Introduction

... Tonight we will talk about another difficult stage; the Balance.

God (SWT) says:

1. The (Day) of Noise and Clamour:

2. What is the (Day) of Noise and Clamour?

3. And what will explain to thee what the (Day) of Noise and Clamour is?

4. (It is) a Day whereon men will be like moths scattered about,

5. And the mountains will be like carded wool.

6. Then, he whose balance (of good deeds) will be (found) heavy,

7. Will be in a life of good pleasure and satisfaction.

8. But he whose balance (of good deeds) will be (found) light,-

9. Will have his home in a (bottomless) Pit.

10. And what will explain to thee what this is?

11. (It is) a Fire Blazing fiercely! [Qur'an 101: Al-Qari'ah]

In the world there is occasionally a non-existent balance between good deeds and the achievements one may acquire. Good people may be harmed without having gained justice to their misfortunes. However, on the Day of Judgement everything will be balanced.

The Balance

The Balance of good and bad deeds comes prior to the stage of the bridge between Hell and Paradise. I wonder how our balance will be after twenty five days of Ramadan. I wonder if you are happy with your balance, or if you wish you made more of an effort to make up for last year’s lack of good deeds. Lady Aisha remembered the Day of Judgement while the Prophet (PBUH) was asleep. She started to cry until the Prophet felt her tears on his face and woke up. He asked her what was wrong. She said she had remembered the Day of Judgement and wondered if we would remember our families and friends. The Prophet said that we would, except in three stages: on the bridge, when we are handed our books, and at the balance. The Prophet (PBUH) said that everyone will be looking to see what their balance (of good deeds) will be like.

Let us imagine the following scene. At this point you are waiting for your book, wondering if you will take it from your right or left hand. Imagine the fear that you will feel if the book is handed to your left hand. Imagine the happiness you will feel if it is handed to your right hand. You'll start calling to people:“Ah here! Read ye my Record! I did really understand that my Account would (one day) reach me! [Qur'an 69:19-20]

God (SWT) says: And he will be in a life of Bliss, In a Garden on high, The Fruits whereof (will hang in bunches) low and near. "Eat ye and drink ye, with full satisfaction; because of the (good) that ye sent before you, in the days that are gone!" And he that will be given his Record in his left hand, will say: "Ah! Would that my Record had not been given to me! "And that I had never realised how my account (stood)! [Qur'an 69:21-26]

Imagine that your deeds are being placed onto the scales. God says:“We shall set up scales of justice for the Day of Judgment, so that not a soul will be dealt with unjustly in the least, and if there be (no more than) the Weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it (to account): and enough are We to take account [Qur'an 21:47]

Is there one scale or many? Various scholars have stated that there will be many scales for different types of deeds.

Imagine that the disbelievers will be terrified to receive their book to the extent that they will try to hide their hands behind their back! Some will even try to cut off their hands so that they cannot receive their book! However they will receive it, no matter how hard they try to avoid this situation.

Now imagine that this stage is complete and the next stage, crossing the bridge, is now due. The Balance will be there, it will be as wide as the heavens and the earth! It will have to balance everything; every smile, every word and every act. Imagine that as you wait for your book of deeds, the deeds will all appear in front of you as if you are in front of a cinema screen.

God says: “And the Book (of Deeds) will be placed (before you); and thou wilt see the sinful in great terror because of what is (recorded) therein; They will say, "Ah! woe to us! what a Book is this! It leaves out nothing small or great, but takes account thereof!" They will find all that They did, placed before them: And not one will thy Lord treat with injustice. [Qur'an 18:49]

It won't be something that is written down for you to read. It will be something that you are going to watch and experience all over again. You will watch yourself commit a sin and feel every single sensation you went through at the time. Everyone else will be watching this screen with you. Imagine! Your mother, father, the Prophet, the Angels; they will all witness your sins on this screen.

Your good deeds will also be displayed. The day you guided your friends to God; the day you wore your scarf; the day you gave charity or visited the orphans. Indeed you will feel happy when you watch this part of your life.

After this you will have to place, with your own hands, your deeds on each side of the scale (the good and bad side). “They will find all that They did, placed before them: And not one will thy Lord treat with injustice. [Qur'an 18:49] How brilliant and terrifying is this picture?

On top this; we will be carrying our bad deeds on our backs. God says:“For they bear their burdens on their backs and evil indeed are the burdens that they bear [Qur'an: 6:31].

Furthermore, God says: They will bear their own burdens, and (other) burdens along with their own, and on the Day of Judgment they will be called to account for their falsehoods. [Qur'an 29:13]

Be careful that you never encourage people to commit sins, since you will carry them on Judgement Day! Can you imagine what state you will be in?

Let us review the person who does not give charity. The Prophet (PBUH) said that on Judgment Day, the man who does not give charity will have a snake approach his neck. The snake will say that he is his money and his treasure, and wrap itself around his neck. Dear youth, approach your father and remind him to pay his charity. You must pay the 2.5% of charity lest you be the ones with the snake around your neck.

