
2- If Dhil Hijjah, Muharram and Safar all were of 29 days, Rabi ul Awwal starts on Sunday and Mondays fall on 2nd, 9th, 16th and so on.
3- If any two months were of 29 days and one of 30 days, Rabi ul Awwal starts on Monday and Mondays fall on 1st, 8th, 15th and so on.
4- If any two months were of 30 days and one of 29 days, Rabi ul Awwal starts on Monday and Mondays fall on 7th, 14th and so on.
      As for 28th Safar:
1- If Dhil Hijjah and Muharram are 30 days it is Sunday.
2- If Dhil HIjjah and Muharram are 29 days it is Friday
3- If one is 29 and the other is 30 it is Saturday.

The story of Treaty of Hudaibiyah talks about the story of Muslim's first plan to do Pilgrimage . How they got upset when they were not able to do so and so Allah revealed the verses that it was indeed a manifest Victory of  Islam .Everything happens because of Allah's will.We shouldn't get very upset on things that has not happened according to our Will. For Muslims the treaty of Hudaybiyah was a failure and they were very sad and depressed but then it proved to be a golden victory and because of it more and more people accepted Islam.

You can read the story here  . It is particularily inspirational in modern times when People are getting upset with the western world. It is all in Allah's plan.