Imagine standing at the balance, your heart shivering with fright, and then your fasting deeds come to erase your sins in front of God. Fasting will materialize too! So will the Qur'an, which will also erase your sins. They will both land on your good deeds scale. Imagine, that you are only one bad deed away from not entering Hell! Or imagine the opposite! That one more good deed could have saved you from Hell! Imagine that on Judgement Day, someone will begg everyone for one more good deed so that he can enter Heaven. However, everyone will be too worried about their own balance to give anyone a free good deed! This person will go to his own mother and will be mortified when she declines his plea! This is since she will be too worried about her own position! Can you imagine how difficult this situation will be?

"The (Day) of Noise and Clamour; what is the (Day) of Noise and Clamour? (It is) a Day whereon men will be like moths scattered about, and the mountains will be like carded wool. Then, he whose balance of (good deeds) will be (found) heavy [Qur'an 101: 1, 4-6]

Why is this chapter called, in Arabic, Al Qariah? The word Qariah is a harsh sound, like a strong beat. This is because the hearts will beat rapidly with fear. We are used to our hearts beating hard when were scared. However, it will never sound the way it will on Judgement Day.

God (SWT) says: “The Day whereon they will (all) come forth: Not a single thing concerning them is hidden from God. Whose will be the Dominion that Day? That of God, the One, the Irresistible! That day will every soul be requited for what it earned; no injustice will there be that Day, for God is swift in taking account [Qur'an 40:16-17] Moreover, "Ah! Woe is me! Would that I had never taken such a one for a friend!! [Qur'an 25:28]

On Judgement Day people will be divided into two groups. One group will contain people with bright faces, due to their happiness. The other group will have darkened faces, due to their sins.

Acts that increase your good deeds

Let us discuss the happier things which will occur on Judgment Day. One of the things that increase the good deeds is charity. Whoever gives money as charity, even if it a tiny piece of food, will have their good deeds from this act continuously increase until Judgment Day! It will become as heavy as the Mountain of Uhud! So let's give money as charity! There are many other good deeds we can do with the intention of it being a charity!

However, we must be very careful in the following point. All your Good deeds can be placed onto your balance as high as a mountain; but it can all turn to dust. This is for the people who obey God in public, and commit sins when they are alone. So please do not waste your good deeds by disobeying God.

A further point which can make your balance heavier is your intentions. Imagine that a woman had the intention to bring up her future child as a pious Muslim for the sake of God. However, she was unable to get married or have children. Nevertheless, since she devoted her intention for the sake of God, there will be a pious child weighing down her Balance of good deeds!

Harming others & Forgiveness

Next, people who you have hurt stand up and take what you owe them. Your good deeds will be taken away from you for the injustice you caused. Imagine! The most valuable good deeds you have will be taken away from you for an injustice you caused to someone! Not only do your good deeds get taken away, but you will have sins, which you did not commit, placed on your balance from other people! Be careful that you don't harm anyone, since your good deeds will not last.

Nevertheless, there is hope. The Prophet (PBUH) said that everyone will come together on Judgement Day with the person he harmed. The victim will ask God to give him what is due from the other party. God will ask the other person to give him what he owes, but he will say “O God, my good deeds have run out. God will tell the victim that his brother's good deeds have run out. As a result, the victim will ask God to take his sins and add it onto the other person's balance. However, God will tell the victim to look up and witness a magnificent castle. The victim will ask God who it belongs to. God will reply that it is for whoever has the price. The victim will ask God who this is. God will reply that it is him, if he forgives his brother. Instantly he will reply “I forgive him! I forgive him! Then God will tell him to take his brother's hand and go into Heaven together.

Debts

In addition, we must be careful of our debts. The Prophet (PBUH) said that whoever dies with the debt of even a pound will have it taken from his good deeds on Judgment Day. Imagine the person who owes a million pounds! Try and imagine your balance now. Can you see it? Remember that good deeds are heavy on the scale.

Seven important points

Let us review the things which make your balance heavier.

1. Sadakah, giving money to charity. Can also be any other acts such as giving clothes to the poor, etc.

2. Da'wa, calling people to God.

3. Two words which are light on the tongue, heavy on the scale, and loved by God: sub-haan Allah wa biham-di-hi, sub-han Allah Al 'atheem. Send messages to all your friends and tell them!

4. Saying Alhamdulilah (All praise be to God). Say it often for it increases your good deeds.

5. Having good manners. The Prophet (PBUH) said that there is nothing heavier in a person's Balance than their good manners.

6 - Laylat el Qadr (The Night of Decree). It is better than a thousand months, so increase your worship on this night in order to increase your good deeds.

7 - Saying "La illaha illa Allah (There is no God but Allah). Say it with your heart for the Prophet (PBUH) said it renews your faith.

Do these seven things and God willing your balance will be heavier. Remember to always correct your intentions so that your deeds are done for God's sake alone.
